ALDS Travel Chatter

Yes, both series are off but some Sox fans requested it, so here we are…

I think Boston and Chicago probably flew out of O’Hare, right into Logan, but if it were me, I’d have flown Southwest from Midway to Providence and rented a car…

The Angels and Yanks should have probably taken the red-eye from LAX to LaGuardia or JFK, although they could save a little money if they don’t mind stopping and changing planes.

The Sox hook up tomorrow at 4:19 on ESPN while the Yanks and Halos tangle in prime time and on Fox.

In fairness to Tony G., the Pantload didn't HAVE to give up a three run ding-dong.

I still "canstandja"...tfbg9.

I'm glad the error came when it did, of course, but I wish it had happened to someone else.

I always liked Tony Graffanino. He was a really nice utility infielder for the White Sox and a great return on Tanyon Sturtze. He never complained or griped about his role, even when he was tearing the cover off the ball.

It's a shame, really. If the White Sox go on to take this series (something I'm still not confident about) Graffanino will be the goat, but Red Sox fans will be forgetting how he stabilised a weak position for them down the stretch.

I'm going to assume the Yankees-Angels game on Saturday is an afternoon game ... doesn't it have to be, to give them time to return to the west coast for Game 5 if need be?

10/8 - ALAALALA @ NYY 4 p.m.
10/9 NYY @ ALALALALA 7:30 p.m. (if necessary)

I would assume that game 5 in a Yankees/Angels game would be a 7:00 PST start.

It's gonna rain here in Boston until next Wednesday.

Agreed on Graffanino. I thought it was unwise for the Sox to let him sign with the Royals for what amounted to, like, $50,000 more. Especially when he was considered to be one of the front office's favorite players.

I hope he redeems himself next year.

I didn't know LaGuardia had cross-country non-stops. I thought you either had to change planes or fly into Newark or JFK. If you're going to change planes anyway, why not fly out of John Wayne? I've always liked the statue.
   10. Bull Pain Posted: October 06, 2005 at 12:32 PM (#1666831)
That's an ugly weather forecast for Boston.
   11. Cabbage Posted: October 06, 2005 at 12:41 PM (#1666843)
If its a charter flight, the'll get to use the general aviation terminal. Then, the only real issues are traffic to the airport (not a problem today in Chicago) and weather.

The weather don't look low enough in either Boston or NY to prevent jets from landing. There might be some in-air delays, but I would expect anything hellacious.

As for playing baseball, you're guess is as good as mine

For the Yankees, I am glad we split out there. I really am just happy to be here this year.

However, Unless their bats wake the #### up, we will only be here for a couple more days. We left tons of runners on base yesterday. Now most of that was Tino, and some of that was good defense, but yikes.

Joe, if we do advance, I am begging you to shoot tino and put in andy phillips. If Giambi needs a caddy, lets make it one who can actually carry his clubs

I would assume that game 5 in a Yankees/Angels game would be a 7:00 PST start.

Nope. If that series goes 5, the schedule is ridiculous. 8:00 pm Friday, so I guess that's why they give them the late afternoon slot (4:00 eastern) on Saturday, but if there's a game 5, they have to get on a plane Saturday night to the west coast and play a game starting at 4:30 local time. Isn't this the weekend they change the clocks? If so, they would at least get an extra hour between games 4 and 5.
   14. Fat Al Posted: October 06, 2005 at 12:46 PM (#1666850)
And the NYC forecast looks similarly iffy.
   15. Psychedelic Red Pants Posted: October 06, 2005 at 01:06 PM (#1666894)
FWIW, you can fly from Midway to Logan. In my experience, it's significantly cheaper. Going down to Providence only makes sense on last-minute trips, as Southwest's penalties/overcharges for late reservations aren't nearly as severe.
   16. Jack Keefe Posted: October 06, 2005 at 01:20 PM (#1666924)
Hey Al do you think some of the guys got to fly to Bos. that is odd cause Ozzie Guillen told me to rent a car and pick up his newphew in Toledo on the way. We are just coming into Zanesville and I hope I am in Bos. in time to take infield with all the guys tomorrow Al.

I like how we are actually discussing the logistics of travel...

And SJ, don't forget, the Yanks hit like crapola on the road but are a force at home.

Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
   18. Bob T Posted: October 06, 2005 at 02:20 PM (#1667070)
I would think that the Angels and Yankees flew out on charters from John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana (but really more Irvine) to New York.
   19. Bob T Posted: October 06, 2005 at 02:20 PM (#1667073)
Hope is a thing with feathers.

Clocks are changed October 30.

And if they take possible travel to the west coast for a game into account when setting the schedule Saturday, if will be the first time they ever did.

Wasn't it also that the Royals promised him a starting position? I wish the White Sox had kept Graff, too, and I agree that I wish anyone else on the field for Boston had made that error.

McNally, thanks for the thread.

Anbody see the Daily Quickie on page 2? He's calling it the Curse of Bellhorn! lmao. If Bellhorn comes up in a big situation sometime during this playoffs, i might find myself actually rooting for the Yankees.

I would wish it on Millar, but "un"fortunately, he was on the bench at the time.

Today is the 46th anniversary of the last White Sox victory in a World Series game, at the L.A. Coliseum.

Sox hitting coach Greg Walker was born on that day, as was Oil Can Boyd, for whatever that's worth.

I would wish it on Millar, but "un"fortunately, he was on the bench at the time.

I would have preferred to see Olerud make it, just for his being on the 1993 Blue Jays and 2000 Mariners. Otherwise, I like Olerud.

Of course, the headlines would have been fun if Ramírez had made a key error.

I feel you Vince, but I think Rowand catching all those long drives hit by future HoFer John Olerud is enough payback for me as long as it continues for at least one more Pale Hoes victory.

   37. Bull Pain Posted: October 06, 2005 at 04:41 PM (#1667451)
Winn was great, actually. 58 games, 231 AB, .359/.391/.680! including 14 homers. 14 home runs had been his previous season high. He had 6 with the M's before the trade.

His September stats had to have won a few people their fantasy leagues:
.447/.479/.877 in 28 games.
   38. VG Posted: October 06, 2005 at 06:02 PM (#1667670)

September WINN + Barry would be a formidable OF if they decide to return next year.
   40. VG Posted: October 06, 2005 at 06:45 PM (#1667748)
I'm guessing the chances are exceedingly thin that Winn catches that lightning in a bottle again.

Vince, BL, Eraser (??) -- any luck on getting potential ALCS tickets?

I was at school, so I wasn't able to try for them myself, but I've heard that Ticketmaster was a real sonuvva #####. I really wish that they'd just sell 'em at the box office and allow people to camp outside for them...

Otherwise, I'm extremely happy today. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who pretty much conceded the double play on Uribe's grounder, and, after that, the atmosphere last night was awesome (before that too, but especially after).

And I have to say 'good job' to Ozzie, too. I loved the move of bringing in Jenks an inning early, in the higher pressure/more important situation.

How do you give up ten hits in an inning?!?!

I didn't have any luck with Tickets :(

It sucks, but I'll be super happy to watch a championship run from a neighborhood sports bar if that's what happens!

Yes. Four for Game 1 and two for Game 7. A friend got through with four for Game 3, and he'll set me up with one of those, if it occurs.

Still a long way to go to get there.

If they get there. Long way to go.

Vince, if you don't mind my asking, how the hell did you get in?

My friends down at U of I are telling me that they had about 10-15 people trying to get in (I guess they pretty much packed a computer lab down there), right at noon, and had no luck.

My brother also gave it a shot at noon, same result.

There's also a crapload of people over at the other two Sox fansites, and there's about four people I know who actually were able to get tickets through Ticketmaster online.

The whole situation really pisses me off, but I'm glad to hear that you were able to score a couple of games.
