Who the hell is David Pauley?

If Ted the Tease is Ted the Good tonight, the Jays may well get their first sweep of the season.

Of course, if Vernon treats Pauley as well as he does Beckett, it may not matter

Wily Mo had wrist surgery...4 to 6 weeks? ####

Correction-he is to have it done tomorrow.

6 weeks is a good guess, with the presumption that they will take his recovery slowly to ensure full healing. I had (actually, have) this problem stemming from a soccer injury a few years ago and it's never been right -- kills me most times I play golf.

Lilly has pretty much owned the Red Sox his last 5 or 6 starts. It's funny how he lives and dies by that curveball, but he always pitches his best against the Sox...Is Pauley a lefty or a righty?
   7. Hungry Hungry Hipolito Pichardo Posted: May 31, 2006 at 04:12 PM (#2045763)
Pauley's a righty. Blue Jays mash lefties, which made him a better risk then DiNardo, Alvarez, or Lester in the short run.

IIRC - Alvarez is ineligible for a recall anyway, as he was only optioned to AAA 8 or 9 days ago.

He could have come back up before ten days if he were replacing somebody who went to the DL.

I stand corrected -- I was mentally responding to someone who suggested recalling Mohr for Harris with Wily Mo out. Clearly, though, that wasn't here.

boston.com reports 6-8 weeks for Wily Mo. Mirabelli gets a start over Tek b/c of his 6 for 15, 3 homers history vs. Lilly. The Great Batting Order Watch takes a new twist, as Coco/Loretta slot 1/2, with Youk 5th behind Manny and ahead of Lowell. Still remains to be seen what Tito does vs. a righty. No real excitement from the Jays lineup -- unless you're waiting on the edge of your seat to see if Alfonso can crack the north side of .100 tonight. Tune in later.

Red Sox
1. Coco Crisp, CF
2. Mark Loretta, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
6. Mike Lowell, 3B
7. Doug Mirabelli, C
8. Trot Nixon, RF
9. Alex Gonzalez, SS
-- David Pauley, SP

Blue Jays
1. Frank Catalonatto, LF
2. Greg Zaun, C
3. Alex Rios, CF
4. Troy Glaus, DH
5. Lyle Overbay, 1B
6. Shea Hillenbrand, 3B
7. Eric Hinske, RF
8. Aaron Hill, SS
9. Edgar Alfonso, 2B

Amend the above: No Vernon Wells in the Jays lineup, a thorough disappointment for Sox fans anywhere. I suppose he just hasn't been doing enough lately to keep his starting job.

John "Way Back" Wasdin home run rate as a Red Sox: 1.43 hr/9.

Josh Beckett home run rate as a Red Sox: 1.83 hr/9.

This isn't anything against the Sox, I just enjoy seeing Josh Beckett get roughed up.
   13. Hungry Hungry Hipolito Pichardo Posted: May 31, 2006 at 05:55 PM (#2045882)
Josh Beckett home run rate as a Red Sox: 1.83 hr/9.

And it's 1.27 hr/9 against teams hailing from the Continental U.S. While admittedly still not great, the 7 HR in 19 IP vs. the Jays skews things a bit.

And no, I'm not trying to draw any conclusions from the above data point, but the difference between his Jays and non-Jays performances have been stark.

This just in...

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees and Major League Baseball announced today they planned to bring the greatest rivalry in sports on the road by playing one game out of each of the two remaining homestands against the Boston Red Sox to Pineapple Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
"This is a great thing," Yankee owner George Steinbrenner said through spokesman Howard J. Rubenstein. "We know the fans in the Bronx are the greatest in the world, but we really want to spread the passion and excitement of these games across the country."
Rubenstein added that he believed that though the specific games had not been scheduled yet, he thought they would likely coincide with the pitching timetable of Boston righthander Josh Beckett.
MLB Commissioner Allan H. "Bud" Selig said as long as he got to cash a big check and use the games to convince Oakland, Milwaukee, Miami, Boston and Chicago they needed new stadiums or their teams would be moved, he would be pleased. -- Associated Press

He's been pretty wild, but so far I like what Pauley's done, given the circumstances. Some seasoning in AAA after this and he may turn into a decent 4/5 guy. I didn't think he'd make it out of the first inning going into this game. His curveball looks pretty good and if he can command his fastball it looks like it has enough movement to be effective around 90.

Strike one is really important for a guy with his stuff, though. Starting 2-0 against these guys is hard to recover from when you don't have a pitch so good they couldn't hit it if they knew it was coming.
   65. tfbg9 Posted: May 31, 2006 at 08:08 PM (#2046160)
My least favorite part of tonight's game was the point where Pauley had walked two guys in a row on about 9 pitches, all fastballs and then went 1-0 to Hill (I think), and Mirabelli calls for a curve, and he hits him.

He shows promise. He has a couple pitches that could be effective if he commands them. It looks like a sharp curveball and a low-90's 2 seam fastball, but I don't have velocity readings on my mlb.tv broadcast. He has a changeup too, but I'm not sure I've seen one.
