Sox Therapy: Feet of Clay

It is hard to argue that Clay Buchholz has earned any right to make his next scheduled start.  At this point with Eduardo Rodriguez nearing readiness and Roenis Elias lighting it up in Pawtucket if Buchholz starts Tuesday it will be both a surprise and a mistake.  Watching Buchholz get pounded last night I found myself thinking about the upcoming draft, prospect watching and what Buchholz represents on that front.

Buchholz is a former high draft pick (supplemental first, compensation for ...

Gonfalon Cubs: Regression and Perspective

I tend to think that sometimes “regression” is used too broadly when talking about a really good or really bad team.  I know that it has a very specific meaning in statistics and projections, but part of my mind always goes to the non-statistical definition: “a return to a former or less developed state.”  That’s probably a poor way of saying that we really shouldn’t be surprised that the Cubs have started looking downright mortal.  For the season, the Cubs are down to 5.5 runs/g (6.2 in April, ...

Sox Therapy: More About Guys Who Are Not Major Leaguers

So the minor league season is moving along smartly and that requires some less than smart analysis.  I am just the man for the job!  Let’s take a look at the kiddie korps! (yes I know I spelled it wrong, shut up!);

1B - Sam Travis - AAA - .281/.338/.438 - Travis impressed in Fort Myers and the 22 year old is adapting well at Pawtucket.  The K/BB rate is taking a bit of a hit which is somewhat predictable but his K rate is league average and he looks to be growing into the power the Sox hoped ...

Gonfalon Cubs: Roster Construction

I tend to be quite forgiving of most moves that Maddon or the Cubs make these days.  I mean, in some sense they’ve earned that benefit of the doubt, and it’s nice feeling comfortable that there appears to be an underlying reason for everything they do even if it doesn’t appear obvious or isn’t fully explained publicly.  However, the Cubs appear to be doing a less-than-perfect job of maximizing their 25 man roster.

The most obvious culprit is currently rostering 3 catchers.  I partially ...

Sox Therapy: The Quiet Star

It’s probably not accurate to say that Xander Bogaerts is flying under the radar but…well he seems to be flying a bit below radar detection levels.  When talk turns to this team people gush (rightly) about David Ortiz and Mookie Betts and the contributions from guys like Travis Shaw and Brock Holt seem to get the lion’s share of the attention.  The one time uber-prospect is blossoming into a star in front of our eyes.

He had a rough rookie year that I have always believed was caused by being ...

Gonfalon Cubs: This and That

Some assorted thoughts about the last week, in no particular order.

Addison Russell

Wow, does he look good right now.  His season line is up to .263/.375/.447, and his K% is down from over 28% last year to just under 20%.  His walk rate has jumped from 8% to 14%.  He’s really been driving the ball lately, and driving it to RF.  He actually had a bad April (.214/.341/.343) but has really been on fire in May (.341/.431/.614).  During his spring training power surge, I predicted 20HRs for him ...

Sox Therapy: How Do You Change the Lineup?

With Jackie Bradley channeling Babe Ruth the Red Sox lineup the question of how long (if at all) JBJ should be batting ninth.  Obviously Jackie isn’t THIS good (who is?) but he is answering the question of whether the bat will play pretty conclusively.  The rest of the lineup is generally going pretty well.  Let’s start with the question of what will these guys do the rest of the year.  There are any number of ways but for simplicity sake I’m going with FanGraphs wOBA calculation (based on ...
