I thought that the bird was the word?

Swings at ball four.
   503. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:09 PM (#2978403)
Is this camera angle that far off?

I think its the most "angled" in all of baseball.

Where in the hell did the 1-0 miss?
The home plate umpire (a guy I'm not familiar with, Sam Holbrook), has had an ATROCIOUS zone all game long. And the terrifying thing is that postseason umpires are supposed to be the ones that proved themselves during the regular season.
   505. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:09 PM (#2978405)
Start Lowrie? My god, Martinez is to tactics as Caray is to flyballs.

Best possible outcome!

Walk!
   508. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2978409)
Varitek walking was the best possible outcome.
He didn't help by swinging at a previous ball four.
   509. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2978408)
Balfour actually trying to pitch worse than Kazmir and Beckett, which shouldn't be possible.
   510. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2978410)
Well, I look dumb. Still don't think starting the runner made any damn sense.
   511. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2978411)
Burn through the bullpen! Of course, we kinda should be burning through ours...
   512. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2978412)
There were at least THREE balls in that at-bat that Gameday thinks were strikes.

Sometimes life just isn't fair.
   513. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2978413)
Axe commercial - use Axe and get you arm torn off.

Phillies win the world series in 5.
   515. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2978415)
I think the problem is likely more Gameday than the ump. I don't see that many issues with the zone from here.
   516. Lassus Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2978416)
I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING CRAIG SAGER, SHUT UP.

Axe commercial - use Axe and get you arm torn off.
And yet still classier than the previous iteration.
   519. Darren Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2978419)
Gameday doesn't have a strikezone outline though, does it?
   520. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2978420)
OH NO!!! GET YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE STING RAY TANK!!!
   521. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2978421)
I don't have cable, so I'm listening on the radio and using Gameday. I can only go on that.
   522. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Tokyo Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2978422)
There were at least THREE balls in that at-bat that Gameday thinks were strikes.

Is Gameday the definitive authority?
   523. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2978423)
That's as far as Kotsay can hit it.
   524. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2978424)
That's a pretty tasteful jacket, really. I mean, comparatively.

That's like saying Moe is the smart one.
   525. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2978425)
Phillies win the world series in 5.

Red Sox didn't sweep the Angels this year, which means they won't win the World Series.
Maybe just beating Angels in the ALDS will be enough.
   526. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2978426)
Is Gameday the definitive authority?
It's pretty definitive usually, in my experience. At least in stadiums with the up-to-date technology.
   527. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2978427)
Coco hits LHP OK...
   528. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2978428)
Figures that Kotsay would just miss a first pitch cookie, even though all he ever does is swing on the first pitch.
   529. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2978429)
Phillies would get crushed by either the Red Sox or the Rays.
   530. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2978431)
Crisp is DYNAMIC!
   531. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#2978432)
Phillies would get crushed by either the Red Sox or the Rays.

You mean "will".
   532. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#2978433)
Caray: Before the trade 4.9 runs a game, after the trade 6 runs/game.

I didn't realize Lugo sucked so much.
   533. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#2978434)
You know Caray really wants the suicide squeeze with Crisp here. This game has had far too much power for Mr. Manufactured Run.
   534. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2978435)
A healthy and hot Cubs club was the only NL team that had a real shot at beating the Rays or Sox, IMO.
   535. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2978436)
How do you suicide squeeze with 2 outs?
   536. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2978437)
That's 'casue he doesn't realize there's to outs already...
   537. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2978438)
Coco's fightin'.
   538. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2978439)
How do you suicide squeeze with 2 outs?

That's why Caray thinks they call it the suicide squeeze!
   539. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2978440)
If the Phillies lineup stays hot, and Kazmir and Beckett stay hurt, I think their chances would be pretty good.
   540. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2978441)
If Beckett comes out again, I'll go insane.
   541. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2978442)
Nasty pitch.
   542. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2978444)
You know Caray really wants the suicide squeeze with Crisp here.

Crisp should've tried bunting for a hit.
   543. Lassus Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2978443)
Jesus, about damn time. I'm going to be here for freaking ever.
   544. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2978445)
You talk about swinging over a breaking pitch!
   545. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2978446)
How many homers in this game? 8?
   546. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2978447)
If Beckett comes out again, I'll go insane.

Get out the straight jacket, then.
   547. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2978448)
Beckett has nothing, and he was just sitting for 45 minutes. He's gotta be done.
   548. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2978449)
How long did that half-inning take? It felt like an entire Presidential administration to me.
   549. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2978450)
If the Phillies lineup stays hot,

A hot team is unbeatable, just ask the Rockies.
   550. E., Hinske Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2978451)
Red Sox didn't sweep the Angels this year, which means they won't win the World Series.

Every year since 1919 that I have made a pilgrimage to Fenway, the Sox have won the Series. I didn't go this year and wasn't planning to, until I had tickets for G3, G4 and G5 fall into my lap. Take from that what you will.
   551. Lassus Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2978452)

   553. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2978454)
With Beckett and Kazmir both pitching like this, the Phillies will win the World Series for sure. I'm not even going to bother with the rest of the playoffs.
   554. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2978455)
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
   555. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2978456)
And it's Beckett.
   556. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2978457)
bye bye lead
   557. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2978458)
This is retarded.
   558. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2978460)
And Beckett returns!

Please oh god please let this be a terrible decision by Francona.
   559. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2978461)
I don't think Beckett "feeling good about himself" should be the goal of the playoffs.
   560. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2978462)
This is absurd.
   561. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2978464)
come on Aki, let's get this going.
   562. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2978463)
Please oh god please let this be a terrible decision by Francona.

It's a terrible decision whether he allows more runs or not.
   563. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2978465)
But Biff, we have to give him a shot at the win! That's more important than maximizing the team's chance of winning.
   564. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2978466)
Not good. Leash better be short as ####...
   565. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2978467)
Shook off to the inside 2-seamer.
   566. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2978468)
That was a horseshit strike call after what we saw last inning.
   567. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2978469)
Well, he got the leadoff guy.
   568. salajander Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2978470)
Beckett out again? Francona catch a case of "big game pitcher can work it out!" from Torre/Grady/etc.?
   569. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2978471)
The 2-seamer is not his bread-and-butter pitch, you idiot.
   570. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2978472)
The two-seamer is his bread and butter? Shut the #### up you moron.
   571. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2978473)
Another 2-0 to Upton. Here comes the tie game.
   572. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2978474)
Every year since 1919 that I have made a pilgrimage to Fenway, the Sox have won the Series.

You should've bought season tickets in 1967
   573. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2978475)
Dear BJ Upton.

Take a strike!!
   574. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2978476)
Yeah, put him on so Peña can hit a 2-run bomb. Nice.
   575. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2978478)
####. ####. ####. ####.

Tito, you're being as dumb as Buck Martinez.

   580. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:26 PM (#2978482)
This is not a difficult decision, Darling.
   581. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:26 PM (#2978483)
Pena hits Lopez well. It should be MDC here.
   582. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:27 PM (#2978484)
Too loyal.
   583. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:27 PM (#2978485)
Is anybody warming up?
   584. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:27 PM (#2978486)
This game could end up like Game 4 of the 1993 World Series, with Dustin Pedroia playing Lenny Dykstra.
   585. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:27 PM (#2978487)
Well, Francona has officially jumped the shark.
   586. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:27 PM (#2978488)
Lopez and Delcarmen are both ready to go.
   587. tfbg9 Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2978489)

is this like herd vs pack animals?

Not on the same page.

Francona has done this before. Remember Pedro in Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS. It worked out ok that time thanks to Trot Nixon.
   594. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2978497)
You are all overreacting. Beckett will get out of the inning without damange. I just know it. I feel that doomed feeling in my bones.
   595. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2978498)
Did he just say "there's a difference between an instinctive decision and a gut decision"?

An instinctive decision is anal.
   596. salajander Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2978499)
Beckett'll probably wriggle through this inning, reinforcing Francona's poor choice.
   597. Chip Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2978500)
Tries to get the DP with the changeup away, then gives up the easy SB.
   598. Dan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2978501)
No he won't. Even if he somehow gets Peña out, he's absolutely not going to get Longoria.
   599. ekogan Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2978502)
Shift off now
   600. Ivan Grushenko of HK in Tokyo Posted: October 11, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2978503)

So a gut decision is rectal?
