I’m much more into the mechanical issues of hitting and the swing as opposed to analyzing statistical changes, but it is obvious something is going on with Giles this year

He’s been one of my favorite players since he first came up to Atlanta so I have video of him going back over the last few years.  I did some searching and comparing and came up with this:

http://blog.swingtraining.net/2006/07/12/come-back-marcus-giles.aspx

Of course this is one swing from last year and one from this year, but I the change definately raised an eyebrow

Would like to hear thoughts/comments/observations from others

Nice side by side thing.  I’ve always liked that sort of thing going all the way back to looking at what did and didn’t work in my swing in HS.

Its pretty obvious Marcus has been overswinging but its nice to the the components of an overswing

I wish I could have a video breakdown of my swing.

Just finished Part 2

http://blog.swingtraining.net/2006/07/14/marcus-giles-swing-analysis--part-2.aspx

I don’t really think Giles is overswing, but surely understand that is an easy conclusion to come to.

He’s always “overswung” - that is just how he does it

When you’re putting up solid #’s, it’s a “good agressive swing”

When you’re sturggling, it’s an “overswing”

Looks cool when you hit it and bad when you don’t

Also looks more like an overswing when you are 5’8”

MG2, I have no idea who you are, but this seems worthy of a real post. I’ll see what I can do.

there is a little more about me and how I got into all of this hitting/swing analysis and training stuff on my website

I’ve always been a Giles fan, but now I live in the Atlanta area and hear a lot more about Giles on the radio, newspaper, etc.

I have tons of video on just about any big leaguer you can name and was lucky to find these clips of Giles that allowed the comparisons

My blog/site is not intended to make money or draw attention to myself, but most of all share what I am doing.  I have a real interest in how the body works to generate bat speed and quickness, and how that ability applies to the skills required in hitting.

The purpose of the analysis was really to try to find something in Giles swing, and it surprised me to find that much.  In that sense, I would like to somehow get Giles to see in hopes that he can get some things turned around.  I’d love to see him get back to his ‘03 version - that was fun to watch!

I did assist Terry Pendleton at one of his hitting camps in the Atlanta area a couple of winters ago, but I have no real way to contact him, and he probably wouldn’t remember me anyways.

We’ll see I guess - maybe I’ll email it to Mark Fein and it will show up on TBS Xtra....

_______

thanks for the link!  just saw it...looking forward to seeing what kind of response it gets

I have no doubt. I just thought that attention should be drawn toward it. You’re welcome.

The only drawback is that it’s late on friday, so not as many of the junkies will see it until monday.

I just posted that comment about the purpose of my site since I am really posting for the first time.

I don’t want it to seem like I am just posting to put my site name out there.  It is pretty clear that the site is basic - the focus HAS to be content because there certainly aren’t any bells or whistles.  I’ve learned some stuff from a lot of smart people, and this is an interesting way for me to share some stuff with others.

A summer or two ago I did make a couple of posts.  My cousin (whose name I’ll leave out for now - I can’t be a double name dropper! [site & cousin]!) actually turned me on to BTF a while ago.  I’ll throw out a hint though - he has posted some info. and comments evaluating this year’s draft

Anyways, I’m sure one of us will make a comment in there to bump it up again if it doesn’t see much action over the weekend.... But wouldn’t a real junkie be reading obscure articles on BTF at 8:40 on a Friday night???? I really would like to see what kind of comments/response it gets.  I’m always open to positive/negative criticism in an effort to improve the work!

I’m a stat-head, but swing analysis works for me.

I just checked out your site, and I like it a lot. Do you offer this video for download or viewing over the internet? If so, I’d be very interested.

Giles swing was only different because of injury. It forced him to open up quicker and yank the ball. He was also trying to pull the ball more anyway. That was a goal of his. Give him a year and he will not only have the opp. way power, but the left field power too. The power was still there. He’ll be fine next year.
