I'm calling it: dueling no-hitters thru 9!
   2. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2576467)
I have good feelings about John Maine's start, too, but a no-hitter's pushing it.

I don't know what you're talking about. The weather is gorgeous here in Queens.

And no, I won't be keeping this up; but for the moment, I'm at least entertaining myself.

I think they should have Charles Barkley in the booth tonight. Kick Gwynn out of there.

What, LeBron James wore a Yankee hat to a Yankees-Indians game? I almost think the NBA should fine him for that.

Seriously, Barkley's comments on the Rockies were better than Brenley, Gwynn and Caray combined.

Ok, what the hell is Charles Barkley doing there? Did they run out of retired baseball players to cover games?

?????

Just off the top of my head I can think of the 1985 Royals and the 1986 Mets.

Or did they just mean the NLCS?

Pffft. Man, what a break for the Rockies.

Brenly thinks that they need long innings with a lot going on in them to win. Jesus, that's innovative on a super-string level.
   42. Mbvlckd Posted: October 14, 2007 at 08:48 PM (#2576524)
Byrnes looked like a wind-up toy crashing into that wall.

The Rockies will never lose another game again.
   44. Greg K Posted: October 14, 2007 at 08:48 PM (#2576526)
Why did Byrnes run face first into the wall?
It's not like it was close to staying in
   45. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: October 14, 2007 at 08:52 PM (#2576527)
Dear Eric Byrnes: Pythagoras would like to talk to you about maybe how your team doesn't really score enough runs to win, Mr. we're-not-the-lucky-team. Now shut up.

Dear Lassus: common sense would like to talk to you about taking quotes out of context. When your team is scoring runs off of grounders that go foul and then bounce back fair and home run swings that end up with a ball trickling just past the pitcher for a hit, then it's safe to say that the breaks are going your way.

You know, Arizona has outhit the Rockies this series, they've just been clutchier I guess. But no, clutchiness isn't luck or anything. Of course not, that would be silly.
   46. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 08:55 PM (#2576530)
In my perhaps inferior brain, I do believe that complaining about luck and breaks - much like complaining about strikes and balls - makes you look incredibly weak. Like Kay actually saying that the Yankees were the better team after the Indians stomped them like bugs.

-makes "LAME" symbol with thumb and forefinger on head-
   47. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 08:58 PM (#2576533)
The wet grass is really going to help with taking extra bases on hits just like that. Smart running, there.

That stuff falling looks big and blotchy enough to be snow, not rain.
   49. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: October 14, 2007 at 08:59 PM (#2576535)
He wasn't really "complaining". He said that he believes that they've played better the last two games, but things just haven't gone their way. According to him, if they just continue playing to their same level, then things should even out in the end and they could pull these games out.

What's he supposed to say - "we're not as good as them and we have no chance to win"? They've hit and pitched better than the Rockies in the abstract, now they just need to do it in the right situations.

Shouldn't he be lauded for thinking that the ability to hit or pitch with RISP positions is a skill?
   50. Dan Evensen Posted: October 14, 2007 at 08:59 PM (#2576536)
Hit right between first and second. Double play. Nice call, Tony
   51. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:00 PM (#2576538)
OH MY GOD Troy you rock. That was a super-sweet move.
   52. Dan Evensen Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:01 PM (#2576542)
Troy is the white Ozzie Smith.
   53. Greg K Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:03 PM (#2576547)
Yeah I don't quite get the Byrnes hate over the quote

I mean, I made fun cause I think it's funny that Byrnes was the one who had a bad break go against him in the 1st. But how is what he said different from "we just have to keep doing what we're doing and we think we can win"?
   54. Swedish Chef Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:03 PM (#2576548)
Well, there's luck and then there's divine intervention....
   55. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:05 PM (#2576549)
If Troy is the white Ozzie Smith, who's the black Troy Tulowitzki?
   56. AuntBea Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:05 PM (#2576550)
They've hit and pitched better than the Rockies in the abstract

Hasn't it been pretty even in the series "in the abstract"?
   57. Dan Evensen Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:05 PM (#2576551)
How about those 1916 Giants?
   58. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:06 PM (#2576554)
In my perhaps inferior brain, I do believe that complaining about luck and breaks - much like complaining about strikes and balls - makes you look incredibly weak. Like Kay actually saying that the Yankees were the better team after the Indians stomped them like bugs.

And I do agree with this to an extent, but there's a difference between saying these sort of thing after a series and then during a series.

If Byrnes says something like "I think we were still the better team" after the series than I would think less of him for it. At that point, it's just sour grapes. But when there's games to be played, you have to have that confidence and conviction in yourself and your team that you're still capable of going out there and rattling off four wins in a row.

Miguel Montero jumps onto his bicycle and heads to the next zip code to try and break up Tulo.
   61. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:08 PM (#2576558)
How about "We've come up against a good team, and they've played great and beaten us. We do think we're a better team than them overall and that we'll end up winning."

It's the definite implication that they SHOULD have won IF ONLY things happened they way they were supposed to and the better team - which we are - would just win like we're supposed to. I just find that weak. I hate it when my team does it, and I like it even less when a team that isn't mine doesn't.
   62. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:09 PM (#2576559)
You're also right, it isn't that big a deal. I find Byrnes a little annoying in general, for absolutely no reason at all anyhow.

Your point from 58 is taken, and a good one. I don't mean to be ######. ;-)
   63. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:10 PM (#2576560)

Hasn't it been pretty even in the series "in the abstract"?

First two games:

Rockies - .211/.313/.225
Diamondbacks - .247/.329/.301

AZ had two GIDP and Col has one.

Colorado has just been able to get the hits in the right situations. It's not a huge difference, but there's still a lot there to give Arizona hope for winning this series.
   64. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:10 PM (#2576561)
b i t c h y, that is.
   65. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:11 PM (#2576563)
Let's just all agree to hate the broadcast team instead.
   66. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:13 PM (#2576565)
The gravel for the Rockies baseball team is Pro-Choice?

That's gonna be a problem.
   67. AuntBea Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:13 PM (#2576566)

Colorado has just been able to get the hits in the right situations.

Actually I think it's mostly the inverse... Arizona just hasn't been able to get the hits in the right situations.

but there's still a lot there to give Arizona hope for winning this series.

What happens in a short series isn't very indicative of the relative quality of the teams. Of course Arizona can win. Or they can lose too.
   68. Swedish Chef Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:17 PM (#2576572)
If this continues, Jesus has to be the favorite for series MVP.

I would like to take this moment to say that I've always loved Josh Fogg's name. I just wish he were a total lights-out pitcher, too, with that great name.
   71. AuntBea Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:21 PM (#2576578)
Livan looking good again.
   72. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:22 PM (#2576579)
Ouch, Livan. Bad.
   73. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:23 PM (#2576580)

   74. Dan Evensen Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:23 PM (#2576581)
Good call at third.
   75. AuntBea Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:23 PM (#2576582)
Was that the right play for Livan? Crazy risky and they barely got the out.
   76. Bowling Baseball Fan Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:23 PM (#2576583)
73,74 - yes and yes.
   77. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:25 PM (#2576584)
Well, for a player who trusts his athletic ability, I think it is the right play. And Livan does. It was a great pickup and throw.

If it's a Boston/Colorado world series, it's going to be like a fight to the death for the most frigid climate in which to hold baseball games in October.

If it's a Boston/Colorado world series, it's going to be like a fight to the death for the most frigid climate in which to hold baseball games in October.

Woah... Cleveland-Colorado would make that look darn right sunny.

Kurt Cobain is spinning in his urn . . .

Didn't the '98 Yankees go undefeated in the playoffs?
   86. Dan Evensen Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:32 PM (#2576597)
Hate to say this, but Byrnes got unlucky again.
   87. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:35 PM (#2576599)
I thought the '98 Yanks lost one game during the playoffs...
   88. Lassus Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:36 PM (#2576600)
Errrr.... I think you mean Eddie Vedder, Gold Star. Only he's not dead. ;-)

   93. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:39 PM (#2576606)
Just checked, unless if I read B-ref's postseason page wrong, the last team to go undefeated in the Playoffs was the '76 Reds... and back then, remember, it was only 2 rounds (CS and WS)
   94. Bull Pain Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:40 PM (#2576607)
one of those '98 Yanks losses was the famed Chuck Knoblauch, non-runner interference game.
   95. Dan Evensen Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:40 PM (#2576608)
Before the '76 Reds, you'd have to go back to the days before the LCS to find another team undefeated in the Playoffs. '66 Orioles, right?
   96. Bowling Baseball Fan Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:41 PM (#2576609)
Best 3 round records appear to be the 05 White Sox and 99 Yanks. Both 11-1.
   97. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:44 PM (#2576612)
'66 Orioles, right?

Think so, but I don't have BR up anymore.
   98. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:45 PM (#2576613)
Only he's not dead. ;-)

That's why he's spinning!
   99. Dan Evensen Posted: October 14, 2007 at 09:45 PM (#2576614)
Yeah, that's just off of my head. I know that no team swept the World Series between '69 and '76 -- the last sweep was the '66 Orioles. Before then it's '61 Yankees, '54 Giants... '50 Yankees? Can't remember.
