First three innings - then the ninth - disaster

Great Ellsbury

When's the last time the Sox faced a knuckler?
   9. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2868880)
So are the switch hitters going to hit lefty or righty vs. Dickey?
   10. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2868904)
Daisuke has only allowed 1 run in his last 4 outings? I didn't realize he was on that kind of a run.
   11. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:32 PM (#2868934)
That Mets loss was the most painfu I've seen in a long time. The Reyes' brainlock and Taguchi somehow hitting a ball over Chavez's head made it so.
   12. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:33 PM (#2868937)
Great baserunning by Lowrie there.

Take 'em anyway you can get 'em, Tek. You're on a hot streak!

Shitty AB by Ellsbury.

JACOBY - YOU ARE KILLING ME!!

Way to make the sacrifice worthwhile, Ellsbury.

God he's sucking.
   17. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:36 PM (#2868946)
Watching the Mets blow games is so amusing though.
   18. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:36 PM (#2868947)
Plus I like Blanton, so it was good to see him not hung with the loss in his debut for the Phillies.
   19. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:40 PM (#2868959)
That's bizarre. Clement shoved the net behind home plate with his throwing hand when the foul popup was unreachable behind it, and shoved it so far that it actually glanced off his thumb on the way down and injured him.
   20. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2868962)
Well that was a big ugly load of fail.
   21. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:50 PM (#2868975)
Just a bit under that one, Manny.
   22. kevin Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2868978)
Jeez, Ekogan was right. There were explosions on 2 buses here yesterday. 2 dead and several wounded.

I'm not watching. How's the Diceman look?
   23. konaforever Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2868979)
Daisuke is dealing!
   24. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:52 PM (#2868980)
Daisuke looks great. He's challenging hitters (not that the Seattle lineup really has anyone to be afraid of).
   25. kevin Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2868982)
18-24 pitches for strikes. Not like him at all.

But I like it.
   26. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2868983)
He's got good movement on his pitches, but the hacktastic Mariners are swinging and missing at a ton of stuff out of the strike zone. Against a patient team we could just as easily be complaining about him nibbling.

I'm more concerned about the offense. They're going to regret failing to convert that first and second, no outs into anything, aren't they?
   27. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:57 PM (#2868986)
Lowrie is ####### awesome from what I have seen
   28. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:58 PM (#2868987)
Here's the Matsuzaka that can't find the plate.
   29. kevin Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:58 PM (#2868990)
Why, Phil? Offensively or defensively?
   30. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:00 PM (#2868992)
Lowrie has looked good at the plate and in the field.
   31. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:00 PM (#2868993)
I'm going to be generous and say he was pitching around Ichiro with two outs, since he is one of the few guys in the lineup who can hurt you.
   32. kevin Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:01 PM (#2868994)
Yeah, but what's the really the point of pitching around him? He isn't going to go yard on you so you may as well challenge him. Even if he gets on, you can get the next guy out anyway.
   33. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:02 PM (#2868995)
Has Lugo hit it that far opposite field this year?
   34. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:03 PM (#2868996)
Why, Phil? Offensively or defensively?

he made a great over the shoulder catch again today - no way Lugo makes that - no way
   35. kevin Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:04 PM (#2868997)
You're beating a dead horse, Phil. We all know Lowrie buries Lugo.
   36. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:04 PM (#2868998)
Great. They've let Dickey settle in.
   37. kevin Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:05 PM (#2868999)
Is Dickey throwing all knuckleballs or is he mixing in "the thang" some?
   38. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:05 PM (#2869000)
You're beating a dead horse, Phil. We all know Lowrie buries Lugo.

Hope a few others are starting to see - doesn't seem like it.
   39. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:06 PM (#2869002)
He's mixing pitches. Drew's HR was off a 3-2 fastball.
   40. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:08 PM (#2869004)
Apparently he's going to nibble to Ichiro and Ibañez and challenge everyone else.
   41. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:11 PM (#2869010)
Sweet, 0-2 to 3-2 vs the worst hitter in the league
   42. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:11 PM (#2869011)
0-2 to 3-2 on Vidro is an embarrassment.
   43. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:12 PM (#2869014)
Not a good feed by Pedroia.
   44. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:12 PM (#2869015)
Pedroia made that way uglier than it needed to be.

   48. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2869028)
that was smashed by pedsy
   49. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2869029)
And Pedroia doesn't give him a chance.

Squander time!
   50. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2869030)
That will do, Drew.
   51. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2869032)
Good job with the 0-2 pitch, J.D.
   52. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:22 PM (#2869037)
Odds that Lowell pops up?
   53. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:22 PM (#2869038)
If I were Lowell I would have swung 3-0 on an 84 mph straight fastball.
   54. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:22 PM (#2869039)
That was a crap call on the 3-1
   55. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:23 PM (#2869041)
Ibañez is so bad in left field.
   56. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:23 PM (#2869042)
Odds that Lowell pops up?

Nil, I tell you!

Actually, I was assuming the DP. You were being too generous, I thought, given his road slump.
   57. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:24 PM (#2869044)
Good move by Manny, that bounced right back to Johjima.

I had no hope either - he's looked terrible
   59. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:28 PM (#2869048)
I am a fan of Lowrie, and not just because of the stark contrast with Lugo and Cora.
   60. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:28 PM (#2869050)
Good job Jed.

Another ball driven in the air to the outfield. He's had more on this trip than Lugo has had all season.

That lefty swing of his is also very Fenway-friendly - that ball's probably off the wall at home.
   61. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:28 PM (#2869051)
Nice work Jed
   62. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:29 PM (#2869052)
Both balls he hit to LF tonight are doubles in Fenway.
   63. kevin Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:29 PM (#2869053)
No way Lugo gets the sac f there.
   64. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:29 PM (#2869054)

And lefty is his weaker side, right?

Safe flight mate
   67. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:33 PM (#2869059)
I'm not sure which side is supposed to be his strong side. Looking at his 2008 AAA splits, he hit for better average and walked more as a lefty, but hit for more power right-handed.
   68. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:38 PM (#2869062)
Sox Prospects offers Carlos Guillen as a comp, which makes a lot of sense to me: solid switchhitter who is more offense than defense at short without being a superstar, but acquits himself well in the field and can play multiple postions. He'd be a god in Boston if they got a Guillen-type career out of him.

I want to see how lowrie is supposed to have less range than Lugo btw>???

thats shits me - Lugo would be better off in a wheelchair out there to get more range
   70. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:39 PM (#2869065)
Whether his glove is average or slightly below average at SS, it certainly appears to be adequate to play there. I could live with a Pedroia - Lowrie double play pair for the next 5 years.
   71. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:40 PM (#2869067)
Took a great play to get Ellsbury - I want to see him do it more often
   72. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:41 PM (#2869069)
I think Ellsbury should bunt any time the third baseman isn't playing in on the grass.

Thats rare
   77. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:46 PM (#2869083)
That wasn't even nibbling. Both times when he's walked him, he was missing badly on everything, like he was trying to be perfect and overthrowing.

Or he'll strike out Ibañez.
   83. Chip Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:51 PM (#2869093)
That was a great, great changeup/splitter/gyroball to get strike two on Ibanez.

And an even better pitch to get strike three.
   84. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:52 PM (#2869094)
Agreed Chip on both.

Not that Orel Hershiser is ready to lose any sleep over his record being threatened.

Wasn't a strike on Amica Zone, but had insane movement breaking back toward the corner that caused the ump to call it.
   89. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 11:57 PM (#2869107)
Why the hell would you leave Dickey in to start the inning with that many pitches if you're just going to pull him when he gives up a groundball single?

May I ask why the #### Vidro is hitting cleanup for a Major League Baseball team? Somebody humor me!
   92. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 12:01 AM (#2869112)
Because he's protecting Ibañez so that guys have to pitch to Raul. At least that's Riggleman's explanation.
   93. BeanoCook Posted: July 23, 2008 at 12:03 AM (#2869116)
Thank you Dan, I've heard nothing to support the reasoning why a guy with a .585 OPS is hitting cleanup in the Majors in late July.

Barry Bonds and Jeff Burris are asking the same question.
   95. BeanoCook Posted: July 23, 2008 at 12:07 AM (#2869119)
I can only guess the Mariners have provided Riggleman with scouting reports from 1999. Reminds me of the time we bombed the Chinese Embassy in the Balkans during the war in Kosovo (in 1999) because the CIA had old maps from 1994. CIA budget cuts.
   96. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 12:08 AM (#2869120)
That was one hell of a slow turn by Lopez. Barely got Youkilis.

it gets ugly at USS Mariner

The sad thing is that they've had midseason turnover at both GM and manager, and yet the use of Vidro hasn't changed a whit. If I were a USS Mariner regular, I'd be as apopletic as they are.
