God damnit. This team is very good at hitting into those.

UGGGHHHHH

Love Youks taking only three pitches to make not just one but two outs, following the consecutive walks.

Varitek staring down to Hale to see if there's a play on scares me, after his recent miserable failures at hit-and-run plays.

No excuse there, giving Crisp such a jump.
   112. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2842536)
Varitek, you idiot. Pettitte is having control issues, you have a 3-1 count, and you lunge for that ####?

No excuse there, giving Crisp such a jump.

As Remy said, it's just a straight guess against Pettitte's balk move - you go as soon as he lifts his leg, and take your chance that he's actually going home.

Weak productive out given the count.
   114. Dan Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2842539)
What the #### are you swinging at that for on 3-1?
   115. kevin Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2842540)
Why did Tek do that? Wouldn't it be better if he got on base with no outs?

   125. Dan Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2842566)
Reaching out of the zone on two strikes is better than doing it on 3-1.
   126. salajander Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2842567)
I can't believe this team scored 9 runs in an inning last night. After 3.2 innings tonight that doesn't seem possible.
   127. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2842569)
Lester needs to start changing speeds, because the Yankees are starting to get aggressive.
   128. Chip Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2842570)
Lester certainly has settled down after the two walks leading off the game.

Lester is really cruising
I'm glad he was never actually traded,
especially since he was mentioned in every potential big deal going back to the A-Rod saga

Probably won't get the chance tonight, either, to face the "free passes for everyone" pitching of Hansen and Delcarmen in the same inning.

Evening, all. (Morning, Phil.)

I'm having fun watching YES. Whoever said they're better than NESN, well, it's only true because of Leiter. He manages to un-suck the booth.

But in a blowout, I'd rather take the goofy banter. I'm switching back to NESN.

Give me a break

A contending team must have many different roles filled by their roster.
Let's do a head to head comparison:
Yankee's Fat F@ck - Sydney Ponson - 260 lbs
Red Sox's Fat F@ck - Bartolo Colon - 250 lbs

Edge: Yankees by 10 lbs.

Can't this be explained by the Japan opener? And isn't it better for you guys since you will get more time off down the stretch (and you're an older team)?

They were referencing the fact that like 22 of Joba's last 23 strikeouts were swinging. There are a lot of reasons to get on YES. This is/was not one of them.

Head to Head Comparison continued:
Role: Captain Intangibles
Red Sox: Jason Varitek - 10,200 google hits on jason varitek intangibles
Yankees: Derek Jeter - 27,100 google hits on derek jeter intangibles

Edge: Yankees by 16,900 intangibles

Giese with the Rodrigo Lopez Memorial Junkballing Righty effort tonight.
   165. ekogan Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2842714)
Giese brings up the ball behind his body and takes it out from behind his head.
That makes him much more deceptive.
Maddox does the same thing.

I just find it weird. And the Japan opener was only two games. And the Red Sox are well ahead of Oakland in games played as well, in fact.
   168. Chip Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2842719)
Oh ####. They activated him today instead of sending him out for rehab.

That guarantees Tito will use him in a high leverage situation immediately.

hey vi - hope your well - this is not a blowout!

I'm well. We were down in NYC last weekend for the girl's 10th birthday. Good times. And we're coming up on the 2nd anniversary of mrsidiom's stroke. She has come a long way, but she's still making progress.

Lester's being incredibly efficient.

Boy, am I glad they didn't trade him for Santana.

Likewise, I'm glad the Yankees didn't trade Ian Kennedy for him.

On that... Boston sent Buchholz down to AAA after the DL stint and Francona said, "We just want to make sure he understood what we’re trying to do... We’re trying to take out the [element] of him concerning about the line score. He can go be consistent [in Pawtucket] and pound the strike zone with his fastball. He can work on his arm slot and things like that." The Yankees sent Ian Kennedy to A-ball after the DL stint and said, "He’s not on the D.L. now. This is earning his way back, just like the other 175 players or so in the minors." If I'm either of these guys, I'd rather be in the Red Sox organization. No?

Prior to the game that landed him on the DL, Timlin had a 2.89 ERA over 19 appearances, not allowing any of his 5 inherited runners to score.

Per Hardball Times:
Posada has 1.44 Stolen base attempts per game and 9.4% CS
The only catcher with more stolen base attempts/game - Kevin Cash (25% CS)
Among regular catchers only Joe Buck of KC has a lower CS%.

I guess catcher defense doesn't matter if you're a lifelong Yankee
