I disapprove of the CF platooning. Jacoby needs to learn to hit lefties sooner or later.
   2. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:08 PM (#2771123)
Actually, with more thought, I think the lineup vs. LHP I'd like to see is:

RF Ellsbury
2B Pedroia
DH Ortiz
LF Ramirez
3B Lowell
1B Youkilis
C Varitek
CF Crisp
SS Lowrie (obviously this would actually be Lugo)
   3. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:09 PM (#2771127)
I disapprove of the first two ABs.

Coco out on three pitches, no attempt to even extend the AB.

Pedroia hacks at three pitches, grounds out weakly.

Way to show the rest of the lineup what the guy's got tonight!
   4. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:13 PM (#2771130)
And Manny gets all hacktastic too. Put a decent swing on the 0-2 pitch, but barely got it to the track. His hot start is a distant memory at this point. Trying too hard to get to #500, perhaps?
   5. Marcel Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2771132)
Actually, I don't mind seeing Crisp taking some pitches that are borderline. Maybe not with two strikes obviously, but it's better than hacking at everything not in the dirt.
   6. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:26 PM (#2771145)
Chip, Manny is still something like 3rd in the AL in OPS.
   7. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:26 PM (#2771146)
What the hell happens if everyone's healthy when Schilling is ready? Or Colón, for that matter? Are either of them willing to be used as relievers in 2-3 inning high leverage stints?
   8. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2771147)
I can't believe he put that pitch on a line. Nice piece of hitting.
   9. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2771150)
Dave Magadan is a ####### genius if Cash is for real.
   10. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2771153)
And Lugo with more hacktastic ####.
   11. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2771154)
Chip, Manny is still something like 3rd in the AL in OPS.

Yeah, but he was way out ahead of the league for most of April. Last ten days or so he's been ice cold: 5-32 with 2 doubles, no homers.
   12. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2771155)
Those were 3 ####### terrible at bats by Lugo, Crisp, and Pedroia.
   13. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2771161)
SO far, so good for Timmy.
   14. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2771167)
I'd like to see Youkilis swing this way all year for once. He was like this early last year, but then got pull-happy and his numbers went to ####.
   15. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2771178)
Another shocking line drive from Cash.
   16. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2771181)
That was a good bunt, but bunting on a 3-1 count?
   17. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2771182)
Wow, that was pretty perfect.
   18. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2771184)
Wtf are you sacrificing for against a guy who can't even throw strikes here?
   19. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2771185)
I hate that a lot. With Coco on the back end and Lugo on the front, a traditional DP there was highly unlikely.
   20. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2771188)
That sacrifice killed this inning.
   21. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2771189)
Yep, totally killed it.
   22. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2771191)
Jesus christ. Two more just awful ABs after the bunt.
   23. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2771192)
I'm having trouble comprehending the fact that Kevin Cash is hitting .353.
   24. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2771194)
This squander will kill us.
   25. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2771198)
Not only that Biff, but he's looked like a real hitter too.
   26. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2771202)
That was odd, but Manny will take it given his recent streak.
   27. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2771203)
I think he had a SSS slump over bits and pieces of two seasons, because before that he was a pretty decent hitter for a C. Either way I know nobody in this Chatter is missing Ewe-Know-Who.

   29. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2771207)
The official scorers in Detroit are absurd. That was a hit? Like hell.
   30. plink Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2771208)
It's called an error, Detroit announcers. It happens sometimes, even to good fielders.
   31. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2771213)
Youks channeling Lugo with the HACK!
   32. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2771215)
Manny has K'ed a ton this year. It's worrisome.

Coco's been not terribly awful to start the season, which is a very good sign. He is usually a very slow starter.

It's not a baseball season until Phil is telling us to do things to him sideways.
   33. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2771217)
OK these AB's are terrible
   34. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2771219)
The bright side is that Robertson only has one more inning left in him, and we'll have 3 IP to get to the Detroit pen.
   35. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2771220)
What's the explanation for Cash? Did they say that they "found something" with his swing?
   36. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2771223)
Cash worked out with Magadan at Magadan's house all winter, and Magadan supposedly completely remade Cash's swing.
   37. tfbg9 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2771224)
Evening boys.

I'm glad there was nothing about a camping trip up in the mountains.
   40. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2771229)
Thanks Dan. That's interesting stuff. Could he take some awful hitter back to his house every winter? Or how about 5-10 of them? Make it a camp.
   41. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2771230)
Wakes appears to be really on tonite. Now if we can just unf*ck Dice-K we'd have a pretty killer rotation.

teddy baby - how is it?

Who's the new guy at SS?
   44. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2771233)
Lugo!! (?)
   45. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2771235)
Renteria doesn't make that good play that Lugo just did. In fact he missed a similar one earlier.

I don't miss him anymore...
   46. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2771236)
Sorry to hear it Phil.

On Cash, if he even hits .230/.300/.360, it has to be a huge feather in Magadan's cap. He was previously the worst hitter in the past 50 years or so.
   47. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2771237)
He'll hack at the first pitch in his AB this inning, even when it's a changeup 12 feet off the plate, and you'll know it's the same guy.
   48. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2771240)
I think the end of this article was where I had read that, but perhaps it was mentioned elsewhere as well.
   49. tfbg9 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2771241)
It's OK. I moved out of the Big Toilet, to a suburb of.

Renteria doesn't make that good play that Lugo just did. In fact he missed a similar one earlier.

And as if on cue...

Still, it's sort of important to remember that Renteria has outhit Lugo by about 500 OPS points each of the last couple years.
   51. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2771243)
I have now completely wiped the name of the Sox former backup C completely from my memory banks.

Really.
   52. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2771245)
I don't know what Kevin Cash is on, but I'd like some.
   53. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2771246)
I remember watching or reading an interview with Magadan where he said that Cash's swing previously was not in the plane to make contact for very long, and that he had worked with Cash to level his swing and keep him in the hitting plane longer, so he had a higher chance of squaring up the ball.
   54. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2771249)
Cash is 3-3 now. .371 .439 .486
   55. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2771250)
I don't think cash will continue to hit hit .350/.450/.450, but something like .260/.340/.360 is attainable, I think.
   56. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2771251)
Hey, Amica Zone is back. And it shows Lugo had a right to be annoyed about that strike three call.
   57. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2771252)
The Red Sox have two of the emptiest .290 hitters in their lineup.

hehe

National League doesn't count...

just kidding - i just wanted to say something nice about that sad sack of #### Lugo for once
   59. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2771255)
What's most annoying about the big squanders so far is that there's no Paps and no Oki tonight. This is setting up for a Timlin meltdown in the 9th.
   60. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2771256)
What is so hard about writing this top of the lineup down for every game:

Pedroia
Youkilis
Ortiz
Manny

Why always trying to shoe-horn in another inferior hitter at the top?
   61. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:33 PM (#2771257)
Smart calloff Manny. That's exactly the kind of popup we've seen Lugo botch recently.
   62. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2771258)
Wakes is unconscious tonite.
   63. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2771259)
I prefer the lineup with Ellsbury hitting leadoff and Youkilis 6th personally, Darren.
   64. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2771260)

I prefer the lineup with Ellsbury hitting leadoff and Youkilis 6th personally, Darren.

I like Jacoby hitting 9th to tell you the truth.

Dusty, Youk, Pap, Manny, Mike, JD, Vagitek, Lowrie, Jacoby.
   65. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2771261)
At least vs. RHP, I prefer it. Perhaps Pedroia should lead off vs LHP; I'm not sure how Ellsbury's platoon splits are.
   66. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2771262)
Here's what I do with Colon, assuming he is healthy and able, after some AAA rehab, to go 6-8 innings. Give each starter (perhaps even Beckett) an off-day from the rotation between now and late June. And start with Dice-K, and have him pitch a simulated game when Colon is spelling him, from behind the screen with the pitching coach standing right there.
   67. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2771264)
Another dreadful Pedroia AB, chasing way out of the zone for the popup.
   68. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2771266)
I can't believe that Robertson is still in this game. What a colossal series of squanders.
   69. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2771268)
Why would you want to have Youkilis hitting 6th? He is great at getting on base and doesn't have a ton of power. He's a very good top of the order hitter, as is Pedroia. Both have so far proven to be better than Ellsbury. Ellsbury is great in the 9-hole because he can then get on base in front of our singles hitters without pushing them down a spot (or spots) in the lineup.

Having Ellsbury lead off is defensible, I guess, but using Crisp or Lugo in his absence seems like a waste.
   70. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2771269)
Strike two to Papi low and outside, according to Amica.
   71. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2771274)
The world is right again.

   74. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2771277)
Yes, I'd like to see Pedroia hitting leadoff when Ellsbury isn't.

Nice drive by Ortiz.

   78. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2771285)
Since the 2nd in game in the Toronto series, Ortiz's swing and approach has finally looked right. At least I think that was the first game he looked right, if I remember correctly.
   79. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2771286)
Nice first career pitch, buddy.

Manny was really running hard out of the box. Must be used to missing the HRs lately.
   86. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2771296)
I really didn't think that was going to get out.
   87. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2771298)
Anyone know how many that is now that Papi and Manny go back-to-back?
   88. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2771301)
Why would you want to have Youkilis hitting 6th? He is great at getting on base and doesn't have a ton of power. He's a very good top of the order hitter, as is Pedroia.

Youkilis was 4th on the team in SLG last year, no? And second so far this year. That would seem to make him well-suited to the 6th spot.

(There was some chatter on a pre- or post-game show this past week - during the Tampa series, I think - about all the different lineup positions Youks has been used in, and McCarty indicated the one spot he doesn't like is leadoff.)
   89. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2771304)
That one looked like a strike, but not called because Cash didn't catch it.
   90. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2771306)
Wouldn't you rather have a good hitter like Youks at the top of the lineup where he gets more ABs? Why 6th, behind a clearly inferior hitter in Lowell, and where his .390ish OBP is going to be wasted hitting in front of the team's worst hitters?
   91. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2771308)
It would be pretty awesome if Wake could pull off the CG ShO tonight.
   92. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2771311)
Aww, Pedroia.
   93. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2771312)

When did Lugo start playing second base?
   96. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2771319)
On Amelie Benjamin's blog, she had something about how Wakefield had like 3 wins with 9 or more BBs in that great year he had with the Pirates. In one, he had 10 BBs and 1 K in 10 IP.
