This game is going to be absolutely huge for the outcome of the series. If the Sox can take one of these first two games in Anaheim, it's their series to lose. And this is the better matchup to try and grab a win.

Stuff I want to see in this game:
A great pitching duel that makes the game end by 12:30

The power of Thundersticks solve the energy crisis

Manny Ramirez, having missed the flight to Chicago, walks on the field wearing a Red Sox uniform until he is attacked by the Rally Monkey

Jon Lester no-hitter footage

K-Rod vs. Papi, 9th inning, two outs, man on second, Angels up 3-2

Here come those Santa Ana winds again...
   4. Darren Posted: October 01, 2008 at 06:33 PM (#2963182)
The old cliche is that winning 1 of 2 on the road "steals" homefield. But the expected outcome of any 2 games between two good teams, even with home-field, is 1 win for each. The difference in this series is that Boston is far better at home than on the road, while LAA is exactly even h/r. So, as Dan said, taking 1 of 2 on the road would be big for Boston.

K-Rod vs. Papi, 9th inning, two outs, man on second, Angels up 3-2

You like intentional walks?

Which one of you guys was all into the Pixies? Phil?
   6. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2963315)
Sweet, we have a good lineup for tonight too:

CF Ellsbury
2B Pedroia
DH Ortiz
1B Youkilis
RF Drew
LF Bay
3B Lowell
SS Lowrie
C Varitek

Love that batting order, pretty close to ideal.
   7. Darren Posted: October 01, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2963386)
Drop Ellsbury to 9, move up Pedroia 1 spot, Youks 2 and Bay 2 and you've got something.

That's me (though I am sure a lot of the other guys here are HUGE fans) - between them - the Modern Lovers, the Red Sox and Mission of Burma - that city makes me giddy...
   9. Darren Posted: October 01, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2963572)
I'm developing an unhealthy obsession with some of their songs... one in particular. I'll have to check out your other faves.

Phil, do you happen to know a good place to watch the games in Sydney? I'm a Sox fan who has been lurking here for years, but just moved to Sydney from NYC.

Oh, God. Chip Caray and his unholy eyebrows.
   12. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:02 PM (#2963846)
I've migrated over with Gamingboy. Maybe we can make the Red Sox fans angry, too, even though I actually want the Cubs/Red Sox World Series.
   13. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2963848)
I just learned what Lassus meant the other day from the brief etymological bit at the end of a dictionary definition.

Bon Jovi ####### sucks!
   15. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:05 PM (#2963851)
Jonathan Richman is such a California icon now I had to look up that he started with that band in Boston.
   16. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:06 PM (#2963853)
Dan, if I may: huh?
   17. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:08 PM (#2963855)
lassitude |ˈlasəˌt(y)oōd|
noun
a state of physical or mental weariness; lack of energy : she was overcome by lassitude and retired to bed | a patient complaining of lassitude and inability to concentrate.
ORIGIN late Middle English : from French, from Latin lassitudo, from lassus ‘tired.’
   18. Royce Rings Heath's Bell Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:08 PM (#2963859)
Thanks, Chip. REAL playable for Matthews.

"It's playable for Matthews"

Good start, Chip!

Also:

ELLSBURY!!!!

That being said, Yay Jacoby!

Nice job advancing the runner, PEDROIA.

Two cokes!
   25. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2963869)
I blame Pedroia for using his "move the runner up" swing rather than his regular one.
   26. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2963870)
Squanderrific start.
   27. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2963871)
SQUANDER!
   28. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2963872)
Start by wasting a leadoff double. Excellent.
   29. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2963874)
That was disappointing, Youkilis. I was told you were clutch.
   30. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2963878)
There couldn't have been three more horrible ABs following the double. 7 pitches total to make three outs. Idiotic.

Game time temperature of 82F. Gotta love it.

I expect Ken Rosenthal to break in with the announcement of AJ Burnett opting out of his contract any second now
   33. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#2963884)
Those stats they just posted for Lester were...entirely wrong.

Hey guys.
   35. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#2963886)
What were they, BIff? I wasn't paying attention.
   36. Why do you build Fly up, buttercup? Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2963888)
God, Chip Carray is laughably horrible. I'm willing to give Buck a pass, because I like his work on Baseball This Morning, but Chip is going to drive me to drink.

I was going to drink anyway, but still.
   37. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2963889)
I'm not sure I'd say that Lester has a great change up, Buck.

Also, I apologize for making a "drive me to drink" joke with a Caray. I really didn't mean it to be a reference to their...history.
   42. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2963896)
That hung up for a long time. Surprised Ellsbury didn't make a play on it. He backed off at the last moment from diving.
   43. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2963897)
What were they, BIff? I wasn't paying attention.

His record was 12-3, his games started were 24, his ERA was 3.75. That's all I remember.

Looked like they were shading Teixeira pretty heavily to pull.

Oh, those are Lackey's stats.

Here comes a JD Drew home run.

I have a feeling "we provide ... leverage" is going to be a running joke this postseason
   58. Why do you build Fly up, buttercup? Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:27 PM (#2963913)
Sleep before the end of the game? Unless this turns into Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS, I'm in it till the end. What do I have to do tomorrow? Work?
   59. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2963914)
Don't know where that curve missed.
   60. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2963917)
Well, at least the grounder to second was well struck.
   61. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2963920)
Good AB from Bay so far.
   62. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2963922)
Not such a good end though.
   63. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2963923)
I don't recall Lackey throwing this many 2-seam fastballs before.
   64. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2963924)
I wish I possessed more lassitude.

I don't like this broadcast team that much. Darling makes Gwynn a lot more listenable. Who was the first game's broadcast team, I missed it?
   65. PJ Martinez Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:31 PM (#2963925)
Lackey's one of the more underrated pitchers at the moment, isn't he?
   66. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:31 PM (#2963927)
I work early. I'm going to try to make it though. I'll sleepwalk through work if I need to.
   67. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:32 PM (#2963928)
Who was the first game's broadcast team, I missed it?

Brian Anderson, John Smoltz, and Joe Simpson, I believe.

ESPN's radio crew was Michael Kay and Steve Phillips though (I listened to the first couple innings in my car on the way home).
   68. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:32 PM (#2963929)
Who was the first game's broadcast team, I missed it?

Simpson, Smoltz and the PBP guy from the Brewers.
   69. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:32 PM (#2963930)
And now Sager, who might be my least favorite person on earth to watch and listen to.
   70. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:34 PM (#2963931)
Lackey's painting right now. This isn't a good start.
   71. JJ1986 Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:34 PM (#2963932)
Brian Anderson

Former DBacks pitcher Brian Anderson?
   72. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:34 PM (#2963933)
Kay and Phillips? That's kind of unfathomable to imagine. I mean, really.
   73. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:34 PM (#2963934)
Sager and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoats give me nausea.
   74. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:35 PM (#2963935)
Could you stop falling behind nearly every hitter Lester? I will enjoy this game more if you do.
   75. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:35 PM (#2963936)
GAH! TOO BRIGHT!
   76. Why do you build Fly up, buttercup? Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:35 PM (#2963937)
Craig Sager is reporting live from 1972.
   77. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:36 PM (#2963938)
Nicely played by Varitek.
   78. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:37 PM (#2963939)
Buck Martinez is actually not as bad so far as I anticipated.
   79. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2963941)
According to Sager, Lester was diagnosed with "lymph noma" last year. Must be a new form of cancer we're never heard of.
   80. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2963942)
Much better inning.
   81. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2963943)
Lester is settling in nicely too. Shaping up to be a serious pitching duel.
   82. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2963944)
That's better, Jon.
   83. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2963945)
What a stupidass commercial. No ####, Hong Kong is in China?
   84. PJ Martinez Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2963946)
Is Craig Sager the guy whose outfit Kevin Garnett dissed in a postgame interview? Because that was pretty funny. "Retro is a look, man. You can't just grab anything out of the closet."
   85. Bowling Baseball Fan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:41 PM (#2963947)
Somebody should really tell Sager they are not laughing with him when he walks in with those suits on.
   86. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2963948)
I'll take the HBP.
   87. Why do you build Fly up, buttercup? Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2963949)
How does Tim Tschida get assigned to a Red Sox playoff game?
   88. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2963950)
Is Lackey the biggest mouth breather to ever take the mound? I think so.
   89. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2963951)
"Disappointing year average-wise for Varitek"

Yeah, that's...one way of putting it.
   90. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2963952)
I don't mind the idea of the bunt here, but Varitek doesn't ####### know how to bunt.
   91. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:43 PM (#2963953)
Varitek CRUSHED that one.
   92. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:43 PM (#2963954)
Is Lackey the biggest mouth breather to ever take the mound? I think so.

Yes.
   93. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2963955)
Lackey has bailed himself out twice now with plays on balls back through the box. Don't recall him being that good a fielder.
   94. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2963957)
Steal second.
   95. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2963958)
cool flip.

   97. Dan Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2963961)
STEAL
   98. Chip Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2963962)
The glove flip was totally unnecessary, wasn't it? Risk-reward ratio there didn't seem to justify it - little chance of getting Ellsbury on the back end of a high bouncer like that.
   99. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 01, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2963963)
It looked cool.
