AL Central Champinon Chicago White Sox at AL Wild Card Boston Red Sox - 4:19 PM EDT ESPN2

Chicago leads 2-0

CHW: Garcia (0-0, 0.00)
BOS: Wakefield (0-0, 0.00)

Garcia is a stud on the road - 10-3 3.40 ERA this season - but he’s gotten just one win in his last nine starts.

Wakefield’s knuckler has been problematic come October - 5-4 with a 6.07 ERA in 15 appearances (eight starts).

To make matters worse for Boston - their top two hitters are not quite so top against Garcia. Big Papi is an anemic .176/.263/.294 in his career and Manny is .263/.391/.632, impressive but off of his career norms.

It gets better for fans of the Southsiders: the White Sox best bashers tend to batter the knuckleballer: Jurassic Carl, Aaron Rowand and A.J. Pierzynski all are better than .300 for their career versus Wake.

Rain is in the forecast, so this all could be moot.

Manny's OPS is only 1.023 against Garcia? Whatever will we do?!?!?!?

I wish I could hop on the 95th Street/Dan Ryan L at Jackson and go to this game.
   4. The Jerry Royster Experience Posted: October 07, 2005 at 11:10 AM (#1668545)
Okay, today I see the snark.

If they get this game in, I think the Red Sox win today.
   5. The Jerry Royster Experience Posted: October 07, 2005 at 11:13 AM (#1668552)
By the way, the Weather Channel seems to think today will be relatively clear in Boston.

They will have trouble getting in game 4, however - it's supposed to storm from Saturday until Wednesday.
   6. Joe C isn't Posted: October 07, 2005 at 11:46 AM (#1668642)
If they ever play these two games, I feel confident the Red Sox will win them both.

There will be a game 5, and that's anyone's guess.
   7. Joe C isn't Posted: October 07, 2005 at 11:49 AM (#1668648)
Ugh, you weren't kidding, JRE...

Weather.com's forecast for tomorrow for Fenway's zip:

Rain...perhaps a rumble of thunder in the afternoon. High 72F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 90%. Rainfall possibly over one inch.

They'll play today...but game 4 could be monday?!
   8. Joe C isn't Posted: October 07, 2005 at 11:50 AM (#1668656)
AT least SG is creatively snarky.

You're just a jerk, McNally. :-)
   9. Kris Posted: October 07, 2005 at 12:31 PM (#1668748)
This is a random question, but I thought someone here might be able to help. There is apparently a picture out there of Babe Ruth in his Boston uniform holding a trombone. Does anyone know if that picture is in any books, or available for puchase somewhere? I'll look through my baseball books tonight, but I don't recall seeing this pic before. The only reason I'm interested is I have a trombone playing Red Sox fan friend, and figured this would be a nice snarky gift to give her after her talking trash about the White Sox before the playoffs began.
   10. VG Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:09 PM (#1668842)
It'll be interesting to see whether First-inning Freddy shows up, given the eight-day layoff between starts for García.
   11. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:18 PM (#1668865)
I've got tickets!

Look for a big game from Kevin Millar.
   12. Pastor Toastman (PH) Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:27 PM (#1668885)
If the White Sox win -- and that is an improbable scenario -- would that mean this is the last game Rooney and Farmer would call, and it switches over to a national broadcast thereafter? Or would Roomer™ tackle the ALCS if we get there?

Just don't want to miss the last one.
   13. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:29 PM (#1668891)
The local radio guys will be broadcasting all the way through the postseason.
   14. Joe C isn't Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:30 PM (#1668893)
Kris,

I'm all for snarky gifts, but that whole Babe Ruth thing? Let's just say it no longer carries the same weight.
   15. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:34 PM (#1668905)
Also, I wanted to address an issue near and dear to my heart. It is the use of the "TM" symbol.

White Sox fans, throw off your oppressors! Develop your own modes of address and formats of joke! You are copying over, in full, a Yankee chatter joke and imbueing it with almost nothing new and White Soxian. It pains me to see you blinded to the thrall in which you've put yourselves to SG and SJ and, worst of all!, McNally.

I like y'all. You're cool dudes. I say this with love and respect, that perhaps as an outsider I might offer some insight.
   16. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:36 PM (#1668911)
Kris -

1) I might wait until the White Sox actually, you know, win, to start assuming they've won.

2) Babe Ruth jokes are dead. Gone. He's just a reminder of the awesome and world-historical choke the Yankees pulled last year. I smile at the notion.
   17. Pastor Toastman (PH) Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:36 PM (#1668912)
Thanks for the info. We White Sox fans aren't used to the postseason, if you haven't been able to tell.

Roomer© all the way.
   18. Joe C isn't Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:39 PM (#1668918)
That's the spirit, PH! Good show.

Yankee chatterers' nicknames tend to be indecipherable to outsiders - they basically speak in code. We're much more open.
   20. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:44 PM (#1668941)
It is not nicknames per se of which I speak and in which regard I exhort you. Rather, it is the use of the "TM" symbol to, well, I don't know what it is to do. In any event, it is a Yankee chatter invention and symbolic mode of address. And to my best ability I have drawn a genealogy of its use, and I concluded that it was adopted uncritically White Sox chatterers as mere copyists.
   21. VG Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:45 PM (#1668942)
You probably can blame me for the use of ™ in White Sox Chatters. I am not oppressed by anyone, least of all Yankee Chatterers whom I like and respect.

Your exhortations to "throw off (our) oppressors" is just a veiled attempt to take the place of the supposed oppressors.

I'm sticking with the ™. It hasn't hurt us all season. ;)

It's not a code, it's a digital Shibboleth to tell the true believers from the infidels.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think it's the mere copying that bothers you, but that it was copied from Yankee Chatters. If the practice had been initiated by another team's fans, we're not having this conversation.

I think it's quite interesting.

In the end, this is the more important thing.

Oh, of course. I hope its clear by my diction that I'm having fun, here.

I'm concerned about a growing Yankee chatter sphere of influence.

They've faced setbacks recently, having placed many of their best men on the front lines of the steroid conflict, but they seem to have begun a new colonialist endeavor which, yes, I am explicitly countering.
   26. VG Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:01 PM (#1669004)
Oh, of course. I hope its clear by my diction that I'm having fun, here.

Of course. I just don't think it's that funny. Not because it's offensive, but I'm tired of the never-ending Yankees-Red Sox dick-measuring contest.

(How do you feel about hyphens?)

I made the mistake of going to Red Sox Nation and let me say, the Red Sox posters around here are civil and cool to be around. kevin seems like grandma with the milk and cookies out to welcome next to those guys.

In terms of White Sox fans' creativity, I actually take some pride in the fact that Keefe is probably the most consistently thoughtful, humorous caricature under any fan tent. Maybe that's just a coincidence, but it still makes me happy and thankful that he's around.

I'm still hopeful that we won't have to worry about the potential rainout tomorrow. I'm not predicting a Pale Ho victory today, but I think we have a very solid shot--basically a toss-up game.

I contrast that with Scoop Jackson, who jumped on the White Sox bandwagon this season...

Truer words not spoken, Lujack.

We do have some obscure nicknames for Red Sox we've used from time to time.

Unless most people who know instinctively who the Cookie Monster, Abe Lincoln, KFF, Bartleby, and Pantload are.

(In order, Ortiz, Clement, Millar, Bellhorn, and Wells.)

I wish this game was on in prime time.

Well, the later in the evening this game goes, the greater chance it gets rained out.

Since I still hold out a slim hope of the White Sox winning today and making the rest of the weekend moot, I want them to get today's game in.
   40. Answer Guy Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:58 PM (#1669179)
Well....it's either a win here or its the offseason. Hopefully, that knuckler dances and prances its way past the Chicago bats.

Have to keep telling myself...8-1 in elimination games....8-1 in elimination games.

Just wait until game 5, if there's a game 5.

I wasn't even happy in '03 when the Sox camer back against Oakland. After game 5, I was literally just relieved to see the series end.
   45. The Jerry Royster Experience Posted: October 07, 2005 at 03:09 PM (#1669202)
Wakefield made two starts against the White Sox this season.

First game (7/22 @ Chicago) (L) -

5 2/3 IP, 7 ER, 9 H, 1 BB, 2 K.

Homers by Rowand, Pierzynski, and Uribe.

Second game (8/13 @ Boston)(W) -

6 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 2 K.

Homers by Konerko and Rowand. I remember Iguchi looked bad against Wakefield.

The Red Sox didn't see Freddy Garcia during the Regular Season.
   46. nickm Posted: October 07, 2005 at 03:09 PM (#1669203)
I am concerned about game 5, and I was since game 1 loss. Of cause, you need to get there first, and I do not think that games 3 and 4 are slam dunk for the Red Sox, but I can easily see them winning both with a little bit of luck.

Game 5, on the other hand, ... I just do not see it happening.
   47. The Jerry Royster Experience Posted: October 07, 2005 at 03:19 PM (#1669218)
Garcia is a stud on the road - 10-3 3.40 ERA this season - but he’s gotten just one win in his last nine starts.

By the way, this is wrong. Garcia won his last two starts, and was 3-3 in his last nine starts.
   48. Bull Pain Posted: October 07, 2005 at 03:24 PM (#1669226)
Before Freddy's final 2 starts, he had one win in the previous nine starts.

Until Garland's win on Saturday in Cleveland, he only had one win in his last nine starts.

That was a bad stretch for the non-Contreras and McCarthy portion of the rotation.
   49. Bull Pain Posted: October 07, 2005 at 03:26 PM (#1669229)
Prospectus has the White Sox at 89% to win the series. That's even higher than the coin toss percentage of 87.5%. I really think it's closer to 75-80%
   50. In what respect, Craig K? Posted: October 07, 2005 at 03:40 PM (#1669257)

Speaking of nicknames, i've taken to calling 'Tek "Jarhead." Especially after he calls for a hittable pitch 0-2 with runners on in a close game.

I'm gonna have to hold my nose and agree with the CLT, that 'Tek's gamecalling prowess IS seriously overrated.

Sutcliffe, too. This is an all mouthbreather broadcast team.

I wanted to kill Berman for his call on Nixon's foul HR last game.

And his screaming call of a routine fly ball to center off Konerko's bat in the 8th.

Quick tip, Berman - calling everything as if it were exciting really takes away from the enjoyment of the game.

The "OH, NO!" after Graffanino's error bugged me, too.

   66. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 07, 2005 at 04:08 PM (#1669311)
That's interesting. Berman said (yeah, I know, Berman said something interesting, contain yourselves) Graffanino got the loudest ovation of any Red Sox player. I don't think that would be case if they hadn't won it all last year.
   67. The Jerry Royster Experience Posted: October 07, 2005 at 04:08 PM (#1669312)

   71. Sean McNally Posted: October 07, 2005 at 04:10 PM (#1669319)
If I was snarking I would have said Chicago has thrown a postseason series more recently than they've won one...

I would have added that Fox execs must be crying that Boston will be eliminated before they ever make it to prime time.

I hope Freddy does well. I believe he was suppose to put Chicago over the top when he was acquired last year, but didn't do much to prevent the fade.

This year, his numbers look pretty good. Are the Chicago fans happy with him. Has he become (to borrow the oppressor's slang) a True White Sox?
   75. incarnadine Posted: October 07, 2005 at 04:11 PM (#1669324)
