Reyes could use a good game tonight. I think he was pretty good in his stint in Richmond these past few weeks, and I would verify that if it were more convenient to access minor league game logs.

The Braves better not #### over this team again.
   3. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 03:30 PM (#2908609)
If the Mets can't win this series, I don't know what to think. Then again, the Cubs lost 2 of 3 to the Nationals earlier this year, so anything's possible, but the Braves look terrible.

From Newsday:

Billy Wagner was re-evaluated today at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery. He continues to have swelling and pain in his elbow. He will need additional rest before he can resume throwing.

This sounds like we're about two steps from shutting Wagner down for the season.

Step one: More rest.
Step two: More rest didn't work.
   5. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 04:30 PM (#2908675)
Yeah, that sounds awful.
   6. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2908836)
The Met starting rotation has an ERA+ of 107 and is pitching as well now than at any other point in the season. The Mets are second in the NL runs despite a hitter friendly park. If the bullpen were only average instead of an abject failure, the Mets would be competing with the Cubs for the best record in the NL.

Mets, this isn't the team that kicked your butt earlier in the season. Hudson and Smoltz aren't pitching and Teixeira is not in the lineup. Beat them.

If there's anything that could salvage the season in some way, the Braves making mincemeat of the Mets down the stretch to dash the Mets' playoff hopes would do it. Let's see it happen.
   9. flournoy Posted: August 19, 2008 at 06:23 PM (#2908860)
Does Omar Infante really bat cleanup for this team?

Yes. Not all the time, but yes.
   10. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 06:53 PM (#2908885)
Even if the Braves sweep us this series, no matter how everyone here reacts, it's not going to dash our playoff hopes.

But nice try. :-)

I think he was pretty good in his stint in Richmond these past few weeks, and I would verify that if it were more convenient to access minor league game logs.

Well, it's not that hard to check at a glance how he did:

Jo Jo Was a Man Who Thought He Was at Richmond
   12. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 06:59 PM (#2908896)
If the bullpen were only average instead of an abject failure, the Mets would be competing with the Cubs for the best record in the NL.

The bullpen is Problem 1. The defense is Problem 2. As Dial's numbers show, the Mets have been a much inferior defensive team compared to the Phillies, and below-average at too many defensive positions this year.
   13. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:08 PM (#2908913)
Oh, and as if we needed more details on Wagner's dire situation . . . .

They're not even trying to sugar coat it any more. They admit there could be structural damage to the elbow, but they won't know until the swelling subsides. They discuss candidly the real possibility his season could be done. It ain't good.
   14. Alan S Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:13 PM (#2908921)
Strikes, please.
   15. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2908922)
Ollie looks bad right now.
   16. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2908927)
We'll get by. And win the division. Because with Wagner out, we've completely lost favored status, if we haven't already. And we'll need that.
   17. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2908928)
He seems to be starting to throw strikes . . . to Chipper. Which can be dangerous.
   18. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2908929)
Bobby Cox is the dumbest manager is baseball.
   19. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2908931)
Come on, Ollie, get it together here.
   20. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2908932)
And of course, now he walks him. Oy.
   21. Alan S Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2908933)
Batting 4th, O. Infante, LF

Despite the rarity of that name and knowing that Omar Infante was in fact a Brave now, when I saw that he was batting 4th and playing left, my first thought was that it was someone other than the former Tigers middle infielder.
   22. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:18 PM (#2908939)
Thank you, Fake Omar.
   23. Alan S Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2908943)
Bad control so far, but his stuff looks even more ridiculous than usual tonight, if that's possible.
   24. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:21 PM (#2908946)
That was ultimately successful, but a lot o' pitches to get there.
   25. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:21 PM (#2908947)
I never really worry about Ollie as long as he is throwing hard.
   26. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2908953)
What's up with Murphy? Are we seeing him less lately? Odd.
   27. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2908958)
No, not banged up, Keith, just a platoon with Kelly Johnson, whose hitting lefties .330
   28. Alan S Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2908960)
Just more games against LHPs the past few days. I'm quite sure Murphy will be getting the majority of the at bats going forward.
   29. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:26 PM (#2908961)
Walking Reyes, and then falling behind Evans with Wright on deck, has to be making Bobby Cox completely & totally nuts.
   30. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2908968)
LOL Keith's great, he really doesn't think before he talks. "The little guys doing great, I mean YOUNG guys, not little guys...."
   31. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2908969)
Evans is a lefty masher.
   32. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2908971)
A hit would have been better, but that's at least a start.
   33. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2908972)
By the way, speaking of Murphy, the "Best Tools" issue of BA came yesterday. The "Best Hitting Prospect" in the Eastern League?

Daniel Murphy.

And there are some serious hitting prospects in that league who were eligible, I might add.

That'll do, DW.
   34. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2908973)
Johnson has been a disappointment this season. He was a middle class man's Utley last year.
   35. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2908974)
Walking Reyes, and then falling behind Evans with Wright on deck, has to be making Bobby Cox completely & totally nuts.

O, don't worry, Bobby is already way off his rocker.
   36. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2908975)
OK Carlos D., let's break that cooling down with some heating up here.
   37. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2908981)
Well, we already knew he was a streaky hitter, but a little consistency playing could be useful.
   38. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2908984)
By the way, speaking of Murphy, the "Best Tools" issue of BA came yesterday. The "Best Hitting Prospect" in the Eastern League?

Wow. He is already very polished but that's quite the compliment.
   39. Alan S Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2908989)
Fernando Tatis just keeps looking better.
   40. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2908991)
Blah, bad luck there. Beltran scores easily on that.
   41. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2908992)
Wow. He is already very polished but that's quite the compliment.

Yup. Ahead of (among others) the Blue Jays' Travis Snider (who was rated "Best Power"), who is BA's # 10 overall prospect in all of minor league baseball.

Evans was rated "Best Defensive First Baseman," by the way.
   42. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2909007)
Oh, come on Frenchy. Don't you dare complain. That was strike three.
   43. Alan S Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2909013)
Well, Sam, if Jeff Francouer doesn't think a pitch is a good one to hit, I'd be inclined to agree with him that it's probably not a strike.

If Endy is playing right, I assume that ball is caught in stride.
   44. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2909014)
Francoeur can complain all he wants, but he is so terrible
   45. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:42 PM (#2909015)
Well, Sam, if Jeff Francouer doesn't think a pitch is a good one to hit, I'd be inclined to agree with him that it's probably not a strike.

That's one way to look at it. My view is that he has absolutely no clue as to the strike zone, one way or the other, so he should just take the umpire's word for it.

If you're gonna give up triples, give 'em up with two outs and the pitcher on deck.
   46. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2909020)

Evans was rated "Best Defensive First Baseman," by the way.

That has to make him a pretty good prospect. If he is good defensively, a 22-year old firstbaseman with a .926 OPS in AAA has to be considered a good prospect especially since he also hit the year before in the FSL.
   47. Chris Dial Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2909037)
That 3-1 pitch to Reyes wasn't a strike at all.
   48. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2909040)
JoJo has good velocity but bad control and no movement.
   49. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2909051)
Come on, Ollie.
   50. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:57 PM (#2909059)
Other Mets' prospects who got "Best Tools" mention:

New Orleans: Crickets chirping . . . .
Binghamton: No others -- Murphy & Evans, as mentioned.
St. Lucie: Ezequiel Carrera (Best Defensive Outfielder)
Savannah: Maikel Cleto (Best Fastball)

They didn't do the short-season leagues.
   51. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:57 PM (#2909061)
Well, this is bad. Chipper up with two on and nobody out.
   52. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2909062)
How can you walk Blanco twice in a row? Ugh.
   53. Alan S Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2909063)
Stop it, Oliver.
   54. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2909069)
How can you walk Blanco twice in a row? Ugh.

Because he's got a great eye. His OBP is .370 while hitting .260.
   55. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2909070)
Well this is really bad.
   56. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2909071)
What a bunch of nothing hits destroying us.
   57. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2909073)
Because he's got a great eye.

Which is great if the pitcher doesn't throw strikes. Which Ollie didn't. Or even come close. If he throws strikes, as a LHP, he gets Blanco out.
   58. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2909074)
Ok, just get out of this inning without giving up the 4th run.
   59. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2909075)
as a LHP

Right you are and Blanco's splits against LHP are terrible, which makes it that much worse for Perez.
   60. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2909090)
Well, that was a crap inning.
   61. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2909100)
Ollie doesn't have it tonight. It's OK. He is due for a bad one.
   62. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2909107)
Beautiful DP!!!! Aggressive defense pays off.
   63. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2909113)
4-1 Nats, btw.
   64. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2909114)
Evans nearly overran that one.
   65. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2909123)
How about a blast, Castro?
   66. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2909126)
4-2 Nats.
   67. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2909133)
I think Ollie has 4 outs on his last 3 pitches.
   68. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2909151)
I think Ollie has 4 outs on his last 3 pitches.

That's what you get when you play the Braves, and Francoeur didn't have an ab
   69. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2909154)
Thank you, Keith. Remind them that you CAN bring up kid pitchers and win. You have to be lucky, of course . . . .
   70. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2909163)
Lineup rather chilly tonight.
   71. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2909186)
Ha ha Gary said "erection".
   72. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2909198)
OK, we definitely need Ollie to come back out for the 7th inning.
   73. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2909231)
This has been a terrible performance by the line-up. First they forgot to force this guy to throw strikes, and then they let him settle in to the point where he started to do so. Ugh.
   74. Chris Dial Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2909232)
I complained I had Luis Castillo, until I had Damion Easley.
   75. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2909234)
The Mets don't look like they are scoring again tonight.
   76. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2909246)
One out triples. Bad.
   77. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2909249)
The Braves always play the Mets tough. It doesn't matter how much they suck against everyone else.
   78. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2909252)
I don't like this move. I'd keep Ollie in against Infante and McCann.
   79. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2909262)
You have to brush back the dangerous clean-up sluggers like Infante.
   80. Joshemy Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2909263)
Welcome to the playoff race, Luis. Now get the DP!
   81. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2909267)
Ayala is certainly throwing hard . . . .
   82. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2909272)
Now what do you do w/ McCann? Walk him?
   83. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2909274)
McCann is going to get this run in.
   84. Barry Gibb Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2909278)
Now they will...
   85. Chris Dial Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2909280)
Jeebus., Just bring in Schoeneweis.
   86. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2909282)
Go the #### after him, I say.
   87. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2909286)
DAMN, I'm smarter than Ron Darling!
   88. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2909287)
Don't bring in Schoeneweis. You can't keep burning through relievers. Walk McCann, and have Ayala take care of Francoeur.
   89. Joshemy Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2909288)
2 outs in, I'm cool with Luis Ayala.
   90. Sam M. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2909290)
Or that'll work, too. Wow.
   91. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2909292)
Ayala is certainly throwing as hard as he was earlier in his career when had more success.
   92. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2909297)
The Nats have blown their lead.
   93. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2909310)
Jo Jo had lost 5 in a row before tonight? I didn't realize that, that's bad odds for us.
   94. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2909311)
What do you with Ayala if Castro gets on? If he doesn't?
   95. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2909313)
This guy's zone seems kinda big.
   96. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2909317)
Damn that sucked.
   97. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2909343)
5-4 Phils.
   98. Chris Dial Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2909346)
THROW A ####### CURVEBALL
   99. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2909349)
Gosh, Heilman. How dumb is that?
   100. Joshemy Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2909351)
Well that's awesome.

Bring in Show.
