So I understand that this is how the ninth inning went last night.

Infield single
Error on that piece of #### Lugo
Sacrifice
Groundout, run scores
Broken-bat bloop single

What a ####### way to lose.
   2. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 07:08 PM (#2774160)
The infield single was a ball that hit the bat on a checked swing on an 0-2 count, to boot.
   3. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 07:18 PM (#2774168)
Gun seems a few MPH slow.
   4. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2774183)
That was a piss poor Papi-when-he-was-still-slumping AB to end the inning.

Of course, the mysterious disappearance of the Amica Zone doesn't help judge whether those fastballs were outside or not.
   5. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2774190)
As much as not having Manny's bat in there sucks, this defensive OF in this park is fantastic.
   6. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2774200)
Worst bunt ever.
   7. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2774207)
Lots of early count swings by the Tigers. Guess the scouting report says not to wait around and let him get ahead.
   8. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2774213)
Three straight ABs against the bottom of the lineup where he can't close anybody out.
   9. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2774214)
So is this gun off or are Beckett and Verlander both only throwing 92-93?
   10. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2774216)
Granderson really looks like a dead fastball hitter.
   11. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2774219)
Steal!
   12. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2774220)
Damn, that was one hell of a catch.
   13. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2774221)
What the #### are you doing swinging 3-0?
   14. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2774222)
Jesus christ Papi. Two absolutely awful ABs. 3-0, and you're chasing a ball off the plate and popping it up?
   15. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2774223)
Youkilis really likes it in Detroit, huh?
   16. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2774224)
YOUKS!

What a power surge.
   17. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2774225)
Can we hope that Dr. Youks stays with us the whole year, and not get impersonated by Mr. Hack halfway through the season again?
   18. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2774228)
Since he hit that HR on the first pitch, there was a bit of Mr. Hack in it. Like Manny, he's done a lot of first-pitch swinging recently, it seems.
   19. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2774229)
There's nothing wrong with swinging at the first pitch if it's what you're looking for.
   20. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2774231)
You suck Lugo.
   21. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2774232)
The Ellsbury hack, not so great.
   22. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2774238)
Youks is K-ing on 15% of his ABs this year: during the 2nd half last year it was over 25%, but during his hot May it was 12%.
   23. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2774239)
Interference!
   24. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2774240)
Pedroia, proving he's no basestealer, forgets he's supposed to pay attention to where the ball ends up and allows himself to get deked.
   25. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2774241)
Speaking of Youks' K-ing. That AB was extreme Mr. Hack.
   26. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2774242)
####. They're going to squander this opportunity.
   27. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2774244)
This is looking like another epic squander.
   28. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2774245)
Coke, please.
   29. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2774246)
That just nullifies the one you owed me from last night.
   30. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2774247)
Doesn't the virtual cooler keep electronic records?
   31. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2774248)
Someone should suggest that for a new feature for the site to Jim.
   32. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2774249)
####. ####. ####. ####.

It was downhill from the moment Pedroia broke for second and proved he was no Ellsbury.
   33. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2774253)
Come on, Josh, get Granderson for the 4th time!
   34. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2774254)
I think everyone here wants Josh in there through the 8th.
   35. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2774255)
Dan, as you suggested earlier, this is definitely a slower-than-Fenway NESN gun. Verlander's and Beckett's fastballs have both been low-90s all night; also, Beckett's changeup is often 90-91 at home; tonight it's registering at 86-87.

NESN realizes after the fact that Beckett just hit the 1000 K plateau in his career.
   36. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2774256)
That'll do it.
   37. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2774257)
I don't want to see Beckett for the 8th. He's been good, but not fantastic, he's over 100 pitches, and the team has a 4 run lead.
   38. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2774258)
Here we go with another squander opportunity against Dolsi.
   39. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2774259)
It makes me sad that Lugo is so bad that I actually am glad to see him bunting.
   40. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2774260)
That's our Julio, can't even execute a first-pitch sac bunt properly.
   41. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2774261)
As far as the 8th inning, if the Sox score or not, I would like to see Delcarmen pitching.
   42. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2774262)
Or a second pitch sac bunt. You incompetent piece of ####.
   43. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2774263)
I cannot say anything else about Lugo that I haven't already said, so I must remain silent.
   44. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2774264)
SO ####### useless.
   45. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2774265)
Why won't Theo just man up and admit he screwed up with Lugo?
   46. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2774266)
Leyland's right, hit the bat twice.

Absolutely the dumbest player in baseball.
   47. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2774268)
I think Julio Lugo is the first player on the Red Sox that I have truly disliked enough to wish him ill will.
   48. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2774269)
I'd like to see Hansen for the 8th.
   49. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2774270)
Just curious...what is Ortiz hitting in May, because .241 sure looks a lot better than whatever it was in April.

Maybe reports of his demise were exaggerated.
   50. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2774271)
Hansen's been warming, so seems likely.
   51. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2774272)
Wok: I'd like to see Delcarmen for the 8th, and Hansen for the 9th.
   52. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2774273)
I can't remember the last one, Dan, whom I loathed as much. Butch Hobson was a bit before my time, but same general kind of brain dead player.
   53. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2774274)
Hee hee.
   54. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2774275)
Bellylard: Ortiz has looked for a different hitter for the past week and a half or so. He's finally swinging well.
   55. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2774277)
Great AB Pedroia. Sheesh.
   56. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2774279)
What a godawful AB
   57. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2774281)
Makeup call on the 1-1? The 1-0 was not a strike.
   58. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2774282)
*throws chair*
   59. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2774283)
They're going to regret the three consecutive squanders, aren't they? 7 LOB in the last three innings.
   60. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2774284)
Btw, why didn't Francona pinch hit Manny for Lugo this inning?
   61. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2774285)
Hell, PH Lowrie. He could probably get the bunt down, at least.
   62. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2774286)
I remember another one now: Luis Rivera. Awful percentage player, yet the Sox somehow conspired to give him over 2000 ABs in his career.
   63. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2774290)
I can honestly say I hate Lugo more than I hate Millar and Hillenbrand.
   64. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2774291)
Bob "Beetle" Bailey was very hateable.

Hobson really wasn't. There's charm in a guy who has to adjust the bone chips in his elbow between throws to first.

Hillenbrand, of course, was as hateable as Lugo, and only became more so upon departure.
   65. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2774293)
Nice slider for strike two to Mags.
   66. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2774294)
This gun is almost certainly 3 MPH slow or so.
   67. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2774296)
Nice inning.
   68. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2774298)
Well apparently I got the cast right for the 8th and 9th innings, just got the order wrong.
   69. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:52 PM (#2774299)
Manny's turning into Pedro on his days off in the dugout.
   70. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2774300)
If francona tries to milk another IP out of Hansen he should be shot.
   71. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2774301)
I just hope there's someone warming behind MDC.
   72. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2774302)
Impressive changeup to get the Fat Man.
   73. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:56 PM (#2774303)
Scrappy saves another hit.
   74. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:57 PM (#2774305)
I posted this in the Sox topic on the main board:

Fun with selective endpoints:

Ortiz since April 18th (16 games) - .348/.434/.697

Doesn't include tonight, of course.
   75. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2774308)
What was wrong with the 0-1?
   76. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2774309)
Wow. That was cool.

Joyce was staring down Pedroia as if to say, "How the #### did you do that?"
   77. John DiFool2 Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2774311)
Beckett does make this team rather slump-proof.
   78. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2774312)
Warming Papelbon there is a bit over the top.
   79. Chip Posted: May 08, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2774313)
OK, MDC, nice baby step back to usefulness.
   80. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 08, 2008 at 10:00 PM (#2774314)
Nice that we were a ridiculous ninth inning away from sweeping a 4-game series on the road against a team that is probably still a playoff contender.
   81. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2774318)
Stat from BBTN: Longest stretch of PAs this year for Youkilis to not reach base is 6.
   82. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2774319)
I have trouble calling the Tigers a playoff contender with that pitching staff.
   83. Dan Posted: May 08, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2774320)
But then again, the Indians offense has disappeared in an equal fashion, so no team is the central is particularly great.
   84. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 09, 2008 at 05:53 AM (#2774386)
#### that pedroia play was awesome
