0-2,RISP, crappy hitter AB...base knock time!
   8. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:16 PM (#2854865)
Shockingly, Cleveland has scored a run off of Kazmir in the 3rd inning, and they still have runners on the corners with 1 out. TB leads 2-1.
   9. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:17 PM (#2854867)
And Toronto leads 4-0 over the Yankees.

2-2 in Cleveland, Peralta hit a sac fly.

Dancin' Dice.

I have to say I like Casey and Moss being in the lineup lately instead of Crisp.

97 games into the season.
   16. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:40 PM (#2854896)
Drew was fooled badly on that slider
   17. tfbg9 Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:43 PM (#2854900)
The 3-1, Dan?
   18. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:47 PM (#2854904)
Yeah
   19. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:47 PM (#2854905)
Not impressed by Lowell's AB after going up 3-0 either.
   20. tfbg9 Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2854908)
YOUKS!
   21. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:53 PM (#2854909)
Catches like that make me think Youkilis would do alright in the OF.
   22. tfbg9 Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:55 PM (#2854911)
Later chump. I can't stand Payton.
   23. tfbg9 Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:56 PM (#2854912)

4-2 Cleveland!
   25. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 02:58 PM (#2854915)
Daisuke's breaking ball is looking good today.
   26. tfbg9 Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2854917)
Daisuke Matsuzaka: a rich man's Jaret Wright?
   27. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2854918)

   28. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2854919)
Tampa turning back into a pumpkin?
   29. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2854920)
Also:

Casey is the slowest guy I can recall this side of Bengie Molina.
   30. tfbg9 Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:04 PM (#2854924)
Maybe.
Maybe.
Maybe. To all 3.
   31. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:09 PM (#2854930)
I don't think Tampa is really turning into a pumpkin, but they were due for some regression. They have a good team, but not a 95+ win team. I expect them to end up around 90 wins.
   32. tfbg9 Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:12 PM (#2854933)
Cabrera and Pedroia have a history.
   33. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:14 PM (#2854935)
I don't tihnk Cabrera has a ####### clue where the strike zone is. He ####### about pitches that aren't really debatable calls.
   34. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:15 PM (#2854936)
I would love to see Drew get a big hit here and see Cabrera come undone.
   35. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:22 PM (#2854945)
Cabrera at 94 pitches, Dice-K at 76.
Somebody's nibbling more than Dice? Hard to believe
   36. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:22 PM (#2854946)
Tampa is like us. Insane at home, weak on the road.
   37. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:22 PM (#2854947)
Ellsbury!!!
   38. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:23 PM (#2854948)
Ellsbury!
   39. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:24 PM (#2854950)
Cabrera's not nibbling, he's just plain wild. There's a difference.
   40. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:24 PM (#2854951)
Cabrera doesn't nibble. He just has no idea where the ball is going to go when he lets it go.
   41. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:24 PM (#2854953)
You're a jerk, Biff.
   42. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:25 PM (#2854954)
Showing up in chatter just in time to steal my line like that.
   43. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:25 PM (#2854956)
Matsuzaka is the best 5 inning pitcher in the game
   44. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:26 PM (#2854958)
Showing up in chatter just in time to steal my line like that.

I do what I can.

Andy Marte HRed for Cleveland. Boy, did he flame out.
   45. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:30 PM (#2854960)
Andy Marte HRed for Cleveland. Boy, did he flame out.

Atlanta prospects lose their mojo if they are traded away.
It probably a tribute to how great the Braves player development is.

Time for Farrell to work his magic
   46. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:31 PM (#2854961)
Marte flamed out, but Shoppach is doing well for the Indians.
   47. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:33 PM (#2854962)
####### Daisuke.
   48. PJ Martinez Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:33 PM (#2854965)
What is Atlanta's total haul from that Marte for Renteria deal at this point?
   49. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:34 PM (#2854966)
Shoppach is doing well for the Indians.

Shoppach is okay, but we got the better young catcher in the deal - Josh Bard.
   50. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:35 PM (#2854971)
Dice-K deserves a gold glove
   51. Curse of the Graffanino (dfan) Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:35 PM (#2854972)
I don't remember the last time people hated a starting pitcher with a 2.68 ERA this much.
   52. PJ Martinez Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:36 PM (#2854973)
I'd rather have Shoppach this year, though-- plus he's younger.
   53. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:36 PM (#2854974)
A couple good years from Renteria, and a starting pitcher in the top 10 in ERA in the NL (Jair Jurrjens). They've also gotten 110 ABs of 106 OPS+ from Infante.
   54. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:37 PM (#2854976)
I don't remember the last time people hated a starting pitcher with a 2.68 ERA this much.

The ERA is insanely deceptive. It's only a matter of time before it rises. You just can't walk that many batters and continue to be this successful ERA-wise.
   55. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:38 PM (#2854979)
Shoppach is a solid catcher, and probably a good starting catcher honestly. He'd be great to have now to take over for Varitek. He's solid to good defensively, and last year had an OPS+ of 101 and has an OPS+ of 99 so far this year. His BA/OBP are weak, but he hits for power.
   56. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:39 PM (#2854980)
Wasn't Marte involved in the Mitchell Report or some other steroids investigation?

I think Atlanta and Boston both knew and moved him to somebody who didn't. Funny that BPro picked him the best prospect in all of baseball one year.
   57. PJ Martinez Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:39 PM (#2854981)
I don't remember the last time people hated a starting pitcher with a 2.68 ERA this much.

A Mets fan I know expressed surprise Matsuzaka wasn't on the All-Star team. I almost did a double-take. Then I thought about it for a minute, considered his stats, and realized that it wasn't a crazy idea (not that I think he should be on the team-- just that it wouldn't seem crazy to someone who wasn't following the team obsessively).
   58. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:40 PM (#2854983)
I don't remember the last time people hated a starting pitcher with a 2.68 ERA this much.

His popularity was over when he bombed Pearl Harbor
   59. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:40 PM (#2854984)
I don't hate Daisuke. But I get annoyed watching him pitch, and I think it's the same with everyone else. He has great stuff and all kinds of potential, but he nibbles and randomly completely loses the strike zone (like the 5th inning).
   60. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:40 PM (#2854985)
The ERA is insanely deceptive. It's only a matter of time before it rises. You just can't walk that many batters and continue to be this successful ERA-wise.

Ryan managed it, Biff. Of course, Ryan also pitched complete games.

Dice avoids contact at all costs. So his own stats look OK but he puts extra pressure on the pen.
   61. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:41 PM (#2854987)
Funny that BPro picked him the best prospect in all of baseball one year.

BA was really high on him too, they had him 5-10 range.
Just shows you how volatile prospect stocks are
   62. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:42 PM (#2854991)
Dice' superficial stats look awesome. It's only when you watch him all the time do you see his flaws.

What I don't get is his amazing ability to pitch out of all the jams he gets himself in. So, if he can pitch that well with men on base, why can't he do when there aren't any on? he could save himself a whole lot of trouble.
   63. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:43 PM (#2854992)
Nice baserunning by Youkilis. He makes a lot of heads up plays on the bases, especially for someone so slow.
   64. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:43 PM (#2854993)
Cabrera is a pinhead. He didn't cover home
   65. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:46 PM (#2854997)
Sean Casey's statistics are pretty amazing. Every year, the only thing you need to know about him is his BA.
His OBP is always 60 points higher and his SLG is always a 100-110 points higher than his BA.
   66. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:47 PM (#2855000)
Varitek against Sarfate's fastball is pathetic.
   67. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:49 PM (#2855003)
Wow. Sarfate is wild as a hawk. 35 walks in 40 innings.
   68. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:49 PM (#2855004)
This game is going epically slow for a 2-0 game.
   69. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:49 PM (#2855005)
Varitek against Sarfate's fastball is pathetic.

After a particularly bad game earlier in the year, Tek tried to commit seppuku, but his catching gear got in the way.
True story
   70. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:51 PM (#2855008)
Tampa only scored 2 runs off of Sowers in 4 innings despite SEVEN walks.
   71. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:51 PM (#2855009)
Electric stuff, though.
   72. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:52 PM (#2855011)
####!!
   73. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:52 PM (#2855012)
Payton robs Ellsbury of a hit.
That shoe is on the other foot now
   74. Curse of the Graffanino (dfan) Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:53 PM (#2855014)
How many LOB is that through five?
   75. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:53 PM (#2855015)
11.
   76. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:55 PM (#2855019)
And the Orioles have 8.
   77. Curse of the Graffanino (dfan) Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:55 PM (#2855020)
All right, 9 more in the next four innings will tie the record.
   78. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:57 PM (#2855025)
What's the record for combined men LOB between both teams in a 9 inning game?
   79. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:02 PM (#2855036)
Tampa and New York both in the books now with losses. Red Sox and Tampa Bay are tied in the East now, pending the result of this game.
   80. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:04 PM (#2855041)
It would really be something if Matsuzaka ended up with 20+ wins and an ERA around where it is now. Would he be in CY consideration, even with all the walks and the low innings total?
   81. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:05 PM (#2855042)
Bunt Liner by Pedroia!
   82. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:06 PM (#2855044)
Damn, Drew hit that ball hard. Jones did very well to get to that.
   83. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:07 PM (#2855045)
A good CF makes at least one highlight catch a game
   84. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:11 PM (#2855052)
Nice play by Lowrie on that.
   85. ekogan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:11 PM (#2855053)
Nice play by Lowrie.

Would he be in CY consideration, even with all the walks and the low innings total?

Not if Halladay keeps it up. But I guess it depends what you mean by "consideration" (i.e., will people mention him in the conversation, or will he actually get a significant number of votes, etc).
   88. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:12 PM (#2855058)

Well yeah, obviously if Halladay keeps up his numbers to date for the rest of the year, he's likely to walk to the CY. But I did really just mean if he would finish in the top 3-5 in voting.
   91. Dan Posted: July 13, 2008 at 04:14 PM (#2855062)
STRIKES OKAJIMA
