Gonfalon Cubs: Looking Forward

It’s about time I posted a new thread, even if I can’t think of a lot of new things to say at the moment.  I’ve always been a glass half full guy when it comes to the current day Cubs, so it’s pretty easy to look at the first half and see plenty of reasons to hope for improvement - the SP can’t be this bad, Rizzo and Bryant will definitely be better, plus the Maddon Cubs always seem to be more of a second half team.  The areas most likely to regress may include the overall bullpen ...

Sox Therapy: Halfwayish Home

So with the Sox at the “halfway” point of the season (98/162=50%?) let’s catch up a bit.

MVP - Mookie Betts - I mean this isn’t really a tough one. JD Martinez has been great and Xander Bogaerts and Andrew Benintendi are having great years also but Mookie has been something special. He may not be the best player in baseball but is he the best five tool player? (What kind of arm does Trout have? I don’t have a sense of that). It’s worth taking a moment to sit back and just ...

Sox Therapy: Bigfoot, and Unicorns, and the Red Sox Bullpen

Reports are that “Tyler Thornburg” is joining the Red Sox bullpen today. This is the closest we’ve been to actual confirmation that “Tyler Thornburg” actually exists.

Entertaining the hypothetical, let’s consider what the implications would be for the pitching staff, were this to happen.

Gonfalon Cubs: Regrouping

I wanted to put up a new post yesterday, but I was sick - and not just from watching the Cubs (hey-o).  I think we talked quite a bit last year about how inconsistent the Cubs were, but this year seems even more extreme.  I don’t remember the worst series last year, but it would be hard to top losing 4 in a row to the Reds.  The Cubs had the lead in 3 of the games, but Sunday really was a masterpiece in blown games.  Montgomery pitched pretty good yet again - and then the wheels completely fell ...

Sox Therapy: A Pleasant Trip So Far

The Sox have had a nice little road trip so far notching a 5-2 record and washing the taste of the disappointing homestand out of their collective mouths.  What I think is encouraging is how they have gotten here.  Returning star Mookie Betts has not yet hit his stride hitting just .200/.286/.320 and Ace Chris Sale only started one of the seven games.  I think there are a few things of note both up and down that probably deserve some recognition;

- If this is “all” Eduardo Rodriguez is I think ...

Sox Therapy: Where Are We?

After a disappointing and somewhat punchless 3-3 homestand the Sox hit the road for a bit of a rugged road trip through Baltimore (3), Seattle (4) and Minnesota (3).  3-3 isn’t an awful homestand or anything but it’s a bit disappointing given the fairly mediocre opposition.  The bad news was the potent offense has really scuffled the last four games scoring just 8 runs while dropping 3 out of 4.  That disappointment is somewhat mitigated by the elephant in the room that is the bizarrely long ...

Gonfalon Cubs: Clicking

Although it was another poor weekend for the offense, it’s hard not to like how a lot of things are starting to look like they’re coming together for the Cubs right now.  This year’s team looks more like the 2016 version than the 2017 version, although there’s still plenty of reason to be concerned about the rotation.  We’re starting to see games where it’s one phase of the team that really shines - be it the defense or baserunning - in ways we really didn’t see last year.  So all in all, it’s ...
