Pedro is the awesomeness!

This figures to be a gem, but I'm passing up the chance to see it for the novelty of watching the Yankees on a big screen in Bryant Park

Not that this is really relevant to anything, but I was just looking at some stats on ESPN and David Wright and Scott Rolen are putting up friggin' identical hitting lines.

David .325 .398 .546
Rolen .327 .401 .544

Wright's got the harder park, but Rolen has been doing this all year long right off massive shoulder surgery, so it evens out. :-)

I've discovered why the Mets keep Matsui the Lesser around... Look who he brings out to the yard! Seriously, what gives here?

I don't even remember her having one on Who's the Boss? Talk about a late bloomer.

Alyssa Milano has a retainer?

For clarification - its a retainer for her teeth... her breasts on the other hand... those are completely unretained.

She's got a little Anna Benson thing going on. Props to Deadspin?

Yup, Deadspin and What Would Tyler Durden Do?.

Brains and a heart to go with her looks. God may be a Yankees fan, but Alyssa Milano is a Mets fan.

Hm, wasn't even Cerrone who made the post. Weird.

Jeez, how can we compete with Metsblog? They have their own shirts.

Regarding Pedro and the home run ball:

I, like other Met fans, have been concerned about the home runs Pedro has been allowing this season. I had the feeling that he was turning into the type of Greg Maddux has been the last few seasons, just with a better strikeout rate. But I figured that a guy who allows more homers should also allow more extrabase hits in general. For example, Maddux allowed 29 homers, 50 doubles, and 2 triples. Pedro's allowed 9 homers this year but only 5 doubles and 1 triple. Basically, I'm not going to worry about the homers unless he starts to give up more extra base hits.

There's a tiny blurb on Emeigh's article but the Mets failed to sign Pedro Beato. Which kinda sucks.

I wish I could say I was excited about this game, but I figure with Webb on the mound we won't be scoring any runs for Pedro again.

Boo Byrnes!
   22. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:14 PM (#2045987)
And when the hell did Eric Byrnes learn to hit breaking stuff from righties? The next thing you know he'll be taking good routes in the outfield.

On the D backs broadcast, Brenneman had to justify putting Clark in the lineup by saying he was there for his "DEFENSE".

Granted, Jackson is not that good a firstbaseman...but who freakin cares. He had a 12 game hit streak a while ago where he was benched 3 times in the middle of it.

God....I could just shoot whosever idea it was to sign him to a 2 year extension with a no trade clause. Now they are stuck with him and HAVE to play him.....STUPID!!

I think Clark also has some good numbers against Pedro. Conor righthanded as well so Clark playing today isn't that bad an idea.
   47. shoewizard Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2046041)
Webb's control looks a little off early.

BTW, that was only the 10th walk he has allowed all year, and 3 of them have come in the first inning. Probably a touch of nerves. He knows whats at stake. This is his coming out party, New York, big stage, head to head with Pedro. The "national" (i.e. east coast centric) media has only recently acknowledged what he has been doing. He must feel alot of pressure to come up bit tonight.

Those numbers didn't come THIS year. Playing Clark over Jackson is a terrible idea, any day of the week, against ANY pitcher. Clark is TOAST

All this talk about Floyd and Milledge has me thinking that having him around NEXT year for Milledge's first full year wouldn't really be a bad thing. At all.
   56. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2046062)
Byrnes with the Shinjo. A hop, skip and a jump.

Depends. I wouldn't give Cliff a two-year deal, but one year for 5M? In a second.
   58. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:42 PM (#2046068)
I'm sure you thought he was toast last year as well. If Jackson had Clark's numbers, you'd probably say it's a small sample. Clark isn't a great player but he's slugged .500+ from 2003-2005.
   59. shoewizard Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:42 PM (#2046069)
Byrnes hit that wall before he caught that ball......

Can't go over the wall? No problem....go through it !!

Playing Clark over Jackson is a terrible idea, any day of the week, against ANY pitcher. Clark is TOAST.

Oh, now come on. There's nothing wrong with giving Clark a start every two or three weeks, is there? What's the most games Jackson's ever played in a season? If you're going to give him a few nights off, surely Pedro is a guy it makes sense to rest him against.
   61. Banta Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:43 PM (#2046072)

You really start to appreciate how great he once was... with a fastball that sat at 96+ with movement. I wonder how anyone EVER hit him back then.
   70. Sam M. Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:49 PM (#2046094)
The question is, does Floyd take a one-year deal?

I doubt the Mets offer it. I think they see Milledge as taking his spot, really. But to answer the question: highly unlikely. Surely, SOMEONE will come in and offer Cliff Floyd two years, won't they? And he'd take it instead of a one-year offer from the Mets.
   71. Raskolnikov Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:51 PM (#2046097)
Emad, Pedro in 99 was the greatest pitcher I had ever seen, better than Gooden in '85, IMHO.
   72. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:51 PM (#2046098)
Pedro calls Conti his "white daddy" and he's the one who taught him the change he throws. That said, that interview was far too long.

Has there ever been a pitcher that has struck people out as often as Pedro does throwing as softly as he does now? Even last year, when he was striking people out at a good rate he was throwing hard.
   73. Joshemy Posted: May 31, 2006 at 07:51 PM (#2046099)

You are totally missing SEVERAL points.

1.) They should have sold high on Clarks big year and got something good for him. NOT given him a two year extension with a no trade clause when you have Conor Jackson waiting in the wings. The very stupidity of that move right there offends me. And I will never let it go. I am only consoled by the fact that the guy who gave him that extension is gone, and I don't think Josh Byrnes would make such a move.

2.) I am just as "in tune" to sample size issues as you are. And I know Clarks history and stat lines as well or better than you. I had him projected for over an .800 OPS this year. I don't expect him to quite suck THIS bad all year. BUT....I watch every D back game and have seen everyone of his at bats, half of them from behind home plate. He is not the same guy as last year, and it's physical. His bat speed is much slower. Towards the end of last year, the last two weeks, his back and knees acted up again. I don't think he will ever be as healthy and strong as he was during the middle of last year.

3.) Conor Jackson is a stud, and a centerpiece of this teams future. It doesn't do him, OR the team any good to keep sitting him because of his defense or against tough righties. All it does is retard his development.

I hope this clarifies what you are "sure I thought"

You are right that I shouldn't have assumed that I knew what you thought and I agree that it wasn't a good idea to sign him to an extension. But I think it's too early to make the conclusion he's done and tonight is a good night to give him a start when you consider that he's better than Jackson defensively, he's lefthanded and has hit well against Pedro.

That is one part premature, two parts WAY presumptious, and three parts MASSIVELY optimistic.

But I sure hope you're right! ;-)

If Clark is a defensive improvement over Jackson, it's a pretty marginal one at this point. He's worthless.

But that's a good point. HR rate generally correlates well with ML success, especially when talking about studs.

What was the question?

Last Mets second baseman to hit a homer in consecutive games.
