We need a blowout to rest the bullpen - oh wait - they are rested.

Thanks for the continued favors, Athletics.

And speaking of bad road teams, how about those Twins? Yeesh. As awful in NY tonight as they were on the trip to Fenway before the ASB.
   3. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 21, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2867154)
I know - I've been watching both those excellent teams put up great efforts tonight as well, Chip

Good evening all.

Phil - there was an early morning Lounge mention of the West Ham United fan violence in Columbus.

If the Yankees beat the Twins, Boston's lead in the wildcard race increases.
Go Yankees!!!

Is there anything in the world more grating than hearing Jerry Remy pronounce "Washburn"?
   7. ekogan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2867200)
Crisp is playing again. Free Sean Casey!
Why hasn't Casey played more?
   8. ekogan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2867205)
At least Lowrie is playing.
Jail Alex Cora!

Heard about it via email from Vince and RB - hilarious.

Man Dustin is not blooping these hits - they are smoked.

How you been Greg??

That was pretty terrible by Drew.

I don't mind not seeing Casey - better outfield defense. He has not even looked like hitting a homer this year.

Dammit Drew

Tom Caron and Don Orsillo pronouncing "Kazmir."

Another McCain ad on NESN. His claim to fame is being shot down, it's strange that for him being a loser is a positive.
   16. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2867248)
Nice slider to get Ichiro there
   17. Chip Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2867249)
Another test of Lester's growing maturity: so far in his young career he's sucked before the hometown crowd.
   18. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2867254)
His stuff looks good so far tonight. He really is the ace of the staff now eh?

Please tell me that fossil is not going to get in to the Oval office. The world doesn't need this #### any longer

It's taken him 200+ innings to get to this level. This is why the front office will continue to be patient with Buchholz and even someone like Delcarmen, I would expect. Not everyone is an instant success; most pitchers need a goodly number of innings before you really know what they are.
   21. Chip Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2867280)
Look what I found!
   22. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2867283)
#### of a game - two double plays already
   23. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2867285)
While that is true, Chip, he was also coming back from cancer, so it's tough to really know how much was adjustment and how much was recovery.
   24. ekogan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2867290)
Just based on his facial expressions, Manny looks like he has all of the maturity of a nine-year-old.
On the plus side, he's a mostly good natured nine-year-old, who's really good at baseball
   25. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2867291)
Rich Harden in the NL is just unfair.

Apparently the strike zone extends to the ankles tonight?

I figured you'd find it hilarious.... is it fair to label you as a prawn-sandwich type of supporter, or are you more in the middle?

I've been busy this spring, between my work and watching the M's and the Sox go into their usual midseason spirals and locker room blow-ups. Now work is lessening, and the weather is becoming a lot better! What's your opinion of the Sox this season compared to prev years?
   28. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:33 PM (#2867306)
The fact that Johan hasn't gone on a spree of domination in the NL has to be worrying for the Mets in comparison to how these other guys have done after moving over. Of course, Santana is usually better in the second half, but Santana's fastball has only been topping at like 92 MPH this year.
   29. ekogan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:35 PM (#2867313)

Theo's best non-trade ever
   30. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:36 PM (#2867316)
Agreed, ekogan. But I don't think even Farrell expected Lester to be this good this soon.

I throw stuff when they lose but don't get too crazy. Crowd violence on a global scale makes me laugh. It's hard with the hammers as no one can compete with the Liverpools - Man Utds - Arsenals and Chelsea's of this world. The 2006 FA Cup final lost hit me really hard mate - i almost gave up after that.

What's your opinion of the Sox this season compared to prev years?

I think they are built for the playoffs - just have to make them!!!

Bullpen is real concern as is the lack of hitting with RISP on the road.

Having fun as always supporting them (especially here) - whether they win or lose. Nothing occupies my mind anymore except the Red Sox (and the girls at home of course!)
   32. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2867326)
This team more than any I can recall (except maybe the 2002 version) seems to have a chance to win every game. Of course they have more than their fair share of blown leads and men left on base late in games.
   33. ekogan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2867336)
Pedroia falls to the RISP curse
   34. Chip Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2867337)
That AB right there is the story of the current RISP LOB drought: hottest hitter on the team has a 2-1 count, and yet he's reaching out of the strike zone at an off-speed pitch to pop it up.
   35. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2867339)
STAND UP - WORKS!!!
   36. Greg Franklin Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2867340)
Dustin demonstrated the RISP problem right there.

Thanks to RSN, I can't tell who's doing well or badly based on the crowd noise. The crowd is rooting for everyone!
   37. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2867341)
Drew got a bad read on that.
   38. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:53 PM (#2867344)
Harden no-hitting the Dbacks through 5.
   39. Chip Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:53 PM (#2867346)
Nothing more annoying than a good pitcher being owned by a mediocrity like Betancourt.
   40. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2867347)
Great play by Pedroia to get Ichiro on that ball.
   41. Chip Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:57 PM (#2867354)
Harden no-hitting the Dbacks through 5.

Unfortunately, the Cubs haven't scored him any runs yet off RJ.
   42. ekogan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:57 PM (#2867356)
Throwing while jumping - very Jeteresque by Pedroia on Ichiro's grounder
   43. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 10:57 PM (#2867357)
They're hitting him hard, but Chris Young is running down everything in CF.

Bloody Excellent

Ok, I was out of the room and I obviously missed something. Why is Masterson with the team?
   46. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:02 PM (#2867368)
WE're going to get burned after getting shut down through 4 innings by Washburn.

Aardsma DL
   48. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:03 PM (#2867376)
Aardsma DLed with a groin injury. It was obvious he was hurt, his last few appearances he was only hitting 91-92 with the FB.
   49. ekogan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:04 PM (#2867377)
Why is Masterson with the team?

You can't keep a good man down in AAA
   50. Chip Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:04 PM (#2867378)
Second time through the order they're actually doing worse against him. This offense is pathetic right now.

Somethings gotta turn around sooner or later

Maybe varitek will hit a home run?
   52. Marcel Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:06 PM (#2867384)
Ok, that makes sense. Whomever is supposed to be doing the Globe's blog today is slacking pretty bad.
   53. Chip Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:07 PM (#2867388)
And the 5 millionth 5-inning no-hitter ends. Shutout gone too. On a 1-2 pitch.

   57. Marcel Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:12 PM (#2867404)
I can deal with getting shoutout by a good pitcher. But Washburn? Really?
   58. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:12 PM (#2867405)
I think it's funny that the only out Kip Wells could get was striking out Andruw Jones.

Gift strike 2 to Lowrie.
   63. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2867421)

That wasn't a single, I gather. My knowledge of the catalog extends to "Fascination Street" and no further.

BTW, this Mariners "offense" is what PNW'ers have been seeing for months on end.

Lowrie made a great catch on Betancourt popup, but Ellsbury had it
   77. Dan Posted: July 21, 2008 at 11:52 PM (#2867496)
Apparently NESN doesn't think enough of Willie Bloomquist to even bother showing him bat. They cut to commercial immediately after Ichiro made the second out in the bottom of the 6th.

I'm bored out of my mind. The meeting has turmed out to be a complete waste of time.

I'm looking at Clement's hitting stats. He better be a helluva of a defensive mitt because those numbers are shameful.
   97. Marcel Posted: July 22, 2008 at 12:18 AM (#2867556)
He's really not much defensively. At this point the Mariner's suck so bad there's reason for them to not give him the at-bats. He's been absolutely dominant at AAA, it just hasn't translated into major league success yet.
   98. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 12:18 AM (#2867557)

It's called being a rookie. Rookie sucks.
Even those that eventually become all-stars and hall of famers very often suck in their rookie seasons.
We've been spoiled by Pedroia and Papelbon succeeding right away, but that's an exception to the rule.
Just look at Buchholz and Ellsbury
