Yeah, that second pitch wasn't that good a call either.

2 on, no out.

Can we get Cora up in the pen please?

"Youkilis froze there?" What role did Youkilis play in that pitch exactly?

I seriously think that after 5.5 hours and 450 pitches, the ump is going to be performing similarly to if he's had five beers. Get him out of there, just like surgeons who think they can stay awake and alert for 36 hours.
   1705. Miko Supports Shane's Spam Habit Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:30 AM (#2979635)
what a thing to do to Timlin. Could have been Byrd here.
   1706. tfbg9 Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:30 AM (#2979636)
Pathetic. I wish Cappy was there still. He'd get those calls!
1707. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:30 AM (#2979637)
Well, the game still turns on how Bartlett executes the bunt and how the Sox execute against the bunt.

Good first pitch.
   1708. Chip Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:30 AM (#2979638)
You should have retired after last year, Mike.
   1709. Dan Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:30 AM (#2979639)
Mike Timlin wasn't a corpse when he was in this situation many times before though, Buck.

Lassus--you are full of sh1t.

Hey: that's enough from you with the name calling, got it?

You can walk on a pitch where you're showing bunt as the pitch enters the catcher's glove?
1713. Theo Epstein Apologists (Hanley Ramirez Chapter) Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:31 AM (#2979643)
I really can't believe Tito expected any other outcome than this... Timlin is an atrocious, horrific, patently offensive excuse for a major leauge pithcer.
   1714. Gamingboy Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:31 AM (#2979644)
Mike Timlin will retire.... when Jamie Moyer does.
   1715. ekogan Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:31 AM (#2979645)
Tito has made two mistakes: letting Beckett pitch the 5th and using Timlin. If he'd just used Byrd in either case, the Red Sox win this game.
   1716. Miko Supports Shane's Spam Habit Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:31 AM (#2979646)
He is a corpse on the roster, though, which doesn't say great things.

1721. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:32 AM (#2979652)
That was a 50/50 call on the check swing.
   1722. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:32 AM (#2979653)
Youkilis froze because he was playing in on the bunt and the batter was swinging away. It was a valid comment.

AWESOME hit and run there! That was sweetly done.

and it screws up a good one like tonight's.
   1745. Dan Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:35 AM (#2979676)
Of course, even if he somehow gets Upton, then he's facing Peña in a rematch of the game at Fenway in September.

1771. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:37 AM (#2979702)
Great game.

Drew did a really poor job of lining that one up, but I don't know if it would have made a difference.

And Timlin pitched pretty well, not all that dissimilar to Lopez in ALDS Game 3.

The fault is on Beckett, the front office and Tito for trusting in Beckett to begin the game, and Tito for pitching Beckett in the 5th.

It reminded me of a Braves/Astros playoff game in 04 where Drew made a catch in foul territory and then failed to throw the runner out at home. Mind you, this was a fair ball.

Don't forget the Home Plate ump when you assign blame.

   1789. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:42 AM (#2979720)
Holy freaking crap.

My friend and I both laughed our asses off when the ump called that pitch by Price a strike for the out, it was so clearly not a strike at all. Plus the Red Sox did get hosed on that non-call on the strike by Timlin. Still, the Rays have been brutalized often enough by atrocious calls in favor of the Sox over the years so I feel no sympathy.
   1790. tfbg9 Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:43 AM (#2979721)
The non-hook of Beckett was a serious head scratcher for sure. But not the
story of the game. The story of the game, for a Sox fan, was the injury related
ineffectiveness of Beckett. And the eventual loss by bullpen attrition.

   1794. tfbg9 Posted: October 12, 2008 at 01:45 AM (#2979725)
And Lassus, I apologize. Sorry, I wasn't trying to insult you. Just bust your balls,
because the ump was frustratijng me in a big ALCS ballgame.

But I can certainly see how you'd feel slighted. So, my bad. Take care. Hope you see this.

Good point.

And, really, credit to the Rays, they cashed in every opportunity that Beckett gave them, and they got great relief pitching. (I think Maddon's bullpen management was perfect.)

Eckersley and Reynolds both rip the decisions to keep Beckett and Kazmir in as long as they did, Ripken says he liked both. Make a note not to hire Cal as your next manager.
