No Manny today, so Casey is starting at DH. Presumably just a scheduled day off.

And the Mariners are starting Beltre at SS (!?).
   2. mopar Posted: July 23, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2869613)
Maybe they're showcasing Beltre for the Yankees
   3. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 03:08 PM (#2869622)
Apparently it's not a scheduled day off:

Manny Ramirez was scratched from Wednesday's lineup with soreness in his right knee.
The pain developed overnight, and manager Terry Francona said he wasn't notified of anything after Thursday's game. "He showed up this morning, I wasn't ready for that," Francona said. "He said his right knee hurts." Jacob Ellsbury will shift over to left and Coco Crisp will get the start in center. Ramirez is day-to-day.

From Rotoworld.
   4. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:17 PM (#2869728)
Manny must have stepped off the curb wrong when he jaywalked.

Is there a bigger mismatch than Buchholz (Current Version) vs. Hernandez?
   5. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2869755)
The speedy Pedroia steals second!
   6. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:46 PM (#2869763)
Squander already.
   7. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2869765)
Hernandez walks two straight guys, and Youkilis and Lowell take 2 and 1 pitch, respectively, to make outs.
   8. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2869769)
Caught Ichiro leaning.
   9. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2869770)
Count leverage WASTED!

Well that helped.
   10. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:52 PM (#2869772)
Trying his best to walk the unwalkable Lopez.
   11. konaforever Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:53 PM (#2869775)
Come on Buchy. Make us a believer today!
   12. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:56 PM (#2869779)
Got away with a bit of a hanger there on strike three to Ibanez, but the fact that he didn't get hammered in the first inning is a plus compared to recent starts.
   13. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:59 PM (#2869783)
Lowrie is good.
   14. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 04:59 PM (#2869784)
Speaking of hanging breaking balls ...
   15. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:00 PM (#2869786)
I just hope this storm doesn't knock out my power during the game.
   16. konaforever Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:01 PM (#2869790)
Lowrie is a million times the player Lugo is.
   17. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:02 PM (#2869791)
At least Tek hit it hard.
   18. konaforever Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:02 PM (#2869792)
I like that they moved up Lowrie to 7th spot.
   19. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:07 PM (#2869799)
OK, walking ANY Mariner is bad, but walking Vidro is worse.

Putting on the leadoff batter in consecutive innings is also discouraging.
   20. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:08 PM (#2869803)
6 straight balls?
   21. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2869818)
You have to imagine that Crisp will run off of Hernandez.
   22. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2869819)
Morning
   23. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2869820)
It's official: Ellsbury sucks, and is sucking more all the time.
   24. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2869822)
King Felix burned again by a hanging slider. Lowrie got him on a similar pitch up in the zone.
   25. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:21 PM (#2869824)
####### Ichiro
   26. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:21 PM (#2869825)
####.
   27. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2869827)
Drew didn't think he got as much of that as he did.
   28. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2869828)
Jesus Christ - are you kidding?

Ichiro is a pain in the ass
   29. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2869831)
Wow - Ichiro taketh, and Ichiro giveth.
   30. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2869832)
At least Ichiro gave back a run on that.
   31. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2869833)
Couldn't catch that one could you?
   32. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:24 PM (#2869836)
Nice hitting by Youks. Super annoying 0-2 hit if you're a Mariner fan.
   33. mopar Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2869841)
Ellsbury's OBP and SLG have finally reached my season expectations for him but I'm afraid I might have been too optimistic
   34. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:30 PM (#2869844)
He'll turn it around mopar
   35. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:31 PM (#2869846)
He looks as horrible as Pedroia did in the depths of his slump earlier this season, so hopefully he too has a rebound in him, although I won't expect it to be as dramatic as the little hobbit's.
   36. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:31 PM (#2869847)
How's Clay been?
   37. mopar Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2869849)
He should, he did have a similarly gnarly slump at Pawtucket last year if I recall
   38. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2869850)
He looked out
   39. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:33 PM (#2869852)
Uh, he was out.
   40. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:33 PM (#2869851)
clearly out
   41. plink Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:34 PM (#2869853)
Definitely out. Nice play, but it probably would have been easier if he hadn't fallen.
   42. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2869857)
Makeup call.
   43. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:38 PM (#2869858)
Ichiros was closer than the other one
   44. mopar Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:38 PM (#2869859)
Willie Bloomquist is incredible - 35 hits this year, 34 of them singles
   45. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:38 PM (#2869860)
Looks like a make up call - agree Chip
   46. plink Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:39 PM (#2869861)
Make-up call? Eh, probably out.
   47. plink Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:39 PM (#2869863)
2 cokes!?
   48. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:42 PM (#2869866)
Why would any non contending (let alone contending ) team acquire Randy Wolf?
   49. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:43 PM (#2869867)
I agree, he was probably out, so it wasn't a makeup - replay showed that Ichiro's foot didn't land on the front of the bag but the middle of it, which is what cost him.
   50. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:45 PM (#2869868)
Which makes the miss on Mohiar that much worse (Seinfeld episode stuck in my head)
   51. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:45 PM (#2869870)
Why won't loser Tek just bat righty?
   52. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2869871)
Excellent inning there by the Boston Mariners - 6 pitches - awesome
   53. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:50 PM (#2869872)
####### Vidro - suck a hack - that could be his last hit for the week
   54. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2869873)
Generous call for strike 3 to Beltre.
   55. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:52 PM (#2869874)
Great pitch to get Beltre
   56. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:53 PM (#2869875)
I thought it was ok Dan - I must have tears in my eyes still after the homer
   57. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:54 PM (#2869877)
Nice comeback.
   58. Dingbat Charlie Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2869878)
jeremy reed.. the M's are like some campy, John Waters-esque collection of washups and failed prospects.
   59. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2869879)
Is it me or does Lowell throw to 2nd on that play far more often than the typical third baseman?
   60. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2869880)
Stays away from the bug inning - keep it up Clay
   61. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:56 PM (#2869882)
Dan - I've noticed that heaps as well - maybe Pedroia is really good at getting into position early
   62. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2869883)
I would ask Marlins fans if he did that there as well, but there are none...
   63. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:58 PM (#2869884)
Ellsbury should bunt when he leads an inning off
   64. plink Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:59 PM (#2869887)
Agreed, Dan.
   65. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:00 PM (#2869890)
Watching this game with the two best behaved 9 month old Red Sox twins on the planet - hope they keep it up - they know its a big game today.
   66. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:01 PM (#2869891)
I'm ####### sick of Brett Favre
   67. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:02 PM (#2869892)
I don't really think it's a big game today honestly Phil. Red Sox play at home after this as Tampa goes on the road. The lead is about to shift back to a ~2 game lead for us.
   68. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2869894)
Also TB has 37 road games and 25 home games left.
   69. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2869895)
Alexi Casilla is ####### idiot
   70. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:05 PM (#2869898)
I think it is a big game as we can finish the road trip at 3-3. I like our future schedule as well
   71. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:05 PM (#2869899)
Alexi Casilla is ####### idiot

I don't want to hear any more paeans to the Twins smallball, "we do the fundamentals right" style. They played with their heads up their butts that whole series.
   72. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2869900)
   73. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2869902)
That IS really strange, I meant to say.
   74. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2869903)
Them and Oakland have thrown in the towel this week - enough to give you shits
   75. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2869904)
Lowrie looks at least average at SS.
   76. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:09 PM (#2869905)
Great stuff Jed

That is the strangest thing I will see today - Dan
   77. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:11 PM (#2869909)
So assuming Ortiz is activated for Friday, I guess the lineup will probably be:

2B Pedroia
1B Youkilis
DH Ortiz
LF Ramirez
RF Drew
3B Lowell
SS Lowrie
C Varitek
CF Ellsbury
   78. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:12 PM (#2869910)
Squander time!
   79. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:15 PM (#2869913)
It seems like Orsillo actually follows baseball other than the Red Sox, which is nice.
   80. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:15 PM (#2869914)
Super squander time!
   81. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:15 PM (#2869915)
Good at bat from the Mayor
   82. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:16 PM (#2869916)
Time for a grand slam, Jed.
   83. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:17 PM (#2869917)
Take the 3-1 Kid
   84. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:17 PM (#2869919)
The home run he hit in Minnesota was right-handed, right?
   85. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:19 PM (#2869922)
Looked like he held up to me, but who the hell ever really knows.
   86. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:20 PM (#2869924)
####.

Squander coming ...
   87. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:20 PM (#2869925)
####### tek - great
   88. plink Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:20 PM (#2869926)
Eh, he went. Now we get Tek with the bases loaded. Goody.
   89. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:20 PM (#2869927)
Awful.
   90. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:20 PM (#2869928)
What are you swinging at?
   91. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:21 PM (#2869929)
TAKE CRISP
   92. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:21 PM (#2869930)
At least Lowrie put up a fight. Sheesh, that was pathetic.
   93. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:21 PM (#2869931)
TAKE AGAIN CRISP
   94. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:21 PM (#2869933)
TAKE!
   95. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:22 PM (#2869934)
TAKE AGAIN, and if its a strike TAKE AGAIN
   96. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:22 PM (#2869935)
Varitek is a ####### joke - who allows him to come out swinging like that?? This is a joke
   97. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:22 PM (#2869936)
Well at least we got one run. But that's sad for Felix, walking Crisp to push a run across.
   98. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:22 PM (#2869938)
Ouch.

Big slumpbusting opportunity for Ellsbury.
   99. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:24 PM (#2869939)
Not looking good for Jacoby.
   100. Chip Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:24 PM (#2869941)
Completely overmatched again when pounded inside.
