thot on Sox huge home/road split:

ALL of MLB has lagrer-than-normal home win pct this year. To date, home teams are 455-329 (guess what? road teams are 329-455!), for a .580 wpct. Typical home wpct over time is .540 to .550. Beginning to push the bounds of chance (I figure the st dev of wpct for 780 games to be about .018). Probably still random, unless someone has a (conspiracy?) theory as to why MLB should begin turning into the NBA (lose at home? Nevah!).

A possible explanation would be better understanding of park effects, and constructing rosters better based on that understanding. But I don't think that would account for nearly all of it.
   3. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: May 28, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2797520)
I have a couple of thoughts. One is that there's a lot of parity in baseball this year, and that would lead to home teams winning more often, because more games are close going into the last at bat, which is held by the home team.

Another is that teams are less and less likely to use their best relief pitcher in a tie game on the road. That puts them at a significant disadvantage.

How we gonna lose this one? Any predictions??

In other news - Joba pitched today.
   6. Benji Gil Gamesh Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:09 PM (#2797693)
Prediction? Paaaaain....
   7. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2797698)
Since Bedard decided to suck against the Yankees, he will pitch a no-hitter tonight.
   8. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2797702)
Jacoby goes from hacking in most of his lead-off-the-game ABs lately to never getting his bat off his shoulder in this one.

Prediction? Paaaaain....

Thanks Clubber!!
   10. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2797709)
Knowing that Pedroia will swing 2-1 regardless of what the pitch is, Bedard throws him a curveball that didn't look like a strike. And of course he swings at it, putting himself in 2-2 instead of 3-1.
   11. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2797726)
I'll be surprised if Bedard resigns with the Mariners. He's a free agent after this season, right?
   12. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2797735)
I thought they negotiated an extension with him?
   13. Marcel Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2797746)
Nope, but he's not a free agent until after 2009 regardless
   14. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2797756)
Erik Bedard signed a one year, 7 million dollar deal with the Seattle Mariners on February 15th, avoiding any salary arbitration

my last was cut and pasted from wiki

Is he a Boras client?
   17. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:26 PM (#2797768)
Pedroia pretending he has hops.
   18. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:26 PM (#2797770)
If he was taller - it wouldn't be a web gem...

:)
   19. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:31 PM (#2797779)
####. I thought Coco had that. But that's the dead part of the park - ball travels much better to right than it does to left.

Way out in Fenway.
   20. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:32 PM (#2797780)
damn it
   21. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:33 PM (#2797782)
First thing I thought was "thats a ####### homer at Fenway " as well
   22. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:34 PM (#2797787)
Wake looks sharp so far, huh?
   23. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:34 PM (#2797788)
Always good to see the dropper AND swings and misses from Wake.
   24. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:37 PM (#2797800)
Hat trick!
   25. Textbook Editor Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2797809)
So, any reason why Varitek again had the night off with Dice-K last night? I didn't see any explanation in the game stories I read? I really am wondering if they're seeing if Dice-K responds better to Cash catching him.
   26. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:41 PM (#2797816)
Uh, Varitek played last night.
   27. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2797819)
That was a Jon Lester style 4-pitch walk out of nowhere by Bedard.
   28. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2797824)
kevin - celtics looking good so far...
   29. Textbook Editor Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2797826)
Huh. For some reason I had it in my head Cash was up a few times last night... This is what I get for trying to do work while occasionally glancing at Gameday. Mea culpa.

   31. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2797828)
jesus - with Bedard paiting these corners we are proper ######
   32. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2797833)
Nice throw, Cairo.

But Betancourt didn't help him out much.
   33. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2797834)
Lord, is Ellsbury fast. He intimidates the fielders into rushing their throws.
   34. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2797842)
Or Cairo just sucks at making that throw.
   35. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:48 PM (#2797849)
You know your team sucks when you have to start Miguel Cairo at first base.
   36. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2797854)
Celts are up 13 going into the 4th, Phil. Perkins has 16 points and 16 rebounds and has dominated underneath.
   37. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2797855)
No hit again first time through the order. Seems like that's happened more often than not on this trip.
   38. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:52 PM (#2797879)
Celts are up 13 going into the 4th, Phil. Perkins has 16 points and 16 rebounds and has dominated underneath.

Yeah - I watched until this game started.
   39. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:53 PM (#2797884)
Ellsbury and Pedroia, BTW, now at 6-38 on this road trip, with 4 walks. They've both sucked royally on the road this year. Ellsbury is just an utter nightmare; Tito might need to consider batting him 9th when they're away from Fenway.
   40. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2797887)
I wish Pedroia had the arm for short - he is so good there at second
   41. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:57 PM (#2797898)
Cairo shits me - but he reminds me of the 2004 Yankees - so I like him.
   42. Dan Posted: May 28, 2008 at 10:59 PM (#2797904)
Hey - a hit!
   43. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:00 PM (#2797905)
Manny going opposite field is encouraging, but so is seeing him turn on a good fastball when he's in a protect count.
   44. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:00 PM (#2797906)
Is it just me or is Joba seen as a saviour to the Yankee rotation like Clemens was last year?

Hit hard by Manny - like his last at bat
   45. Marcel Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:01 PM (#2797908)
Well, Pedroia's OPS was +.190 at home last year too. He definitely takes advantage of being able to put balls off the wall. I'm more concerned that his walk rate has dropped by almost 3% this year.
   46. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:04 PM (#2797915)
You are kidding - just missed the foul - then what looked like a hit up the middle...
   47. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:07 PM (#2797918)
I haven't looked at the spray charts recently, but I'd swear teams are pinching the middle more against the Sox this year.
   48. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:09 PM (#2797920)
Celtics trying to blow their lead.

Oops, Rasheed just gave them a chance to rebuild it.
   49. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:12 PM (#2797926)
Yeah - I'm watching - the Detroit defense is relentless - jesus
   50. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:14 PM (#2797930)
Jesus christ.
   51. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:15 PM (#2797933)
How many did he give up vs. the Yankees?
   52. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:15 PM (#2797935)
Rondo has no clue how to break this defense down. He should be mauling them but he's timidly giving the ball up 5 feet from the halfcourt line instead.
   53. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2797951)
How many did he give up vs. the Yankees?

9 in 4.3 IP.
   54. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:20 PM (#2797955)
That drive by Rondo? He could have that on almost every play. All he has to do is force a mismatch and beat the big guy to the hole.
   55. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:20 PM (#2797956)
Thanks Chip - that'd be right
   56. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:21 PM (#2797960)
Why did Rondo foul him on a risky 3 point shot?
   57. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:21 PM (#2797962)
Now Rondo fouls a double-clutching Billups on a three that was only intended to draw a foul, not be made. Stupid.
   58. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:22 PM (#2797963)
Rondo just made the stupidest foul I have seen this year.
   59. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:22 PM (#2797966)
Why did Rondo foul him on a risky 3 point shot?

Because he's a playground player who has no clue what professional basketball is all about.
   60. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:23 PM (#2797968)
####.
   61. Dan Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:23 PM (#2797969)
Can't buy any luck here in Seattle, JEsus.
   62. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:25 PM (#2797971)
####. ####.
   63. Dan Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:25 PM (#2797972)
Two balls absolutely scorched, two outs.
   64. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:25 PM (#2797973)
And then Rondo makes the worst pass I have seen this year.

Lord, is he awful. He got bailed out by the ref. Why hasn't the coaching staff cured him of making soft passes yet?
   65. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:25 PM (#2797974)
#### this road trip is shitting me
   66. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:26 PM (#2797976)
David, what the #### are you swinging at?
   67. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:26 PM (#2797977)
AND YOU SWUNG AT IT AGAIN!
   68. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:27 PM (#2797978)

   69. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:27 PM (#2797981)
He's a terrible FT shooter.

####.
   71. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:29 PM (#2797984)
Rondo blows. He has no idea what the point guard position is all about. He can't even run a simple pick and roll play.
   72. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:32 PM (#2797986)
I cant get over how bad they are playing in the final quarter
   73. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:32 PM (#2797987)
Big shot by Allen.
   74. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:32 PM (#2797988)
Huge shot by Allen!
   75. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:32 PM (#2797989)
Thank you Miguel.
   76. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:33 PM (#2797990)
Finally a nice defensive sequence too.
   77. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:33 PM (#2797991)
He was out.
   78. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:34 PM (#2797992)

   79. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:34 PM (#2797993)
Hope that wakes up the sox
   80. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:35 PM (#2797995)
I can't really comprehend how Miguel Cairo can start a game at first base.
   81. Dan Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:37 PM (#2797996)
It's especially stupid to start Cairo at first base when they start a first baseman in left field.
   82. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:38 PM (#2797999)
This is nerve wracking
   83. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:40 PM (#2798004)
Rondo not aware there, could have had the steal on the bad pass to Stuckey.
   84. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:41 PM (#2798006)
Stuckey just choked.
   85. Dan Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:43 PM (#2798009)
A win's a win, but that wasn't pretty in the 4th.
   86. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:43 PM (#2798010)
jesus christ kevin - that was ####### nerve wracking!!

####### sox suck btw
   87. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:43 PM (#2798011)
Whew. I don't feel good about this one. The Celtics don't have a killer instinct like the eighties teams did.
   88. Chip Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:44 PM (#2798012)
OK, this road ineptitude has to stop. Now. It's become pathetic.
   89. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:44 PM (#2798013)
Mn, what a pair of twins on that blonde.
   90. kevin Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:45 PM (#2798015)
They're wasting a good outing by Wake too.
   91. Dan Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:46 PM (#2798016)
Oh great, Morrow is warming.
   92. Darren Posted: May 28, 2008 at 11:47 PM (#2798018)
The Home/Raod thing is probably a fluke (or sleep patterns), but it's frustrating to watch.

Hey, Lugo made a play! That's a positive development.

Hopefully Morrow doesn't have as much on the fastball tonight as he did last night..
