Hall of Merit: Most Meritorious Player: 1901 Discussion
Most Meritorious Player: 1901 Discussion
Going back to the first season of the American League because next year is the pre-integration committee vote.
No World Series yet so no postseason consideration. I could use help locating Negro Leaguers to consider. 1901 was really sketchy for Negro League statistics and even consistent barnstorming teams. The Cuban X Giants and Chicago Union Giants were active. I believe Frank Grant, Charlie Grant, Grant Johnson and Rube Foster are from this era....Read More...

Jim's Lab Notes: Recent Updates and Turning off Advertisements
As you may have noticed, I’ve been working on the server and making some software updates. The downtime was required so I can move forward with some of the things on my off-season to-do list. I hope the outages didn’t inconvenience you too much.
First up on my to-do list was setting things up so I could turn off advertising for those of you who generously donated to support the site in 2014. Although automating the process is still on my list, I have turned off advertising on accounts that ...Read More...

Welcome to the 2015 Hall of Merit Ballot thread. Balloting is open from now (December 1) through
I’ve posted this the last several of years, but as a reminder:
“This has been an issue in the past, so I’ll repeat it now for clarification . . . the posting of the ballot to the discussion thread for new voters is not just a formality. Hall of Merit: Most Meritorious Player: 2014 Ballot
Here are the specific rules for this election:
Candidate Eligibility: Any North American professional baseball player is eligible for the Most Meritorious Player (MMP) award including players on independent teams. Voters should consider the player’s on-field contribution to Major League Baseball (MLB) team(s) in that season only. If part of the season was spent outside MLB, that value may be considered as well. However, the player’s on-field contribution should be judged in relation to the ...Read More...

Primate Studies: Loser Scores 2014
Bill James came up with Loser Scores after the 2010 season, in an effort to measure how the Pirates’ string of losing seasons compared to other lengthy stretches of bad baseball. I’ve updated the totals every year since then.
You compute Loser Scores in this fashion:
1. A team that has a losing season adds to its Loser Score the total of games under .500, plus the number of consecutive seasons that the team has been under .500.
