Big series. The Cubs have played a lot better at home so far, and they can't afford to lose 2 of 3 here again. It'll be tough, since Arizona is the class on the NL right now. Today's pitching matchup is a mismatch, and quite a few guys in the offense are slumping (Lee, Ramirez, Fukudome, De Rosa). The DBacks killed the Cubs last year, in both the regular season and the playoffs.

Also, Dan Haren is really good.

Light winds currently out of the NNE. Small chance of showers on and off for the rest of the afternoon.

Agreed this is not really the time you want to be facing the D-Backs. That said, Lilly has actually pitched pretty well his last three starts (Game Scores of 60, 61, and 56; compare Haren's 27, 61, 64).

Incidentally, I met and chatted with Michael Lewis last night at a corporate event. Nice guy, and -- no real surprise -- a very knowledgeable baseball fan.

Sweet,

Did he stand around in front of a microphone worrying about his health and trying to sell you Boku fruit drinks?

I'll admit having to resort to Wiki to get that reference, which I then tried to parlay into a joke about 2004 Southern League MVP and erstwhile Cubs prospect Richard Lewis, to no avail.

I think Chris Young is applying to be an official Cub killer.

It amazes me that they really put DBacks on their uniforms.

Looks like a chilly day at the ballpark.

Its time for some bats to make some noise.

As opposed to? Snakes? Rattlers?
   12. Dan Posted: May 09, 2008 at 03:35 PM (#2774879)
Young seems to be adapting to hitting 3rd pretty well.
   13. Sweet Posted: May 09, 2008 at 03:42 PM (#2774886)
Alright! Ted Lilly, ladies and gentlemen.
   14. 1k5v3L Posted: May 09, 2008 at 03:45 PM (#2774888)
Ugh. A hit by Ted ##### Lilly? Are you kidding me?

Ted Lilly doesn't look nearly as helpless at the plate this year.

Quiet chatter for a Friday afternoon. Lilly's looked good today.

Bob Brenly just mentioned the decision involved in giving up an out to move a runner a long. The revolution is on, Gents.

Eric Byrnes sucks.
   19. Bunny Vincennes Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:33 PM (#2774943)
I hate that ###### Eric Byrnes.

Can we all acknowledge that Reed Johnson has gone back to being Reed Johnson? I'm not sure what the hell they're doing with Pie these days.
   22. Bunny Vincennes Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2774955)
I was just wondering if the Cubs got that same hot streak that Kendall had for 17 days last year out of Johnson.
   23. retro-shiite Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2774956)
I was hoping for a little insurance there. This is definitely not a Wood-proof lead with 3-4-5 coming up.
   24. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2774959)
Wood seems to often missing his spots by a lot this year. Even when he has success, there's something unsettling about how he succeeds.
   25. Bunny Vincennes Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2774960)
Nice movement on strike 3 there.
   26. retro-shiite Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:52 PM (#2774961)
Awesome. Way to show me up, Kerry!
   27. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:52 PM (#2774962)
What a game for Lilly. 9 pitches, 9 strikes for Wood. Great to see.
   28. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:52 PM (#2774963)
Yeah, it's funny that in the blue jays thread, the author is lamenting the loss of Johnson. It's tough to know what they miss more, the sub-300 SLG or his balls-to-the-wall willingness to play a single into a triple.
   29. Bunny Vincennes Posted: May 09, 2008 at 04:53 PM (#2774964)
Nicely nailed down.

Pie started every game in Cincy.

These chatters are seriously missing kerru and sabto.
   32. Sweet Posted: May 09, 2008 at 05:03 PM (#2774973)
Third-best start of the year by a Cubs pitcher by Game Score (75), behind Dempster's one-hit outing in April (78) and Zambrano's latest start (76).
