AL West Champion Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at AL East Champion New York Yankees - 8:19 PM ESPN

Series tied 1-1

LAA: Byrd (0-0, 0.00)
NYY: Johnson (0-0, 0.00)

Rain, rain stay away!

After a lackluster start, Randy Johnson has been a beast down the stretch. In six September starts, Johnson was 4-0 with an ERA of 2.48 and a 31/11 K/BB ratio in 36.1 innings.

The Johnson start means that the Yankees that Bad Flash Flaherty replaces Posada in the lineup. What’s that mean? It means this: .097/.147/.178. That’s not Flaherty’s line, but the difference between his less-than-sterling .165/.206/.252 and Posada’s .262/.352/.430.

For the Angels, the question is which Paul Byrd will show up - the Byrd from his last two starts: 0-1, 6.10 ERA or the Byrd from the four starts before that 3-1 0.68.

Rain is in the forecast.

Very good chance this doesn't get played tonight, and a good chance it doesn't get played tomorrow, either. NYC expecting 3-5" of rain.

This is terrible news for NYY, since it allows Anaheim to run Lackey and Colon out twice in a 5 gamer.

One more thing: this post is SECOND, like the Red Sox in the AL East.

To be fair, his last start of the season was the game after the Angels clinched, so I think - hung over, lacking focus, just looking to get his work in and prepare for the playoffs - you can throw that one out.

Now who's being silly about this?

Given the possibility of two rain outs, it will be interesting to see how Scocia plays it. Persumably he would leap at the chance to start Colon and Lackey in 3 and 4, espcially given Colon has pitched better on the road this season (his ten runs to two starts at the Stadium notwithstanding). On the other hand, if you work on the asumption they can't sweep at Yankee Stadium (possible but by no means a given) than you have Paul Byrd pitching a potential Game 5 aganist a well-rested Mussina

Are you saying the Angels should start a lousy pitcher at Yankee Stadium because they'd lose at least one game no matter who they started?

No, of course not. I'm just saying that while the rain delay is mostly in the Angels' favor at this point, if the series reaches Game 5, it might bite them in the butt.

torre was quoted as saying he's probably going to play sierra at DH tonight.
   10. Jeffo Posted: October 07, 2005 at 12:44 PM (#1668775)
Well if history is any guide, they won't cancel the game until after FOX's pre-game show, like they did in the ALCS last year. I felt bad for those poor fans then. Tonight those poor fans are me (among others of course). Any word on what time the games would be if tonight is washed out? I imagine Sunday's game would be a early day game with the travel, or is it all in FOX's hands?
   11. KronicFatigue Posted: October 07, 2005 at 12:49 PM (#1668792)
Jeffo, if the game gets postponed, do we use our ticket stubs for tomm, or do they re-issue us tickets at will call?
   12. Jeffo Posted: October 07, 2005 at 12:58 PM (#1668817)
The New York Times said that tonight's tickets (Home Game 1) would be used for tomorrow's game if there is a rainout, with Home Game 2 being used Sunday (not sure when on Sunday, but Sunday).
   13. Jeffo Posted: October 07, 2005 at 12:59 PM (#1668820)
Oh and I'm pretending I never saw #9.
   14. villainx Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:13 PM (#1668852)
This is why the Yankees need a dome.
   15. KronicFatigue Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:29 PM (#1668892)
if everyone knew this rain was coming, why didn't torre try and squeeze Randy in for game 2? I realize the point is moot b/c Wang pitched great, but still. A manager thinking ahead like that would be of value.
   16. Fat Al Posted: October 07, 2005 at 01:39 PM (#1668921)
torre was quoted as saying he's probably going to play sierra at DH tonight.

Um, why?
   17. KronicFatigue Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:09 PM (#1669040)
Um, why?

Isn't it obvious????

"I'm not discounting [Posada as a DH]," Torre said on a conference call Thursday. "But we'll look and decide what our options are against [Angels starter Paul] Byrd and go from there. Right now, the first five guys will stay the same and then we'll arrange it from there on out. I'm not saying [Posada] won't be the DH, but I think it's doubtful."

Sierra is likely, Torre said, "because he's probably the most adept at it. He's had the most experience. You know, he loves the pressure and all that. He certainly would be a consideration. I think he would be the first consideration, and then you work out and match them up from there.

"But again, we want to get [Sierra] involved because we know what he can bring to the table, especially being a switch-hitter, and they don't have a left-hander coming out of the bullpen. The fact that Ruben has been down this road before, he would probably be the No. 1 guy we would look at."
   18. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:15 PM (#1669060)
On the plus side, Ruben's bat speed is probably exactly right for Byrd's fastball

"This is terrible news for NYY, since it allows Anaheim to run Lackey and Colon out twice in a 5 gamer."

I'm fully expect the Yanks to just continue to beat the #### out of Colon, it's Lackey that worries me. I can't really remember how I feel about Washburn, so I don't know how I feel about this.
   20. AZ Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:43 PM (#1669146)
"But again, we want to get [Sierra] involved because we know what he can bring to the table, especially being a switch-hitter

Yeah, because we know that Posada doesn't switch hit.
   21. Fat Al Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:51 PM (#1669159)
It's like Torre doesn't watch the games. Ruben has looked completely lost at the plate this season, and it's been getting worse. He has a .265 OBP and 4 homers in 170 AB.

Putting him and Flaherty in the same starting lineup is insane.
   22. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:54 PM (#1669168)
"The fact that Ruben has been down this road before, he would probably be the No. 1 guy we would look at.""

And Posada has never played in the playoffs before either.

Just admit it Joe, you and Ruben are lovers.

I would like to see Ruben come off the bench at some point, just cuz I really do think he is clutch, or at least a very good pinch hitter. Starting him is wasting him.
   23. Fat Al Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:55 PM (#1669173)
His OBP does go up to .277 against lefties. Of course, Byrd is a righty.

Oh yeah, in September Sierra had 61 ABs and K'd 14 times, managing an OPS of .384.
   24. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 07, 2005 at 02:57 PM (#1669178)
Then again, a slider speed bat might do well against a slider speed fastball. That's why Bernie hit Byrd so well this year, I think.
   25. bebop Posted: October 07, 2005 at 04:02 PM (#1669297)
We must have Sierra with his 148/188/197 stats for September. I'd feel better with Crosby in cf and Bernie dh for defense or even Lawton(not on roster) DHing
   26. salajander Posted: October 07, 2005 at 04:03 PM (#1669298)
Well, I have a ticket to tonight's game and two tickets to tomorrow's game. I wonder when I'll be attending these games? That weather forecast looks .. grim.
   27. Fat Al Posted: October 07, 2005 at 04:44 PM (#1669447)
It's starting to look pretty dark in NYC
   28. Ricky Posted: October 07, 2005 at 05:14 PM (#1669573)
Have tickets for tonight as well, but it's not looking promising outside. Was looking forward to being one of the 50 or so Angels fans there tonight.
   29. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: October 07, 2005 at 05:44 PM (#1669656)
I think one reason Torre might be hesitant to start Posada at DH is that this would lock Posada out of taking over at catcher in later innings. This way he can pinch hit Posada for Flaherty in a key situation.
   30. Halofan Posted: October 07, 2005 at 06:10 PM (#1669722)
Actually, Byrd was not drinking at the party after they clinched, he was eating a quesadilla.
   31. bunyon Posted: October 07, 2005 at 06:14 PM (#1669733)
If they get rained out tonight they should play two tomorrow. I know they won't, but they should.

Or on Sunday if they get rained out both days. Actually, they should just fly back to LA and play there.
   32. Psychedelic Red Pants Posted: October 07, 2005 at 06:58 PM (#1669884)
What's it looking like in New York? Will they play?
   33. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: October 07, 2005 at 07:33 PM (#1670007)
Apparently it's cloudy, at least as of now.
   34. Bob T Posted: October 07, 2005 at 07:37 PM (#1670026)
This game could be like Game 4 of the 1977 NLCS.
   35. AZ Posted: October 07, 2005 at 07:49 PM (#1670073)
Actually, they should just fly back to LA and play there.

And let the Yankees have four outs in the top of every inning. I'd say that would just about offset the loss of two homes games.
   36. AZ Posted: October 07, 2005 at 07:51 PM (#1670078)
If I buy the Emanski defensive tape, and send it to Robby Cano during the offseason, do you think he would watch it?
   37. AZ Posted: October 07, 2005 at 08:03 PM (#1670097)
Morgan going with the violet sweater, pcoket square; and tie with violet pattern. I like it,, although I'd prefer the sweater to be v-neck. Gotta let the tie shine.
   38. AZ Posted: October 07, 2005 at 08:05 PM (#1670102)
If the game starts, and there is a delay, what is the maximum delay after which Torre would send RJ back into the game? Would he send him back in after a 2 hour delay? 3 hours?

I would think that barring big puddles forming on the field, this game will go the distance. I think MLB has procedures in place for suspending games in this situation also.

No one has ever won a postseason game that didn't go the distance.
