2007 NL OPD (Offense Plus Defense)

What follows is a list of “total player run contribution” for the entire 2007 NL.  For defense, it has Defensive Runs Saved at each position a player played, and his total.  For offense, it has his Plate Appearances, his Outs Made, and his Extrapolated Runs Above Average at his primary position, park adjusted.  These are not adjusted to “162 games”, but for the player’s actual playing time.

Thanks for these OPD numbers, Chris. This is exactly what I was asking for in a recent thread.

I would also like to take this time to point out that the 11th most valuable position player in the NL last year still does not have a job.

This also reminds me of another stat I would like to see: umpire ERA. Small sample sizes are certainly a concern, but it would be nice to see multi-year umpire ERA numbers to see the extent of the effect individual umpires have on pitchers.

We all know that individual umps have reputations for having different strike zones, but I would like to see how much of an effect they have.

Assuming I am reading the chart right, how is Beltran so much better than Rowand on offense (33.0 vs 20.4)? His OPS+ advantage was pretty small (126 vs 123), and Rowand had more playing time. Their Palmer linear weights are very close (22.3 for Beltran vs 21.3 for Rowand). Their VORPs are basically the same (52.0 for Rowand, 51.1 for Beltran). Yeah, none of those are perfect, but the fact that they all independently have Rowand and Beltran pretty much tied on offense makes me curious how they could differ so much here.

While I'm here posting by myself, I would also like to see 2008 OPD numbers, because man, the non-Bonds Giants sucked last year.

Re: #5

Good question. Beltran only has a .005 edge in OBP, and it doesn't seem as if his 10-1 SB-CS would make that much of a difference compared to Rowand's 6-3 SB-CS.

Are those the right numbers, Chris? Do you have a different park effect than others use?

And how is Wright 20 runs ahead of Pujols in position adjusted offense? BPro has Wright about 5-8 runs ahead, depending on the metric.

Oops. I had Beltran's 2008 OBP - his 2007 OBP was .021 lower than Rowand's. Also, his SB-CS was 11-1.

I'm not sure how Wright's supposed to be seven runs better than Chipper on offense, either.

Yeah, there's definitely something funky going on with those XRAA. Carlos Lee, for instance, stands out as one of the "big names" at the bottom of the chart, but he's given 3.8 offensive runs over position. BB-Ref's Batting Runs, however, put him at 24.3 runs above average. The difference between the average LF and the average hitter is not 20 runs a year.

His dreamyness factor pushes him over the top.

I think Lee wins the award for most wrong value in this table. His defensive rating is pretty silly as well. Unless he played the year with no legs, he couldn't have been that bad. Must be a park issue there.

Although Beltran, Wright and Reyes all do seem too high, the real head scratcher is Damion Easley. Look at the guys he's right next to ... Ryan Howard, Lance Berkman, Brian McCann, Alfonso Soriano.

Easley's offensive numbers do look a little too high (he should probably be around +4), but what really boosts him there is that he's credited with 5.3 defensive runs above average at 2B in only 335 innings. That would put him at about +20 over the course of a full season, and, best as I can tell, gives him the fourth-best defensive rate of any MLB 2B, behind only Utley, Ellis and Carroll. Which seems unlikely, but I dunno.

I went over these again, and if ther eis a calc error ( and ther estill could be), I cannot find it. I also put another run estimator - Tech RC in the spreadsheet and calculated the differences. THere were some players off by as much as 15 runs, but it was speedsters (Juan Pierre, Rickie Weeks), and usually higher in my work. Carlos Lee has 110 XR, in 477 Outs. All NL LFs generated 0.2218 runs per out. They averaged 108 RC over a season of outs (487 per team, sum of all LF outs divided by 16).

The HOU PF is 100. So Lee generates 3.8 XR+ accounting for the slight difference in outs. The entire NL generates 0.19394 x-runs per out. In Carlos' outs (477), the average NL hitter would generate 92.5 x-runs. So, compared to NL average, Carlos is +17.1.

Carlos hit into 27 GiDPs, so anything not accounting for that would increase this.

As the MGL thread indicated earlier, low IP on defense can make for some really high rates (and thus DRS in those innings). You can't really extrapolate those to a season. HOWEVER, it does mean that on average, he made 5 more plays than the average 2B.

To sum up, I'm pretty sure these XRAA+ are correct. I do use some vlookups and so I understand the concern.

DPs would explain a lot of the other questions as well - Rowand had more than Beltran, and Pujols hit into 27.

Must be a park issue there.
There may be some park factor there. Lee has always been bad though.

Why should anyone assume there are different factors in the calculations when you can blame fanboyism or incompetence?

(THat's a joke, kids)

Comparing players only to their own league might explain a lot of the apparent strangeness, though I'm not sure that's the best method given interleague play.

Carlos Lee (126 OPS+) hit a whole lot better than Shannon Stewart (101 OPS+) last year, and they're both LFers, but Lee comes out just 2 runs better with the bat than Stewart in this metric. That's because NL LFers had a 120 OPS+ last year, while AL LFers had a 100 OPS+.

My personal philosophy in this is that when it comes to "competing", the NL teams only compete with the other NL teams wrt making the playoffs.
   36. Blackadder Posted: June 23, 2008 at 03:00 AM (#2829456)
I can't speak for anyone else, but I did not mean to suggest incompetence; I was merely curious how the results differed so much from other methods. I guess the suggestions thus far are DPs and stolen bases, which doesn't seem like it can quite close a 13 run gap, but I guess it may be enough to get it within a reasonable "margin of error" for this sort of thing.
   37. Danny Posted: June 23, 2008 at 03:03 AM (#2829460)
I definitely understand that, and I'm not quite sure which way is better. It's true that teams only compete with other teams in their league for playoff spots. But the playoff determinants are wins and losses, and wins and losses are settled against the teams you actually play.

For example, the Shannon Stewart was giving the A's a slight edge compared to other LFers when they played the AL, but he was a liability in their 18 games against the NL. That's especially true since the NL teams the A's faced (SF for 6 games, CIN, HOU, NYM, STL) all had better production from LF than Stewart provided.

I guess it would be ideal to weight it by individual schedules, but that's probably not worth the effort.

I agree, with both parts of this sentence with my personal capabilities. VORP does this, and I think it is the best offensive metric. I would change one thing about it - "average" is a known value. Replacement level is not. Define average (so cross era comparisons are easier), and use that baseline. After all, RL is going to be set some distance from that.

I was joking. I know it's easy to have a calc issue - and I publish this way so others can critique and question. I'm not perfect, and that's why I take that observation that something looks off, and I re-construct the calculations (I did) and I also calculated every player using Tech RC to see where there were issues. So, there's nothing wrong with your questions - they are teh QC of this type of work - you are *supposed* to suggest incompetence - that's usually the correct source for that type of difference.

The JJ Hardy defensive number puzzles me just a tad. I am also VERY surprised that Estrada isn't double digits. He was dreadful in 2007. I have no issue with the other Brewers.

That and Mark DeRosa grading out so well at second. Always liked him as a player. But by this he should just PLAY second base and quit being pushed around the diamond.

The best way to fix this, IMO, is to average both league's position against average.

Using the LF example, I had AL LF linear weights rate at about 97.5% of the average AL hitter while the NL LF were at about 108%. Combine them (adjusting for PA obviously) and it comes out about 103%.

Then I compare the AL LF to the average AL line X 1.03 and a park factor and do the same for the NL LF.

To go back to the players you listed, I had Lee at +10 over the average LF on offense and Stewart at -5.

Chris, are you using just raw DP in your numbers or are you adjusting for opportunities as well?

Anyway, here are all the NL players I have at a combined +/-10 or greater. The numbers go batting runs above position, fielding runs, then combined.

It was late in an extra inning game that lasted forever, in which players from both sides (I forget who the other side was) kept dropping like flies. Renteria hurt his ankle, Harris went from left to third, Jones went from third to short, and I guess Diaz went in to play left.

The Astros. The Braves blew a four run lead thanks to a grand slam from Mike Lamb. Ty Wigginton hit a shot at Renteria that pushed him back on his heels and twisted his ankle, knocking him out of the lineup for several weeks. Teixeira hit a homer early in the game, and Diaz hit another off Brad Lidge in the bottom of one of the extra innings to tie it up and keep the game going. Atlanta eventually lost, because that's what they did last year.
