Paul Byrd, in Yankee Stadium II:

.273 .331 .539 .870

Yikes! Not encouraging at all, no?

Sidney "Fat Sid Redux" Pontoon:

.258 .336 .402 .738

Clearly, the Red Sox have absolutely no chance. Bet a bundle(the line is NYY's even-6).

He's not fat he's big-boned

When's Lowell back? I'm ####### sick of the sight of Cora in this lineup
   4. jjdnyc Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:06 PM (#2919172)
Hey cuz. Sox will smack Sidney around. Byrd will shock the world.

Papi!

Sox better make this fat ###### pay - he's got nothing
   7. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2919186)
How the hell can you strike out to that?
   8. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2919187)
Youks missed 4 batting practice balls
   9. Fancy Pants Handle Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2919188)
Classic case of overestimating his opponent...
   10. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2919189)
I wish I could hear what Michael Kay has to say about Bay now.
   11. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2919191)
All day every day - jason Bay - stick it Kay!!

Great AB by Lowrie.
   13. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:22 PM (#2919202)
Not sure how I feel about that send.
   14. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2919203)
Jesus - how did Bay not score there?

terrible camera work by Yes
   15. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2919204)
I don't mind the send with Cora on deck.
   16. Fancy Pants Handle Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2919205)
With Cora and Crisp up next, I'm OK with that send actually...
   17. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2919206)
Hard ground ball right to Abreu. Pretty much only Crisp or Ellsbury scores on that.
   18. jjdnyc Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2919207)
LIke to see a replay that actually showed the runner. I thought he stumbled or hesitated in the split second he was on camera...

Ball was hard hit - I was not used to that from Tek

Damon breaks more bats than anyone in the history of baseball.

Agree with 18 - coming around third it seemed
   22. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2919214)
0-2 to 3-2? Who does he think he is, Dice-K?
   23. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2919215)
Crazy gift call.
   24. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2919219)
Terrible call to get Damon there - gotta be fair - that was a joke
   25. mopar Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2919220)
Bay might not be fast but if you drop a phonograph needle on his nipple it plays the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds"
   26. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2919223)
Ponson got some gifts in the first, according to Amica Zone. The strike one to Lowrie, for example, was off the outside corner. Very similar to the Damon strike three.
   27. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2919224)
Ellsbury!

Sloop Jay B?
   29. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2919230)
Byrd normally is no better than mediocre. But a Byrd who walks people? That's a sucky pitcher.
   30. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2919231)
As he now proves.
   31. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2919233)
Two Ks AND a walk in the same inning for Byrd? The night gets weird early.
   32. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2919239)
His fat body provided a benefit.
   33. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2919240)
I just hope we don't see Kotsay in CF with Ellsbury in RF when the opposite is 300% better.
   34. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2919244)
Kotsay's with the team but not on the active roster? Why wasn't Thurston optioned back yet?
   35. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2919252)
0-2 meatball to Nady. Luckily an at-em ball.
   36. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2919253)
I thought Thurston was DFA'd because he was out of options. Confusingly, however, they said on the pre-game he had been sent to Pawtucket.
   37. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:48 PM (#2919254)
Oh, so Kotsay was activated? If so, why isn't he in the lineup? Hell, I'd even like to see him at first base while Casey is down over starting Cora.
   38. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2919256)
The Mets and their fans are going to be disappointed when Santana's ERA regresses to match his declining peripheral stats.
   39. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2919258)
I heard no explanation for keeping him out of the lineup tonight, but didn't catch all of the normal sitdown with the Globe's Amalie Benjamin, which is where we probably would have gotten Tito's lineup explanation, however lame it might be.
   40. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2919259)
I didn't see any of the pre-game stuff myself.
   41. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2919264)
At least the Orioles are beating the White Sox. Not that I expect it to last with Liz pitching and all....
   42. Fancy Pants Handle Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2919265)
The Mets and their fans are going to be disappointed when Santana's ERA regresses to match his declining peripheral stats.

Not as long as his W-L record also regresses to match his peripheral stats.
   43. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:54 PM (#2919270)
Pedroia slips to 6-7 against Ponson.
   44. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2919272)
Interesting defensive alignment vs. Ortiz. Huge hole to the right of second.
   45. Fancy Pants Handle Posted: August 27, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2919274)
Beckett is supposed to be back Friday btw
   46. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2919280)
Why the #### are you trying to pull a sinkerball pitcher, Youks?

Two scoreless innings by Ponson has to be considered a huge momentum boost for the Yankees.

And hasn't Beckett been slated for Friday for several days now? That was re-confirmed yesterday by Francona after he threw a side session.
   47. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2919287)
At least Byrd has settled into a groove.
   48. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2919288)
I really don't need all these flashbacks, even if they are Sox highlights.
   49. Fancy Pants Handle Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2919299)
I thought the official word was that they were hoping Beckett would start friday, but wanted to wait and see till after the side session to make a commitment.
   50. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2919300)
And they made the comment yesterday. :P
   51. mopar Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2919303)
It's Paul Byrd's world, the rest of you can pick at the carcass of the Yankees when he's finished with them
   52. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2919307)
Nice approach Jed.

Time to tack on.
   53. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2919311)
Does that count as a squander?
   54. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2919314)
Carlos Peña hits the ball as hard as anyone.
   55. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2919317)
Semi-squander.

Two pretty unimpressive ABs. Varitek wastes count leverage by trying to pull an outside pitch, and Cora also tries to pull him. This after Lowrie has shown the results if you take him to the opposite field. Dumb.
   56. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2919319)
Fat pitch.
   57. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2919332)
Hank Steinbrenner looks like his hot dog didn't agree with him.
   58. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2919336)
Another walk? WTF?

He got burned the last time he did this.
   59. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2919340)
..and almost got burned there.
   60. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2919343)
####
   61. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2919346)
Bagginses needs to grow.

0-2 count wasted because of Varitek's continued and inexplicable affection for the standup fastball. Two of them in that AB alone.
   62. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2919348)
How did pedroia miss that?
   63. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2919349)
Didn't Cano K on a standup fastball in his first AB?
   64. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2919361)
Pedroia teaches the hanging slider a little lesson
   65. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2919363)
Alright Youks, Grand Slam time!
   66. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2919364)
Don't be dumb, Youks.
   67. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2919365)
Youks with a chance here - hope he has forgotten about his first two at bats
   68. Matt Waters Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2919367)
The sooner I don't have to look at Sidney Ponson anymore, the better.
   69. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2919368)
Youkilis is getting pull-happy.
   70. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2919370)
Bay grand slam?
   71. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2919371)
Remy's right: stupidly tried to pull an outside pitch on the first 3-2 that he normally takes to right. He's lucky he didn't hit into the inning ending DP.

Ponson bails him out in the end, fortunately.
   72. Matt Waters Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2919375)
I'm so glad I only have to watch another month of this ####.
   73. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2919376)
That'll do.

And another #### you to Michael Kay.

For ####'s sake, not another walk after they gave you the lead back.
   77. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2919401)
Same difference. On top of the walks, way too many deep counts for a guy who's supposed to be a strike thrower.
   78. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:58 PM (#2919411)
One more inning for Byrd?
   79. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 08:58 PM (#2919413)
Two doubles, and they boo him after his first out.
   80. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2919418)
Why would you swing at that pitch on a 2-0 count, Jason?
   81. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2919421)
Lefty Tek back to his normal suck. That was an awful swing to take at a fastball in a 2-0 count.
   82. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2919424)
Another 2-0 count wasted with weak contact.
   83. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2919426)
Bill C. is starting his speech, for those interested.
   84. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2919438)
Nicely played by Lowrie.
   85. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2919444)
Strikes please, strike thrower.
   86. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2919452)
Amica says gift call but it looked good to me, honestly.
   87. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2919455)
Gutsy move by Maddon to leave Garza in to face Wells with the tying run on first and 110 pitches.
   88. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2919459)
Ugly hack, Dusty.
   89. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2919470)
MDC couldn't even throw strikes with a 4 run lead, and now he's in with a 2 run lead?

I'm not feeling it.

can mdc be effective by accident just once?
   92. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2919481)
He's not feeling it, either.

If he walks the unwalkable Cano, Tito needs to pull him immediately.
   93. jjdnyc Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2919485)
A strikeout?!!!! Can I have some more, please, sir?
   94. Chip Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2919486)
Bailed out by Cano, who appeared to ##### at the umpire that he only swung because of the earlier called strike on the outside corner.
   95. jjdnyc Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2919491)
This guy is also very hard to walk...Castiglione reports 9 walks in 120 at bats last year...
   96. jjdnyc Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2919498)
no walks too much to hope for?
   97. Dan Posted: August 27, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2919500)
Masterson for the 8th or Okajima? I'd go with Masterson.

OK, nice comeback with some good strikes in the Damon AB after falling behind, MDC.

But enough with the falling behind 3-0.
