Wells is scratched. JULIAN TAVAREZ is tonight's starter.

Surely, THIS is rock bottom.

Please?

1. Coco Crisp (CF)
2. Alex Cora (SS)
3. Mark Loretta (DH)
4. Kevin Youkilis (LF)
5. Mike Lowell (3B)
6. Eric Hinske (RF)
7. Javy Lopez ©
8. Carlos Pena (1B)
9. Dustin Pedroia (2B)
SP - Julian Tavarez

Yeah, that's rock bottom, I think. This should be good practice, though, for Julian's role next year as a mop-up/emergency-start guy (granted, he may have to battle it out in ST for that role along with Matt Clement).

LET'S GO RED SOX
   4. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:09 PM (#2163881)
Reed Johnson is having a comically good year at the bat.
   5. Lefty, Monty, And The Moose (Walewander) Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:14 PM (#2163884)
Tavarez?

Sorry we couldn't help you guys out this aft. The JeterZone TM was in full effect for all the Yankee hitters but Guiel.
   6. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:27 PM (#2163901)
Are Ortiz, Pena, and Ramirez all going to be on the bench, but not the DL, for so long that the Sox will regret not DLing them?
   7. Curse of the Graffanino (dfan) Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:31 PM (#2163903)
Ortiz and Pena are both supposed to be back in a couple of days. I dunno about Manny.

Good Lord. Mike Lowell?

Boston 3, Toronto 0.

That's pretty awesome. May GaTech have this much luck on Saturday.
   11. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:37 PM (#2163911)
Tavarez seems determined to make his start a brief one. Already at 26 pitches and three baserunners.
   12. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:39 PM (#2163913)
The Jays need to stop erasing leadoff baserunners with double plays. That's no way to win a ballgame.

How does one triple to left in Fenway? Did Crisp attempt something and fail?
   14. Lefty, Monty, And The Moose (Walewander) Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:45 PM (#2163916)
Got in one, rLr. Tried a diving catch.
It was more to centre than left.

If Johnny Mac isn't the worst-hitting position player in the majors, he's definitely on the short list.
   16. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:46 PM (#2163919)
Crisp loves to dive. I'm not sure how often it pays off for him.
   17. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:48 PM (#2163923)
I think Javy is playing himself into an NRI next spring.

rLr, how quickly you forget who hit 7th for Detroit today.

Wells deal official, for a PTBNL.

He batted 6th, Wale. It's too close to call if Neifi or Johnny Mac is worse. They're co-valedictorians. They make Kelly Stinnett look like Mik Piazza.
   22. Lefty, Monty, And The Moose (Walewander) Posted: August 31, 2006 at 07:54 PM (#2163934)
6th, right. Ugh. I don't know if we're gonna make it. Hope the Yanks help us out this weekend.

Santana isn't pitching. Radke got bumped for injury. I think my boys will give your boys a boost.

Normally, two walks and three extra base hits in 2 1/3 innings add up to more than one run.

Where'd the BoSox fans go?

Collective suicide watch. Either that or the Wells trade thread.

Tavarez has been getting lucky and he's still getting hammered.

I am Gamedaying, but it was evident by pitch location and hit location.

I love watching Halladay work.
   30. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 08:15 PM (#2163961)
Halladay goes by his middle name, which is Leroy. I'm into it.

Mark Loretta is having a Darin Erstad season. Nice batting average and nothing else. And he's even been playing first (and, God help us, DHing) lately.
   31. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 08:18 PM (#2163967)
This is not the Corey that got in trouble for smoking reefer, right?

Didn't Loretta used to walk?
Placido's value is mostly BA, but at least he's one of our only guys who has more of an idea than "close your eyes and swing."
Is this 3 guys going 3 IP each?

Busy with renovations to the bottle shop.

Bunting with Hinske is very dumb.

Agree, I was telling RB in an email in July that I think the Sox should have traded him as his value would never be higher. Still he was 'clutch' right??

:)
   38. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: August 31, 2006 at 08:37 PM (#2163992)
Does that count as two productive outs all at once?
   39. PJ Martinez Posted: August 31, 2006 at 08:37 PM (#2163993)
Wow. Lopez has been a disappointment. Not that it matters at this point.

Here's looking forward to the Age of Kottaras.

Bases loaded, nobody out. One run and they don't even clear the pitcher's spot.

Think he'll be brought up immediately? He prrobably should be. he can't be any worse than Lopez. Lopez is jut pathetic right now.

"Think he'll be brought up immediately?"

I'm not sure he'll even be on the Sox till after the season. Right?

The Jays shuld be hammering this chump.

His numbers are pretty decent, rLr, even if it's just a small sample size.

He's walked one in nine batters he's faced. That's not too good.

"He's walked one in nine batters he's faced. That's not too good."

For a reliever, that doesn't sound that bad. What's the gold standard?

Well, if he gives up a hit 30% of the time otherwise (not sure what usual BABIP is, but I think it's around there), he's got an opponent's OBP in the mid-high .300s.

Two 2-out triples for Toronto today. They scored the other one.

   53. Chip Posted: August 31, 2006 at 09:33 PM (#2164074)
That's a pretty ####### hilarious way for Cora to get his first HR of the year.

Pedroia hasn't exactly hit the ground running since landing in the majors.

More like the ground has hit him. His parachute failed to deploy.

Timlin again? Tito has a death wish.

That's a UEFA spot right there.

Alex Cora homering: The gates to a frozen hell just opened.

Here comes Timlin to give the runs back.

####### timlin will find a way to #### this up
   57. Chip Posted: August 31, 2006 at 09:38 PM (#2164089)
Tito's knee-jerk move to Timlin here is going to fail, of course, so Rios' mistake will soon be forgotten.

Giving up the 1-2 line drive is just the start. I can't remember the last time he didn't give up hard contact to the outfield.

Btw, who out of these folks are we going ot see if somebody else gets hurt:

David McCarty
Lou Merloni
Brian Daubach
Kevin Millar
Cesar Crespo?

Pedroia must have heard me badmouth him.

Of course, another hard hit ball off Timlin.

Gregg Zaun has not had a good day at the bat.

Two DPs, a K, and a popout. Yuck.
   61. Chip Posted: August 31, 2006 at 10:04 PM (#2164126)
Ah yes, the up and away fastball on 0-2. Red Sox burned for the 5,347th time on it.

I think Frankie Cat is the only Long Islander I like. If Wells hits a homer, Jim Kaat will have a stroke from pleasure.

What was the win probability of a Halladay vs. Tavarez matchup, with no Manny, Ortiz, or Wily Mo? (Not to mention all the other missing parts.)

About the same as what most thought the Red Sox record would be in August
