ALCS Game 2:  AL West Champ LA Angels at AL Central Champ Chicago White Sox, 8:05 PM ET on FOX or FX

J. Washburn vs. M. Buehrle

Angels lead series 1-0.

Nice job by the Angels yesterday, who had to be tired.  It’s kind of nice to have ALCS games that don’t last 4 hrs.

It sucks that the White Sox couldn't take advantage of what was essentially an AitC™ outing. That was a pretty embarrassing effort on offense - they just handed the game to the Angels, pretty much.

That's not to take anything away from the Angels - they're a heck of a team, and they don't let you get away with mistakes.

This series isn't over, but losing game one means that tonight is almost a must-win for the Sox.

Ozzie, please stop believing the idiots in the press that say giving away outs like cheap halloween candy is the reason the Sox got where they are. I ran out of expletives after seeing Jermaine's bunt attempt, leaving me nothing but stunned silence for AJ's caught stealing.

Go Halos! Maybe more Angels success will force the Dodgers to get their act together. I'm sick of their irrelevance for the past 15 years.

even the idiots were knocking the Dye bunt.

"Ozzie, please stop believing the idiots in the press that say giving away outs like cheap halloween candy is the reason the Sox got where they are."

Ozzie's the one that convinced the writers in the first place! The writers are just too lazy and stupid to figure out that he was wrong.

It's not so much that the idea is wrong, it's that he was asking the wrong people to do it.

Yes, major leaguers should be able to get a bunt down, but at some point you should just acknowledge that Dye and Rowand are incapable of bunting and don't have them try.

Yes, tonight approaches a "must win" situation for the Sox.

Well Al now we are in the soup today Ozzie Guillen held a team meeting and he said that our problem is that we do not visualize. Take a deep breath close your eyes and see in front of you of what you most want to atchieve and you will atchieve it tonight said Ozzie Guillen and Keefe do me a favor and do not start visualizing a waffle cone full of Denali Moose Tracks. So the boys started to see what they most wanted and to say what it was and so the club house was like Wed. night meeting come to Jesus with all the witnessing Al. I see a fat hanging pitch from Jarhead Washboard says Conoco. Little Gucci yells Threeple! Threeple! I See Leaves of Green, Red Roses Too, says Joe Creed but people look at him funny. I see the ground ball, says Your eBay, I am one with the ground ball, I am the ground ball. I see the mighty Guerrero taking strike three, says Burly. I see us not getting caught stealing so god damn much, says Carl Everett but Ozzie Guillen told him to go soak his head.
   8. Kris Posted: October 12, 2005 at 03:47 PM (#1679712)
Ozzie didn't need to do much convincing, the local press hated the old can't run, can't bunt White Sox offense. When Ozzie got hired they applauded it because they thought he would teach these stupid sluggers how to play the gritty NL style way that won the World Series for Florida.

Ozzie goes through stretches when he is bunt happy. He'll not call for one for a few games and then all of a sudden, he's telling Crede to lay one down in the third. Yesterday was one of those days.

I could almost stand it if these guys actually knew how to bunt. Uribe's good at it, but pretty much everybody else sucks, Podsednik is only okay at best.

Iguchi is a good bunter. Most Japanese players have good fundamental skills.
   10. Kris Posted: October 12, 2005 at 04:31 PM (#1679822)
That's true Iguchi is a solid bunter. That is kind of a bad thing on this team since it means he's asked to bunt a lot even though he is a pretty solid hitter. Whatever, I'm going to be in my same seat tonight, go Sox.
   11. Anonymous Observer Posted: October 12, 2005 at 04:33 PM (#1679829)
Most Japanese players have good fundamental skills.

Do they have other skills, like nunchuck skills, or bowhunting skills, or computer hacking skills? Because girls only like guys who have great skills.

Did Ozzie call for the Dye bunt and the Pierzynski steal? Last night, I was thinking more along the lines that...

-Chone Figgins was probably playing Jermaine Dye back, and Jermaine thought that if he could get a halfway decent bunt down the thirdbaseline, he'd have an easy single. Now, I'm sure that either Joey Cora or Ozzie Guillen let JD know that he was playing so far back, but to actually call for the bunt? I don't know about that...

and, w/r/t Pierzynski, I thought that he went on his own. I really doubt it was a botched hit-and-run. Usually, when they've performed the hit-and-run this year (it wasn't a whole lot), they did it with someone like Iguchi, or Uribe, guys who seem to concentrate more and make sure to make contact when they know they need to. I really can't see Ozzie calling for a hit-and-run with one of his worst contact hitters at the plate, and the second slowest runner on the team on first.
   14. Urban Faber Posted: October 12, 2005 at 05:20 PM (#1679920)
Dye was almost certainly bunting on his own. The reaction in the seats around me was one of shock.
   15. Jack Keefe Posted: October 12, 2005 at 05:29 PM (#1679933)
Al now they are asking about our tack ticks do the Sox bunt and steel on our own. The answer is yes Al. When Ozzie Guilen explained Lidle Ball to us he said that we must bunt all the time and steal all the time. This caused some high jinks when little Gucci would take guys pocket change from their trousers and one day German Die was crawling around the club house looking for his contack lens and Gucci rapped him in the kisser with a bat and when Die started yelping Gucci yelled "Bunt Die!" and Ozzie Guillen had to explain to him in sign language that he must only bunt and steal during games well we could not blame Gucci too much he is an Asian American. Anyways as I was saying we bunt at will and the way we stop is if Ozzie Guillen takes it off. We had a sign for taking it off which was Ozzie Guillen would stand up on the dug out steps and scream For Gods Sake Hit Away only Buck Show Halter stole that sign and now we have no way of stopping it Al.

Bengie Molina is tonight's Angels DH, with Figgins going to CF against the lefty and Quinlan in at 3B. Sox sticking with the same lineup that brought you last night's Game 1 loss.

Guerrero is an honorary Molina, with the way he runs at this point.
   22. Urban Faber Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:32 PM (#1680195)
So was that an out? I had the misfortune of looking at the screen right as they showed the play and they went to a commercial.
   23. CWS Keith Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:32 PM (#1680198)
I should say, though, that was a pretty bad jump on the ball. That, or Joe Buck aluded to him not even being ready as Buehrle threw the first pitch.

Still a real nice throw.

Vlad runs fast enough to score from second on a sacrifice bunt. His speed is fine.
   25. The Jerry Royster Experience Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:35 PM (#1680203)
Not that the White Sox will be able to take advantage of that E-1.

Something new I learned today:

Jarrod Washburn had a top-five ERA+ in the AL this year.

It's pretty obvious Scott's speed made him overthrow that one.

Thanks Jarrod.

In Charlotte, Vlad would have been out.

At least the White Sox successfully bunted.

Dye will homer, and the runs will be credited to Iguchi's ability to get the bunt down.

Called the number most closely related to the University Cable service. Got a person.

Said that "FX is showing the FOX feed instead of showing its own," which seems to be true, (as the commercials are exactly the same, et al.)

She said, "All right," mumbled something about checking into it, and hung up on me.

I wonder if they went away from the Game 1 Tuesday night/Game 2 Wednesday afternoon format because Atlanta had trouble selling tickets to the day game after being in the playoffs so often.

I liked that way better, even though the Sox and Angels would have played in the afternoon today.
