For what it's worth, Whatifsports.com came out with the 2007 teams now. So I ran 10 game 3s through it, here are the results:

1: Indians 7-2 as Dice-K struggles mightily and Hafner has 3 RBIs

2: Red Sox 14-7 as Dice-K struggles mightily (again) but Westbrook sucks even more, lasting only 3 innings.

3: Red Sox 14-3 as Veritek has 5 RBIs.

4: Indians 2-0 Westbrook goes 6 and the bullpen holds it from there.

5: Red Sox 8-7 as both pitcher's struggle mightily.

6: Indians 7-3 as Sizemore drives in 3 runs.

7: Indians 11-0 as Dice-K gets shelled.

8: Indians 6-5. With men on 1st and 2nd, J.D. Drew grounds into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

9: Red Sox 6-3 as Dice-K strikes out 11.

10: Red Sox 5-4 on a 8th inning Veritek 2-run homer.

So it ends up being 5-5, so the game's a push says the computer. A pattern arose where the games were essentially decided by whether it was "good Dice-K" or "bad Dice-K".

A pattern arose where the games were essentially decided by whether it was "good Dice-K" or "bad Dice-K".

And it appears Good Dice-K still gives up a few runs, too. Westbrook, on the other hand, has a 20% chance of not yielding any, according to the results. Hmmm.

Scenario #8 made me incredibly angry.

Good to know Varitek is the key to the offense, though.
   3. Joe Bivens, Ditch Digger Posted: October 15, 2007 at 06:46 PM (#2577559)
Thank god games aren't played on the computer.

Westbrook doesn't scare me as much as Dice-K does. The Red Sox should score a bunch tonight. I hope Dice-K is on. We shall see.
   4. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:07 PM (#2577570)
Hey, we're 6-5 favorites tonight.
   5. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2577573)
Big strike zone tonight.
   6. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2577575)
Pedroia is lost in these playoffs. There's no way he should be striking out at all against Jake Westbrook, let alone on three pitches.
   7. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2577576)
Pedroia is totally off his game.
   8. JoelW Iz in Ur Baseball Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2577577)
Agreed Biff, just awful
   9. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2577579)
Check that.
   10. JoelW Iz in Ur Baseball Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:13 PM (#2577580)
Looks like it's not that big left-right, but more north-south...kind of wish it was the other way with Dice-K pitching.
   11. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:13 PM (#2577581)
Maybe he's hurt. Seriously, he banged the shoulder pretty good the other night diving for a ball, IIRC.
   12. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:13 PM (#2577582)
Yeah, the ump's holding the line on that outside corner.
   13. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:13 PM (#2577583)
BB. Good job.

Was Dusty's left shoulder?
   14. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:14 PM (#2577584)
Those outside pitches were strikes to Pedroia. It is going to be one of those games isn't it?

GIDP

Damn shift.
   17. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:14 PM (#2577587)
Who broke Dustin Pedroia?
   18. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2577588)
What the #### Ortiz? God damn it, not a good start to this game.
   19. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2577589)
Damn, ball was hit hard.
   20. AuntBea Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2577590)
nice play
   21. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2577591)
What, Ortiz shouldn't try to crush the ball? He hit that hard.
   22. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:16 PM (#2577592)
That was hardly a fantastic play. Hard hit, but he only had to take a step, maybe two, and he got a nice hop.
   23. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:16 PM (#2577593)
Wedge has been decent with his defensive positioing this postseason so far.
   24. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:16 PM (#2577594)
More BS BABIP this series
   25. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:17 PM (#2577595)
It was a nice play.
   26. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:17 PM (#2577596)
I was quoting what's his name on the "fantastic", BTW.
   27. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:17 PM (#2577597)
I know.
   28. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:18 PM (#2577598)
Yep, I'm agreeable to "nice".
   29. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2577600)
Nice play by Lugo.
   30. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2577601)
Lugo?
   31. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2577602)
Shitty throw by Lugo after a good play, but it all works out.
   32. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:21 PM (#2577604)
"Shitty throw by Lugo after a good play"

He had to get rid of it as quickly as possible, and throw across his body. So it wasn't that bad, I didn't think.
   33. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:21 PM (#2577605)
What the #### is that annoying sound in the background?
   34. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:21 PM (#2577606)
Hm, looks like we have a decent version of Daisuke this evening.

And when you weigh 110 lbs, its hard to generate momentum.
   36. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:22 PM (#2577609)
Why does the red on the Sox uni's look orange when Fox uses the behind the plate camera? Same way last game too.
   37. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:22 PM (#2577611)
Pronk's scary.
   38. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:23 PM (#2577613)
He really throws a lot of pitches that miss badly.
   39. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:23 PM (#2577614)
Hmm, wonder if they are using Questec and grading them in the LCS?
   40. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:23 PM (#2577615)
He has a wide outside corner to lefties.
   41. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2577617)
Kind of surprised they're showing umpire ERA during the broadcast. Anyone know much about that stat?

Good first inning for Matsuzaka.
   42. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2577618)
This homeplate umpire will decide the game.
   43. TravisBedard Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2577619)
Bernal - I Don't know but they REALLY need to fix it
   44. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2577620)
More power nibbling BS. Why won't this stupid J!@ throw strikes?
   45. JoelW Iz in Ur Baseball Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2577621)
So far so good...
   46. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2577622)
Daisuke is actually spotting his fastball tonight. I like it.
   47. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:25 PM (#2577623)
Kind of surprised they're showing umpire ERA during the broadcast. Anyone know much about that stat?

Yup, huge stat for bettors.
   48. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:25 PM (#2577624)
Nice fastball command so far...I'm thinking the breaking stuff appeared to be 1-5 or whatever, but the heaters were well-spotted, and he had his 94 velocity, unless the gun's hot.
   49. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:26 PM (#2577626)
Yup, huge stat for bettors.

That ship sailed, Vegas is aware of that stuff.
   50. Bernal Diaz has an angel on his shoulder. Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:27 PM (#2577628)
Vegas is aware of everything. The sportsbook at Ceasar's probably know what Joel Skinner had for breakfast this morning.
   51. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:28 PM (#2577629)
The key for Westbrook will probably be how many he BB's.
   52. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:30 PM (#2577630)
Well, that's 2 walks so far Teddy
   53. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:30 PM (#2577632)
OK. Take a few pitches Mikey?
   54. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:30 PM (#2577633)
Fox graph for the 0-0 please...
   55. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:31 PM (#2577634)
Where was Jhonny?
   56. TravisBedard Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:31 PM (#2577635)
Is there a listing of Average Time of Game to go on the back of Gorman's baseball card too? Gorman on prevent defense + patience at the plate could equal a 6 hour game.
   57. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:31 PM (#2577636)
Come on Drew!
   58. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:31 PM (#2577637)
Never mind. Camer angle fooled me...
   59. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:32 PM (#2577638)
Would rather Drew had actually gotten a hit. But I'll take it.
   60. Chip Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:32 PM (#2577639)
Clutch error force, JD!
   61. TravisBedard Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:32 PM (#2577640)
Garko looked like Giambi in MVP 2005 there...
   62. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:32 PM (#2577641)
Oh god, Varitek up with bases loaded. Can he ground into a triple play?
   63. Joe Bivens, Ditch Digger Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:32 PM (#2577642)
OK, we need a base hit here.
   64. Paul DepoProvera Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2577643)
Varitek, just hit a bloop single and get one out.
   65. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2577644)
"Can he ground into a triple play?"

It's entirely possible. How many of those in the postseason, I wonder?
   66. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2577645)
Drew still crap. And here's the World's Worst Hitter with the Sacks Drunk.
   67. TravisBedard Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2577646)
4-6-3
   68. Chip Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2577647)
Lefty Varitek with the bases loaded. Ugh. Plus he's slumping below his normal level of mediocrity.
   69. JoelW Iz in Ur Baseball Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2577648)
So I was at a Sox bar in NYC the other night, and told people how much I couldn't stand Varitek, and they all started yelling at me. Needless to say, he grounded into a DP. I just smiled and took a sip of my beer. Professor Thom's is a good place for a game though.
   70. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:34 PM (#2577649)
Varitek is so incredibly useless. It boggles the mind.
   71. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:34 PM (#2577650)
F*cking hell Cappy, you are brutal with the BL'd.
   72. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:34 PM (#2577652)
Hmmm... better or worse than a run-scoring double play? In a 0-0 game, with the bottom of the lineup behind him, I should think that's worse.
   73. Chip Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:34 PM (#2577653)
What an awful swing. That was crushable.
   74. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:35 PM (#2577654)
We're gonna pull the large squander.
   75. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:35 PM (#2577655)
"told people how much I couldn't stand Varitek, and they all started yelling at me"

Well, given that he was in, what, the top five among MLB catchers in OPS this year... maybe they were right. Not that it excuses the yelling.

Varitek is not what we might have hoped, given his flashes of offensive very-goodness. But he's still decidedly above average as a catcher.
   76. JoelW Iz in Ur Baseball Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:35 PM (#2577656)
I'm with tfbg9 right now, just stay patient Coco...
   77. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577657)
It could be 3-0, ignoring the logical fallacy...
   78. PJ Martinez Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577658)
Now _that_ was useless.
   79. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577659)
What a fukking joke
   80. Answer Guy Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577660)
What's really weird is that there are only 5 catchers in MLB who had clearly better offensive seasons than Varitek. Posada, Martinez, Martin, Mauer, and McCann. (And McCann is close since he's got a lower OBP.)
   81. TravisBedard Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577661)
Jhesus
   82. Chip Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577662)
Coco's going to attack a bad 2-1 pitch now.

Yup.

with the bottom of the lineup behind him

This is the key point. As you can see now.
   88. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577668)
Are you ####### kidding me? #### you, Coco.
   89. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2577669)
Crisp is a really bad hitter.
   90. Answer Guy Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:37 PM (#2577670)
####!!!
   91. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:38 PM (#2577673)
Huge failure there. Sh1t approach.
   92. Answer Guy Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:38 PM (#2577674)
The bottom of this lineup is just completely useless right now.
   93. Dan Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:38 PM (#2577675)
Seriously, can Ellsbury start tomorrow?
   94. Chip Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:38 PM (#2577676)
Tried to pull a pitch that was breaking outside. Jesus.
   95. Answer Guy Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:38 PM (#2577678)
Does Beckett go tomorrow if the Sox lose?
   96. Mattbert Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:39 PM (#2577679)
Back-to-back failure to hit the ball in the air with any sort of authority. I don't care that Westbrook's a sinker-ish guy. That's absurd.
   97. Chip Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:39 PM (#2577680)
I mean, what happened to "we have to take the same approach we did against Carmona?" Which involved making him get the ball up, and going to the opposite field rather than trying to pull the sinker. Just an awful, awful swing given that.
   98. AuntBea Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:40 PM (#2577681)
Historically, it's slightly better for the home team (indians) to allow the run-scoring double play rather than the popout, not accounting for batting order position. But it's close.
   99. tfbg9 Posted: October 15, 2007 at 07:41 PM (#2577682)
Fox graph please?
