"Science and art," wrote Herophilus, "have nothing to show, strength is incapable of effort, wealth is useless, and eloquence is powerless, where there is no health."

I would add baseball to that.

   28. Capital City Goofball Posted: October 14, 2006 at 04:42 PM (#2211389)
DETROIT (AP) _ Fox baseball broadcaster Steve Lyons has been
fired for making a racially insensitive comment directed at
colleague Lou Piniella's Hispanic heritage on the air during Game 3
of the American League championship series.
The network confirmed Saturday that Lyons was dismissed after
Friday's comments. He has been replaced for the remainder of the
series by Los Angeles Angels announcer Jose Mota.
``Steve Lyons has been relieved of his Fox Sports duties for
making comments on air that the company found inappropriate,''
network spokesman Dan Bell said.
Lyons had been working in the booth for the ALCS alongside Thom
Brennaman and Piniella.
Piniella, approached before Saturday's Game 4, declined to
comment on the situation except to say: ``No, he's not here
today.''

Two down. C'mon Jeremy.
   30. Danny Posted: October 14, 2006 at 04:44 PM (#2211391)
After Piniella had used a little Spanish earlier in the game...
Lyons said that Piniella was "hablaing Espanol" -- butchering the conjugation for the word "to speak" -- and added, "I still can't find my wallet."

"I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit too close to him now," Lyons continued.

Fox executives told Lyons after the game he had been fired.

   34. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: October 14, 2006 at 04:46 PM (#2211396)
I don't really think what Lyons said is so much ethnically insensitive than stupid and incomprehensible. Which is par for the course with him.

Why does Brennaman think he needs to explain what the GED is?

Because Piniella didn't seem to understand what a GED is

That's because Piniella went to high school in Dickety Three, but I think most of the American populace is familiar with the concept. I could be wrong, though.

I guess they decided that Lyons was implying that Spanish-speakers are wallet thieves? It sounds to me like Lyons is a moron who makes jokes that (A) aren't funny and (B) don't actually make much sense.
