I think Rear Window was much better than Vertigo.

Stealing 3rd with 2 outs is pointless

A bit like banging Madonna
   105. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2844471)
Not pointless, you score on a wild pitch or an infield hit. You just need to be 95% to do it
   106. PJ Martinez Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2844472)
You guys are all crazy.

Or, more likely, you're looking for different things in movies than I am. Rear Window's great but it doesn't hold a candle. The Godfather is stunningly good, but ultimately not as interesting.

Of course if a male and a female celebrity are seen together, they must be sleeping with each other

Bob Sheppard is the best thing about the Yankees, hands down.

What things are you looking for that make Vertigo more interesting than Godfather
   111. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:39 PM (#2844482)
The Godfather is pretty brilliant, but I'd like the best film of all time to be a bit more a film, not just a ripping good story with richly realized characters. Vertigo seems a valid choice.

#111 says it pretty well. Some day I'll try to say it better but if I tried now I'm sure I'd just come off as a pretentious blowhard.

There are two ways to look at a movie - as primarily a story or as a sequence of paintings. I prefer the story viewpoint, but even a visual snob could probably find a better movie than Vertigo. 2001: the space odyssey for example.

Buck was right about a few things, umpires not calling strikes and the incessant meetings with pitchers bring these games to a crawl.

Very little. He's not a hyped up prospect, he doesn't throw hard, he's blocked in Boston. He'd probably be a steal for someone in a trade

This is an overly simplistic dichotomy. Vertigo is much more psychologically involving, for me, than The Godfather, which is a great story, but with a fairly straightforward psychological story to tell.

I found 2001 boring. Granted I haven't seen it in a while.

Maybe, but I haven't ever read Tolstoy, actually. I've been meaning to sit down with Anna Karenina. It's just so damn long. Maybe I'll suck it up soon.

You should read some of his short stories then. They are only 100-150 pages each

   138. kevin Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:00 PM (#2844537)
The Godfather is so much more than that, though. It's a case study of one family's entry into the upper echelons of money, power and ambition. It's at least as ambitious as Vertigo in it's psychological dimension.

And the magnitude of a psychological dimension doesn't define the greatness of a film anyway. That is just one aspect of film making. Ford treaded lightly on that aspect in his films and he's numero uno.
   139. ekogan Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:02 PM (#2844540)
But are they as good?

They are very good. I like Tolstoy in general, although I hated Anna Karenina.
I have never waited for a train with as much impatience as when I was trying to finish Anna Karenina.
War and Peace is very good though
   140. PJ Martinez Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:04 PM (#2844544)
"That is just one aspect of film making."

Certainly true, and I agree with what you said about The Godfather-- and I'd also point to it's specifically American dimension ("I believe in America. I raised my daughters in the American style...")

As for what MC said about Vertigo being "more of a film": Vertigo is about the movies in a way that The Godfather is not, which is partly why I find it more interesting. Vertigo is about the way men idealize women, and, implicitly, about the way movies feed on this. Perhaps one of the reasons I like it more is just because that hits much closer to home than Michael Corleone's path toward evil does.

Path toward evil? I never got that. How is killing the men who tried to kill his father because he wouldn't support their drug trade evil? The men who slaughtered his brother for the same reason. The men who brutalized him for attempting to save his father's life.

Path toward power is more like it, and the compromises he's forced to make. If he doesn't take out Barzini et al, then he and the family are toast, and they all know it.

Godfather 2, you could argue that. Not Godfather 1.

Lopez and Hansen are opposites.
Lopez looks like he should be crappy, but is a decent reliever
Hansen looks like he should dominate, but is a schmuck

Godfather glamorizes gangsters. In real life, they are evil

What would A-Rod see in Madonna? She's 15 years his senior and has been shot as a beauty for over a decade, if she ever was one. Which I doubt anyway.

I think he's better off with the Brazilian stripper. Madonna wrecked Warren Beatty's career and she'll do the same to A-Rod.

How are the Corleones different from someone like, say, Dick Cheney? Cheney wasn't in the mob but I think he's worse than the Corleones ever were. At least the Corleones didn't hide behind hypocrisy.

Godfather only shows gangster-on-gangster violence. It doesn't show extortion, robbery, murder etc. that real gangsters use to support themselves.
Plus real gangsters aren't as intelligent or as cultured as Don Vito.
See the Goodfellas or Donnie Brasco for more realistic gangster characters.

I'm not saying that Dick Cheney is a ray of sunshine either

The Yankees are sandbagging. They want him in the game tomorrow too.

   183. ekogan Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:39 PM (#2844644)
I don't think the Red Sox should trade for a setup reliever. They should just wait for MDC to rediscover his control,
this will leave them with Oki-MDC-Paps for 7-8-9 innings - a decent group.
The prices for relievers are gonna be extremely high.
   184. ekogan Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:40 PM (#2844646)
Now Timlin will get at least 10 more opportunities to stink it up before Tito buries him

Youks whines out
