I'll say this in advance:

No nibbling!
   2. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:06 PM (#2769703)
I think I would prefer Youkilis batting 5th and Lowell batting 6th.
   3. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2769706)
The look on Cabrera's face on that pop-up was "I hope I can catch this with this flipping mitt."
   4. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2769714)
Dammit, Orsillo, just because he doesn't make errors doesn't man he's good defensively.
   5. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2769717)
Of course, Daisuke is nibbling like crazy already. Argh.
   6. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2769718)
Dice-K is just maddening to watch.
   7. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2769721)
How the #### does he get the first two outs in like 5 pitches, and then still end up throwing 25 pitches in the inning? Jesus H. Christ.
   8. Mike Hampton's #1 Fan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2769723)
Does he not trust his stuff, does his control just suck, or is he under the impression that this is actually an effective way to pitch? He seems like the kind of guy who could derive huge benefit from a sports psychologist.
   9. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2769724)
He needs to start the pitches in the strike zone and let them tail out. He starts them outside the zone and then they break way out.
   10. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2769728)
I think I said it before, but I think in Japan he got the Glavine-Maddux strike zone on outside pitches, and he doesn't get it here.
   11. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2769729)
Hey, Manny didn't miss a fat pitch and foul it back. Good sign.
   12. Mike Hampton's #1 Fan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2769730)
I love Manny. I'll miss him when he goes somewhere else.
   13. Mike Hampton's #1 Fan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2769732)
Lowell decides not to suck tonight. Good sign.
   14. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:34 PM (#2769738)
DREW HIT A LINE DRIVE!
   15. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:36 PM (#2769739)
I think Manny will end up staying in Boston. I don't see a credible replacement.
   16. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2769742)
That Matt Joyce kid is lookin' good out there!
   17. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2769745)
It's kind of odd that Joyce is hitting 7th ahead of Renteria.
   18. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2769748)
2 run lead and you walk the guy up from AAA. Awesome.
   19. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2769749)
I'm on MLB.tv and that hasn't happened yet...
   20. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2769751)
Awful. Just awful. And on five pitches, with none of the balls even close.
   21. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2769752)
Walking Joyce? Way to go, dumbass.
   22. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2769757)
No, you idiots, he was leading off vs lefty pitchers, Leland wasn't just ####### around with lineups.
   23. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:51 PM (#2769760)
That was a pretty shitty pitch to swing at on 2-0.
   24. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:51 PM (#2769761)
There's the Renteria I remember!
   25. Mike Hampton's #1 Fan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2769764)
I don't like the lack of strikeouts. As long as Dice is striking out a batter an inning, I can live with the walks, but if he's not K'ing anybody, I get nervous. Granted, it's only two innings, but still.
   26. konaforever Posted: May 05, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2769765)
Typical Redsox pitching outing:

Starter - gives up 0-3 runs
Middle Relief - gives up 2-4 runs (1-2 runs coming from Lopez)
Okajima, Papelbon - 0 runs
   27. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2769773)
Spaceman sighting!
   28. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2769777)
STOP NIBBLING DICKJACK
   29. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2769778)
Four straight junk balls to Granderson, none near the zone. Did he even try a cut fastball? Let alone a four-seamer to, you know, get a ####### strike?
   30. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2769780)
His control even sucks throwing to second.
   31. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2769782)
Actually on replay the throw was better than I thought.
   32. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2769784)
Polanco helped him out chasing that 1-2 pitch.
   33. villageidiom Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2769790)
Just ducking in for a moment before I start my commute - I see Amalie Benjiman is reporting that Curt Schilling is playing catch tomorrow, a little ahead of schedule.

Not sure if y'all think of that as good news or what. I'm assuming we don't use/need Schilling this year, and any progress he has is good news in terms of the medical staff's ability to diagnose and treat.
   34. Third True Outcome Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2769792)
If Schill does come back in a few months, assuming Lester doesn't suck, what do they do with the rotation?
   35. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2769793)
This is maddening. I wish Dice K would trust his stuff more.
   36. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2769794)
Is there any chance this AB won't end in a walk?
   37. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2769797)
Coke me, Daisuke! Douche.
   38. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2769799)
I cant stand watching Dice K pitch. Only hate watching Wake more
   39. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2769800)
No chance.

No closeout pitch. Which is amazing for a guy who strikes out so many. And for a guy who has such a low BA against. If he didn't walk anybody, he'd be the best pitcher in the league by a mile.

Sigh.
   40. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2769801)
Has anyone ever had a no hitter with 180 pitches and 1000 walks?
   41. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2769802)
Ordonez bails him out big time. That was a terrible AB.
   42. Third True Outcome Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2769803)
In his gamecast photo, Miguel Cabrera looks like nothing so much as a mix of Pedro and Jabba the Hut. There's no chance the two of them were making time 25 years ago, is there?
   43. John DiFool2 Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2769805)
Minor miracle that DK hasn't given up any runs I gather.
   44. Joe Bivens, Ditch Digger Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2769809)

"That was a bomb to left."

   48. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2769814)
Minor miracle that DK hasn't given up any runs I gather.

Not per se. I mean, as much as the walks suck, it's hard to allow many runs when you don't allow a hit.
   49. Mike Hampton's #1 Fan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2769815)
Nice to see Youks hitting with a little more power lately.
   50. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2769816)
Still don't understand why Drew doesn't get the IF shift. When was the last time he hit a grounder to the left side?
   51. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2769817)
I doubt it - sorry. Didn't read the post properly

I don't want to believe it - it sickens me

I enjoy Nieporent's stance that Clemens had a platonic relationship until she turned 18, and then it turned sexual. Give me a ####### break.
   53. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2769820)
#### you Renteria.
   54. John DiFool2 Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2769821)
That was an amazing catch.
   55. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2769822)
I can't believe that useless turd caught that, Could be worse - imagine if that was Jeter. We'd be subjected to the highlight all ####### year
   56. Joe Bivens, Ditch Digger Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2769824)
That's classic Nieporent. Ray D takes it a step further by saying Clemens didn't deny having an affair, but that doesn't mean he had an affair with the 15 year old.

OK, enough, the Red Sox are on a roll lately. They're looking pretty good now that the flu has left the clubhouse.
   57. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2769825)
Detroit FOX guys having started whining like little #######. Only took 4 innings...

What the ####, Lugo? Bunting when you're up by 4 runs? Against a Leyland team? Someone's going to get ####### drilled for that.

   61. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:32 PM (#2769829)
Classic crappy Lugo at bat.

Hope Dice-K was watching that last pitch.

The gamesmanship of the Red Sox. Always stepping out of the box, slowing the game down, making life difficult for the pitchers
   65. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2769836)
Incoming 4-pitch walk.
   66. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2769837)

   67. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2769838)
Holy #### throw strikes you idiot.

Hey, our sideline reporter is actually attractive this year! That's good, since their only true purpose is to be good-looking.

C'Mon Dice - you have a 4 run lead!!!

   72. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2769848)
The hacktasticism helps.

Nice first pitch to Pudge. 12 feet outside.
   73. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2769849)
2 outs - this is where the fun start.

10 pitch at bat followed by a walk to pudge of all people
   74. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2769850)
After tonight, Matsuzaka is probably going to have the fewest hits allowed per inning in the AL, and the most walks allowed per inning in the league. Nice combo.
   75. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2769851)
Well, probably might be a bit strong. He might not catch Lee for the hits allowed.
   76. John DiFool2 Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2769853)
What's the record for walks in a no-hitter I idly wonder for no actual reason...
   77. Mike Hampton's #1 Fan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2769854)
It's not so much that I want him to deserve the win when he's not throwing well, it's more that I want him to be throwing well enough to get the win.

   79. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2769856)
(Before tonight he was second in the league at 5.05, behind Lee at 4.54)

Wow, walking Pudge Rodriguez. Amazing. That takes talent.

   82. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2769859)

   83. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2769860)
Jesus Christ.
   84. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2769861)
The seventh walk puts him in a tie for the league "lead" in walks allowed at 26 with Lester and Carmona. Wakefield is in 5th with 21.
   85. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2769862)
you deserve that dice
   86. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2769864)
Thanks for chasing the ball up by your eyeballs, Placido.
   87. Chip Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2769865)
The sad thing is, the Tigers keep tempting him into doing this by swinging at some of these really bad pitches. Like the one Polanco just popped out on.
   88. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2769866)
Well, the Tigers have a mix of patient hitters and guys like Polanco and Renteria and IRod.
   89. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:49 PM (#2769868)
This version of the Tigers is making the game length into something that belongs in a Yankees-Red Sox matchup.

Well, the Tigers have a mix of patient hitters and guys like Polanco and Renteria and IRod.

Agree Dan. But some of the walks are unacceptable. Even Sheffield as he was lead off with dice holding a 4 run lead. What's he scared of?
   91. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2769871)
Oh, it's been an unacceptable performance through and through. My point was just that Daisuke shouldn't be thinking that because Polanco is chasing #### 2 feet out of the zone that he should pitch the same way to Sheffield, for example.
   92. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2769874)
Damn, that was only about 2 inches off the LF line.
   93. Mike Hampton's #1 Fan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2769875)
To my shock, Ryan doesn't hold the record. He walked 8 in his third no-hitter, but A.J. Burnett walked 9 in his. That's the most I've found so far, but I'm still combing Retrosheet.
   94. John DiFool2 Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2769876)
Papi thinks he's Wade Boggs (and it seems to have helped him out of his slump).
   95. Dan Posted: May 05, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2769877)

Dock Ellis also walked 8 in his LSD-influenced no-hitter.
