I guess I shouldn't say Youk is clearly superior to Lowell, but he's very likely better.
   102. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2771334)
Cash has looked completely different this year though. I'm buying into Magadan fixing him.
   103. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2771337)
Well then Darren, you can flip Youk and Lowell, it doesn't really matter.
   104. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2771341)
Cash obviously back to sucking. He actually made an out!
   105. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2771342)
The question is how long the fix lasts.

But even if Cash reverts to his former self for the rest of the year, his hitting so far will be good enough to make him appreciably better for the season than he was in the past.
   106. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2771343)
Actually, I think my ideal lineup vs RHP would be:

CF Ellsbury
2B Pedroia
DH Ortiz
LF Ramirez
1B Youkils
RF Drew
3B Lowell
C Varitek
SS Lowrie

But you're still putting your 2nd best OBP after your best hitters.

Nice first career pitch, buddy.

hope he doesn't turn into okijima
   109. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2771352)
I'm always stunned when Lugo walks.

Lowrie has been invisible this week.
   110. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2771354)
Way to take advantage of that count leverage, Coco.
   111. Srul Itza Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2771355)
Nice to see the Manny Ramirez Contract Tour is still going strong.

Will the Sox pick up his option?
   112. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2771356)
I'm always stunned when Crisp pops out on a 2-0 pitch.

It must be fun pitching to Crisp. No matter if you're behind in the count, you can just pour pitches over the middle of the plate without fear.
   113. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2771359)
Apparently Denny Hocking is working an analyst for MLB.com? Odd.
   114. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2771365)
that was filthy to Sheffield
   115. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2771366)
Is this Wakefield's best career start? It has to be up there, especially considering the lineup he's facing.
   116. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2771369)
Ump has loved that ball off the plate inside all night. It's part of what kept Robertson in the game for so long. First time Wake has gotten a real benefit from it, though.

I think it is a no doubter, Srul.
   118. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2771373)
Are you talking about Cash? Dude frickin hit under .200 in AAA last year, I don't think he's a decent hitter, even for a C.

The .176 at Paw last year was in 176 ABs, and the .183 in Durham in 240 ABs. Before that he had, in AAA OPS of .898, .773, .723, and .850 in AA. Just mix in some good coaching and he's just back to where he was 3+ years ago.
   119. Marcel Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2771374)
Unless he totally tanks for the rest of the season, I can't imagine them not picking up his option. It's really either that or outbid the Yankees for Teixeira.
   120. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2771377)
Lots of fastballs from Wake. Made the mistake of throwing two in a row to Pudge.
   121. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2771378)
Nope, I was wrong. It was a knuckler for the hit - just stayed up.
   122. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2771380)
But he's also got a career OPS of 514. He has a long history of being a terrible, awful hitter.
   123. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2771382)

And play Youkilis in LF then?
   124. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2771383)
Loving these first pitch hacks

Man - did the bullpen ever need this.

I am going to say nice things about Wake for a while
   125. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2771384)
when do we know the results of the primaries??
   126. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2771385)
I honestly don't know who they can put into left if they let Manny go. There's a surprising shortage of elite-hitting LFers in the game lately, and guys in our system like Kalish and Reddick won't be ready (if they ever are) by '09. Which means we overpay ($$$ + prospects) for the decline phase of someone like Burrell, who then blocks a kid when said kid is ready in '10.
   127. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2771386)
Pat Burrell, Adam Dunn, and Bobby Abreu will also be available.
   128. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2771388)
Why the hell not send out Wakefield for the 9th?
   129. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2771389)
when do we know the results of the primaries??

Obama appears to have won NC in a runaway - they called it for him immediately after the polls closed.

CBS has called Indiana for Clinton, but other networks are still labelling it too close to call. Appears as if she'll win but narrowly, and the delegate split may be even.
   130. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2771390)
Burrell's only 32 next year and Dunn's 29. Not youngsters but not in heavy decline territory either.
   131. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2771392)

<SIGH> No he doesn't, which is precisely my point. Just check out his minors record at the Baseball Cube or wherever; a guy who has a minors hitting record of .247/.328/.422/.750 can be my backup C just fine.
   132. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2771393)
I don't understand pulling Wakefield at all.

And to put Timlin in? Ugh. Francona's loyalty to him knows no bounds. As Orsillo points out, Tavarez hasn't pitched in forever, why not give him some work?
   133. tfbg9 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2771395)
Timlin warms...
   134. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2771396)
That "long history" BTW encompasses just 358 major league ABs over tiny bits of 5 seasons.
   135. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2771397)
Timlin hasn't pitched in forever either, has he?
   136. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2771398)
Thanks chip

What the #### is this useless sack of crap warming up for?? They'll tee off on him
   137. tfbg9 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2771399)
I like how Wake snuck a few 0-0 fastballs in there to get ahead with the 5-0 lead.
   138. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2771401)
why not give Wake the complete game, he's ####### cruising?
   139. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2771402)
Dunn would be the only one I'd consider (even if it does make the lineup lefty-heavy)-the entire city of Cincy seems to think he sucks, or something, so you might be able to get him on the cheap.
   140. Marcel Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2771407)
####. I was hoping they were going to use this as a confidence boosting inning for MDC. Guess that was just wishful thinking.
   141. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2771408)
I'd rather pay 1/20 for Manny than sign another defensive liability to a longterm deal.
   142. John DiFool2 Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2771412)
Dare I hope with everybody coming off the DL soon that they'll release Timlin? If they keep him while bouncing Hansen back down they're totally off their nut.

* * *

QED.
   143. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2771413)
Anyone not expect that result?
   144. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2771414)
To me, the lefty-righty thing is the reason I even consider picking up Manny's option. The lineup becomes very lefthanded without him.

Timlin looks good. Who thinks we're going to see Pap tonight?
   145. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2771415)
I hope timlin gives up for 4 runs, we win and he retires
   146. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2771416)
Why didn't he use Lopez against Granderson, THEN bring out Timlin?
   147. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2771417)
What if Manny would sign for 2/30? Would you do that?
   148. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2771419)

I'd rather pay 1/20 for Manny than sign another defensive liability to a longterm deal.

Hellz jeah
   149. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2771420)
When's the last time Timlin cracked 90 on the gun? Everything so far has been 87-89.
   150. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2771422)
Too bad Burrell's raking it this year. He would have probably been a bargain otherwise.
   151. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2771426)
Lugo almost ###### that up.
   152. Marcel Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2771428)
Holy quick game Batman!
   153. Darren Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2771429)
Yay, Timlin. Remember, he looked like toast last year for a while too.

He seems like soembody who would fail utterly in Boston.

Because they're up by 5.

It's only 9:30?

This series is looking really good now with Clay and Josh going next two nights.
   157. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2771438)
Timlin will be unavailble tomorrow night, awesome.
   158. Chip Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2771442)
Credit where credit is due to Timlin.

Outstanding performance at a perfect time by Wakefield.
   159. Dan Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2771444)
I still would have left in Wakefield.

When you put it like that , you are right

hilarious

Joba blew a game? Oh, the humanity!

The expressions on the faces of the fans YES showed in the stands the next inning were priceless.
   162. kevin Posted: May 07, 2008 at 10:01 AM (#2771972)
Why would you want to have Youkilis hitting 6th? He is great at getting on base and doesn't have a ton of power. He's a very good top of the order hitter, as is Pedroia. Both have so far proven to be better than Ellsbury.

Darren, for god's sake, will you check how many runs Ellsbury is scoring vs the number of game he is playing?

He must be leading the league on a rate basis.
   163. kevin Posted: May 07, 2008 at 10:31 AM (#2772003)
Ellsbury is also has a higher career OBP than both Youkilis and pedroia and is waaaaaaaaaaaaaayy faster.

But let's not let a few facts and common sense interfere with the thought processes, huh?
