ARI (29-20) at NYM (30-19) - 7:10 PM EDT

ARI: Vargas (5-2, 4.93 ERA)
NYM: Trachsel (2-4, 4.99 ERA)

Nothing gets you ready for the mundanities of work like watching a four-hour long Steve Trachsel start.

I got news for you...Vargas is just as slow as Trachsel.....really, I'm not kidding you.

When he gets men on base...the game comes to a screeching halt. He looks in, look at runner....looks in....looks at runner......brings hands to set position......looks in....looks at runner.......steps off back of mound......repeat process.

Everyones worst nightmare will be if they are both allowing alot of baserunners, but working out of the jams....and they both go about 6 innings. The freakin game will take forever.

At least they are in the East time zone....so I have a chance to get to bed before midnight here in Arizona ;)

Not sure why, exactly, but I'm actually expecting a decent outing out of Sir Speedy (Mets' Edition) tonight.

Has anyone noticed Beltran's now got the 5th highest OPS in the NL, highlighted by his sporty little .622 SLG? Not bad for a bust of a signing, eh?

Probably moves up to 4th if you use OPS+. Ensberg is just .001 ahead.

God, I went to Macy's to buy a suit today and when I'm getting ready to pay, the cashier asks me, "Getting ready for prom, eh?" He killed my game right then and there.

Beltran and Wright are 8th and 9th, respectively, in the NL in EQA.

Adding in defense, Beltran is probably the third most valuable player in the NL so far.

Well, Soler's name is back there now. And while I certainly wouldn't mind Soler for Zito (duh), if it's Milledge and Soler, I'd lead the lynch mob with pitchforks and torches in hand to string Omar and Jeff Wilpon up from the highest light tower at Shea.

Which syllable of un-touch-a-ble don't these rumor mongers understand?
   12. Rob Base Posted: May 29, 2006 at 06:54 PM (#2042673)

I'd kill for a cashier to think I was getting ready for prom. Of course, how many blind cashiers can you really hope to run into in a lifetime, right?

That would be bad. I suppose I would be able to tell the difference depending on how he asked the question, "Getting ready for prom, eh?" with a smile or with a nasty look.

NLDS preview this week?

If the Mets are there, it would suit me just fine. Whom-the heck-ever. But I'm not sure I could really stand the Levski/Base chatter unless they both promised to be on their best behavior. Maybe not even then.

Minor league update:

Milledge today: 3-6 with a 2B. He's hitting .291/.424/.467

MacLean today: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 HR, 4/1 K/BB. He's got a 1.93 ERA and 24/9 K/BB in 32.2 innings.

Pelfrey yesterday: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 HR, 5/1 K/BB. He's got a 3.49 ERA and 30/13 K/BB in 28 innings.

Anyway....seriously, if the season ended today, and all that crap, these two teams would be facing off in the NLDS.

Interesting matchup of teams.

D Backs have scored more runs...but of course play in a hitters park. Mets have a slightly better team Eqa, .266-.262

D Backs starting pitching has actually been very good lately. The Mets lead the NL in innings by bullpen, and Inn per game by bullpen, (over 3.5 IP per game by pen) This was also a major issue for the D backs until a recent stretch of 8 straight quality starts.

Man, would I love to be in NY for Wednesdays Webb/Martinez matchup.

So why is it that my desktop computer SAYS that it is connected to, and receiving, the signal from my wireless network, and yet will not connect to the internet, even though my laptop is getting the exact same signal from the same network, and IS connecting just fine? I've tried everything I can think of, but I cannot restore the connection. Any ideas?

Sam, try shutting off both computers AND your wireless modem. Then turn the modem back on and then reboot both computers.

God, I went to Macy's to buy a suit today and when I'm getting ready to pay, the cashier asks me, "Getting ready for prom, eh?" He killed my game right then and there.

Couple years ago, on Halloween, I was in a costume shop, buying a President's mask, because my friends and I were going out to bars as the characters in Point Break. As I was buying my mask, the cashier says "Going for a President's theme, huh? I already like your hat." Thing was, my hat was a hat that I wear all the time. It would have been fashionable too if it was still the 1950s.

Not that I needed the cashier to tell me that I'm a weirdo. I already know. Plus, the comment didn't make any sense, since I was buying a Reagan mask. I don't remember Reagan being known for his hats.

D Backs hitters splits vs. right handed pitchers

C. Counsell ss .304 / .350 /.409
E. Byrnes cf .286 / .362 /.488
C. Tracy 3b .297 / .356 /.517
L. Gonzalez lf .321 / .397 /.545
C. Jackson 1b .321 / .404 / .526
S. Green rf .342 /.390 / .412
J. Estrada c .327 / .365 /.558
O. Hudson 2b .214 /.287 /.256

Check out those OBP's. No super high slugging percentages, but except for Hudson, every guy in the lineup has been a very tough out vs. righties. And Hudson is "heating up" lately. Eric Byrnes overachieving sure has helped, but I think even Rob Base would admit Josh Byrnes has done a pretty darn good job of putting together a good lineup on the cheap without any long term commitments.

Anyway, did you guys see Ronaldo rejected a $120MM offer from the MLS? That's too bad. I wish we could have gotten rid of him and maybe acquired future World Cup break-out star and MVP Carlos Tevez in his place. Think the Red Bulls would be interested in Robinho? He'd fit in nicely with all those losers playing for the Metrostars.

Things have gone pretty well, but as you pointed out yesterday, there is a good amount of overachieving in that lineup. I just don't see how it can make up for the non-Webb pitching staff. But, I've been wrong before.

No doubt...the offense has played over their heads....but then again, maybe I was wrong about that.

I think the Dodgers are better, and better positioned to win the NL West. But....they have a few key guys that have very long and ugly injury histories. So nobody can pencil them in just yet. However their team eqa is .274, and they have some decent pitching and are getting Gagne back this week. PLus they have the depth to deal for another pitcher.
   50. Rob Base Posted: May 29, 2006 at 07:49 PM (#2042769)

   51. Sam M. Posted: May 29, 2006 at 07:51 PM (#2042773)
I'd say the Diamondbacks are "better positioned to win the NL West," Shoewizard, for one key reason. They have awesome depth from which to deal, should they choose to do it, with all that young talent. This organization can add tremendous talent down the stretch if this year looks like it's theirs for the taking. Not saying they SHOULD, but they have the option, probably more than any other team in baseball.

   60. Bob Koo Posted: May 29, 2006 at 07:54 PM (#2042785)
I think Trachsel has the same moxie and know-how to pitch; it's just that his stuff is in serious decline from a couple years ago.
   61. Sam M. Posted: May 29, 2006 at 07:55 PM (#2042789)
The pitch to Tracy, OTOH, was a meatball. Ugh.

Gonzo had 4 homers vs. trachsel in 27 at bats going into today. So that walk may not be the worst result.
   65. Sam M. Posted: May 29, 2006 at 07:57 PM (#2042798)
Here we go with #### Trachsel. Fidgeting, getting behind, annoying. Just BS pitching. Put the homer behind you, turdhead, and pitch.

He hasn't been getting calls lately because he is getting a rep for ######## about calls too much. Word is getting around to the umps. I wish he would stop ########, otherwise he is going to rob himself of his biggest asset.,
   68. Sam M. Posted: May 29, 2006 at 07:59 PM (#2042807)
I don't think Cohen's making excuses for Trachsel. I think he's KNOCKING Trachsel for being Mr. Thin Skin and letting things get to him.

Can I just point out that Connor Jackson raises the attractiveness quotient on the Diamondbacks. A lot.

The 0-1 pitch to Jackson was right down the middle. It's just that Trachsel badly missed his spot on the inside corner.

That third strike to Green, though, was a total gift.

Ryan Howard's defense is the worst I think I've ever seen from a "real" first baseman. Man, he's awful. But the guy can hit. I'm not sure the Phillies should regret that choice.

   90. shoewizard Posted: May 29, 2006 at 08:12 PM (#2042853)
Howard is hitting .307 and has 44 RBI to go with those 17 homers.

He is making 355,000 and won't be a free agent for 5 more years.

Thome's contract will pay him 06:$12.5M, 07:$14M, 08:$14M, 09:$13M ($3M buyout)
Thats 53 million. Thats alot of coin.

So all that money saved can go elsewhere, and the Phillies will get similar production. I can't see, how on any level, this is considered a bad move for the Phillies.

I know this is not the time to bring this up - but Mr. Overbay's OPS over in Toronto is a healthy .885. I'm just sayin'

all that money saved can go elsewhere, and the Phillies will get similar production.

You're right. But the way things look now, the Phils aren't getting similar production. I'm just glad to see Thome (and Nomar) back in form. He and Edgar were two of my fav hitters to watch in terms of approach to hitting.

Rask, would you rather the Mets had Overbay instead of Delgado? Because if you are, that's just wrong.
