Looking forward to, say, June 1, I don't think I'm going to like the composition of the pitching staff. The returning Federation of Brittle, Aged Relievers (BARF) is going to squeeze out anyone with options.

Denorfia out again. What's he done to infuriate the brass?
   4. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2769988)
S'pose he doesn't run to first fast enough while making outs.

Bring back the '68 throwbacks.
   6. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:07 PM (#2770087)
So that we might burn them.
   7. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2770102)
I liked them. I became an A's fan in 1973 mostly because of the green and gold. I also liked Reggie and Vida.
   8. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2770106)
I decided to watch the Ducks and Royals as my secondary game instead of Scherzer, whom I'll save for tomorrow morning, because I knew I couldn't trust Kuiper not to open his trap and spoil it for me. And he didn't disappoint, waiting until all of two pitches had been thrown before heading to update city.
   9. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2770109)
I learned my lesson after deciding to watch Haren-Santana yesterday.
   10. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2770113)
Every day Buck plays center in Sacramento, I get a little closer to convincing myself they might actually give that a go with the big club. Single and two walks today, by the way.
   11. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2770114)
Did Kuiper ruin Dan-Johan for you?
   12. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2770138)
It'd be nice to have a Buck who can play center capably.

It'd also be nice to have the Buck who could hit back, too.
   13. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2770179)
Four strikes and he still struck out
   14. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2770181)
Is Buck capable of playing a decent CF?

Also, I'm not a fan of the platoon at 1B.
   15. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2770182)
Did Kuiper ruin Dan-Johan for you?

No, I decided to watch that live, and then he constantly updated Baltimore-Anaheim, which I'd planned to watch last night. Since he blabs about Anaheim the most, I'll be watching live from now on and hoping that he keeps his mouth shut about everything else.
   16. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2770183)
Is Buck capable of playing a decent CF?

Don't really know. They moved him over from right last August, and he immediately got hurt and didn't play again.
   17. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2770184)
Nobody knows if Buck can play CF. He's never done it in the majors nor minors till the past week.
   18. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2770185)
Eveland's looking pretty solid so far.
   19. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2770191)
Oops, Buck did play there a little last year as GMSoRP says.
   20. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2770193)
Is Donnie Murphy completely incapable of hitting right handers? I wouldn't mind seeing him get some more consistent playing time.
   21. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:52 PM (#2770195)
You're not satisfied with Hannahan's body of work?
   22. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:55 PM (#2770200)
An OF of Cust-Buck-Brown would rival Grieve-Long-Stairs/Jeremy/Piatt defensively though.
   23. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:56 PM (#2770204)
I like Hannahan, but I generally think he is what he is. Murphy's still young enough and has enough power that I'm curious to see what he could develop into.
   24. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 10:57 PM (#2770206)
The zone's enormous to the point of absurdity.
   25. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:01 PM (#2770213)
Do people commonly think that Eck's MVP year was the year with the 0.61 ERA?
   26. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:03 PM (#2770216)
Maybe if they weren't alive or fans then
   27. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:04 PM (#2770218)
Or color commentators, apparently.
   28. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:06 PM (#2770223)
Well I'm 20, and I couldn't have told you what year Eck's MVP was. I just generally know that he won one, and I kind of group that dominant stretch of 88-92 together when I think of his career. That 1990 is ridiculous though. 606 ERA+. Man.
   29. DKDC Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2770252)
Eveland's looking pretty solid so far

Don't be decieved, this is a potently bad lineup.

I suppose I should have similar concerns about Olson looking good.
   30. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:21 PM (#2770257)
I'd rather have Jones or Markakis than anyone in the A's lineup
   31. DKDC Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:30 PM (#2770271)
I'd rather have Jones or Markakis than anyone in the A's lineup

There are a couple bright spots, but it gets pretty ugly after that.

I'd rather have anyone in the Rockhounds lineup than Luis Hernandez.

Woo stolen internet while I move! Are we winning! What's going on? I'll check back the next time I can steal wireless...if this post goes through, that is...
   33. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:33 PM (#2770284)
In '90, Rickey was far and away the best player in the league and deservedly won, Fielder hit 50 home runs, Clemens had his best season to date, people voted for Kelly Gruber as a lark and Thigpen saved 57 games, so Eck's 0.61 was only good for sixth. In '92, the A's won the division without any other standout performances -- McGwire was the second-best hitter in the league, but with a low average a missed time -- and the guy who would've been the obvious choice, Thomas, played for a third place team. So Eck won with a run-of-the-mill great relief season.

I never actually pondered those dynamics before.

Chasm's future platoon partner!
   35. DKDC Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:34 PM (#2770290)
The O's have never met an inning they can't run themselves out of.
   36. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:38 PM (#2770297)
The 2-1 to Ellis was a million times better than about half the strikes called in this game.
   37. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:40 PM (#2770301)
Is Garret Olson this good or is our offense really that bad? I'm inclined to think the latter.
   38. DKDC Posted: May 05, 2008 at 11:43 PM (#2770309)
Olson's pretty good, the strike zone is pretty big, and your offense is pretty bad.

Spread the blame/credit around.

Emil Brown with more of that Emil Brown baserunning.
   40. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:00 AM (#2770346)
Emil Brown is a horrible baserunner.
   41. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:01 AM (#2770349)
Geren's the only one who didn't see that coming.
   42. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:08 AM (#2770357)
Hahaha. Rajai!
   43. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:08 AM (#2770358)
Back to back infield hits, kind of an odd way to take the lead.
   44. DKDC Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:09 AM (#2770359)
Stupid west coast games.

At least have the courtesy to blow the game like a bunch of idiots before midnight.
   45. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:14 AM (#2770367)
Whither Jairo?
   46. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:18 AM (#2770370)
I think there's an informal policy of not pitching anybody three days in a row.
   47. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:20 AM (#2770373)
Didn't Foulke, Casilla and Embree pitch like 8 times in the first 11 games?
   48. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:21 AM (#2770374)
Anyone else watching on MLB.tv lose the audio feed last inning?
   49. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:21 AM (#2770375)
I have audio now and picture.
   50. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:22 AM (#2770376)
There were a bunch of days off the first eleven games. I can only find one instance of a reliever working three days in a row -- Jairo on the Toronto-Cleveland swing.

Don't throw the ball straight into the ground next time.
   53. DKDC Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:28 AM (#2770383)
Seriously Brian, stop pretending you're a switch hitter.

You're not fooling anyone.
   54. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:29 AM (#2770384)
Ahhhhh.
   55. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:31 AM (#2770388)
Whew
   56. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:31 AM (#2770389)
Ahh, the original Chadwick.
   57. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:41 AM (#2770394)
Where's the huge zone go?
   58. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:41 AM (#2770396)
Ruh roh.
   59. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:43 AM (#2770399)
Dear Huston,

Please stop this.
   60. DKDC Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:47 AM (#2770404)
Game ending GIDP.

I'd stake my life savings on it.
   61. jonathan (Joseph HannaCust) Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:50 AM (#2770409)
Where's your cajones, Bobby?
   62. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:51 AM (#2770411)
DKDC's accountant just breathed a sigh of relief
   63. DKDC Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:52 AM (#2770412)
It could still happen.

And I didn't specify which game.
   64. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:55 AM (#2770414)
That was an absurd roll.
   65. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 12:59 AM (#2770416)
#### you, Brian Roberts.
   66. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:08 AM (#2770421)
This must be pretty late for all you fans in Baltimore
   67. DKDC Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:10 AM (#2770423)
Yep, tomorrow will be rough, I really should just go to bed.

Olson had a really good start, which is enough to make this a good day for the Orioles. In the unlikely event they win this, that's just a bonus.
   68. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:16 AM (#2770428)
I don't know, if I were an O's fan, I might be rooting for the team to lose games but get good perfomance from young guys. I mean honestly, if this team is still in spitting distance of the WC, Angelos might call for some short-term moves to "contend this year". I'd be afraid of that.
   69. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:16 AM (#2770429)
Huzzah!
   70. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:16 AM (#2770432)
Emil!

Yea. A win.
   71. Danny Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:17 AM (#2770433)
Clutch God.
   72. DKDC Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:17 AM (#2770434)
Yep, my instincts were right.

I don't think any fan should ever root for his team to lose. In the Orioles case, there's not much point since they're bound to lose a lot of games sooner or later.
   73. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Guangzhou Posted: May 06, 2008 at 01:17 AM (#2770435)
I've never rooted for the A's to lose. I don't see how I'd be able to.
