Question: Are these the two whitest teams in baseball? I haven't actually looked at the numbers, but it seems to me that both of these teams have a ton of white guys.
   3. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: October 27, 2007 at 01:23 PM (#2595775)
Any reason other than what Fox wants that this game couldn't have started an hour earlier?

5 PM in Denver might be a shadow problem? Not to defend FOX, mind you.

The Globe's Extra Bases blog has tonight's lineups:
Red Sox

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, 1B
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. J.D. Drew, RF
7. Jason Varitek, C
8. Julio Lugo, SS
9. Daisuke Matsuzaka, P

Rockies

1. Kazuo Matsui, 2B
2. Troy Tulowitzki, SS
3. Matt Holiday, LF
4. Todd Helton, 1B
5. Garrett Atkins, 3B
6. Brad Hawpe, RF
7. Yorvit Torrealba, C
8. Cory Sullivan, CF
9. Josh Fogg, RHP
Hurdle makes the move of going to Sullivan and shoving Tulowitzki into the 2 spot. Making changes just for the sake of making changes is, I think, an underappreciated move in saber circles.

Tacoby Bellsbury into the leadoff slot in a World Series game. I think Coco Crisp can count the number of games that he'll play for the Red Sox in the rest of his career on one hand.

The Red Sox starting lineup features three white non-Hispanics out of nine tonight.
   7. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 27, 2007 at 06:08 PM (#2595971)
Also, Taveras (0-7, 3 K) has generally hit like a guy on whom the Red Sox have a nasty advance scouting report. So, yeah, I think Hurdle's move is a good idea.

Is it fair to say they are two of the non-blackest?
   9. villageidiom Posted: October 27, 2007 at 06:50 PM (#2595990)
Tacoby Bellsbury into the leadoff slot in a World Series game.

Kurkjian says it's the first time in World Series history that a team's lineup starts with two rookies, and the first time in 40 years ('67 Red Sox) that a team's lineup features three rookies (the third being Matsuzaka, batting 9th).
   10. PJ Martinez Posted: October 27, 2007 at 07:22 PM (#2596003)
"The Red Sox starting lineup features three white non-Hispanics out of nine tonight."

Well, Ellsbury is half Native American, right? Presumably the other half is white non-Hispanic?

Also, where'd Lowell get his last name? Is his father of English descent?

Colorado does seem to have an unusually white team.

Remember the 2002 World Series-- Mike Scoscia's Angels vs. Dusty Baker's Giants? That seemed almost Bird v. Magic-esque to me.

Is Fenway the only park in the majors where fans don't wave towels?
   12. AndrewJ Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:21 PM (#2596026)
The national anthem is sung by Carrie Underwood, who won American Idol on Fox.

The World Series is being telecast by Fox.

The odds of this coincidence: 500 billion to one.
   13. Chip Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:21 PM (#2596027)
I thought there was a baseball game in Denver on Fox tonight. Turns out it's the Nuggets: towel waving, video boards giving folks cues when to wave those towels, bad music at ear-splitting volumes, and an arena announcer who confuses his job with that of head cheerleader.
   14. The Milton Bradley Effect (Voxter) Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:22 PM (#2596028)
Also, where'd Lowell get his last name? Is his father of English descent?

According to Wikipedia, his father was from Cuba but of Irish and German descent.

Good Luck Rox, and to your fans, especially the guys here at BTF.

Question: Are these the two whitest teams in baseball? I haven't actually looked at the numbers, but it seems to me that both of these teams have a ton of white guys.

Question: Who the f*ck cares? Seriously...
   16. tfbg9 Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:29 PM (#2596033)
The Red Sox are 6.5 or 7 to 5 favorites in this ballgame, depending on where you look. Counter-intuitive, at least to me.

McCarver just said that Rockies have only moved runners along with a hit in two games. Haven't there only been two games in the World Series?
   19. bonifacio's got the good face! Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:32 PM (#2596036)
baseball is getting less white AND less African-American--
shocking update: both these things can be true.
we now return you to your thread....

Question: Who the f*ck cares? Seriously...

Me? I don't think anybody was accusing anybody of racism or anything. But I find demographics interesting, personally.

That said, the Red Sox aren't a particularly white team, as far as I know. The Rockies start, depending on the day, six to eight non-Hispanic white people. It's kind of an oddity.
   21. Dan Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:34 PM (#2596039)
It's not very counter-intuitive to me, Teddy, I imagine the Red Sox will light up Fogg.
   22. tfbg9 Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:34 PM (#2596040)
I think Coco Crisp can count the number of games that he'll play for the Red Sox in the rest of his career on one hand.

Yeah, maybe. I want to like the guy, I do like his centerfielding a lot--best we've had out there in a long long time, as Dan Dierdorf would say. But then again,Dan did simultaneously endorsed Lays Potato Chips and Ultra Slim Fast.

And Dice-K hasn't exactly been an "ace" lately.

Has anybody noted how Ellsbury, with the helmet on, resembles Beltran?
   31. Dan Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:38 PM (#2596049)
Nice little swinging bunt. Daisuke was an ace for 3 innings vs. Cleveland in Game 7. That was the best I can remember seeing him. Then he just sorta lost it really quickly.

Watched the first two games in HD with TiVo. Watching this one on an antenna with some pretty serious shadows. Yeah, a bit of a step down.

I love Jacoby Ellsbury.

He's a small middle infielder who hits leadoff, of course he's fast! Don't be crazy!

   57. tfbg9 Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:45 PM (#2596075)
who is Kaz Matsui?

In an old Hollywood flick, he'd be the cook.

Can someone, somewhere in the Fox booth please go and punch Joe Buck in the head for saying yet again that Pedroia has "great speed"?
   60. tfbg9 Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:46 PM (#2596078)
The 2-0 was crap. Meat. BP.

   62. Dan Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:47 PM (#2596080)

Dammit, Manny.

So, anybody got any last-minute costume ideas? I'm going to a party after the game, and at this point, my plan is to get one of those "Hello, my name is" stickers and write "Danger" on it.
   70. Dan Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:49 PM (#2596088)
On the plus side, if Matsuzaka gets this zone, he can be good.
   71. tfbg9 Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:49 PM (#2596090)
Damn. He's behind everybody, seemingly.

3-1--HACK!!!
   72. Chip Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:49 PM (#2596089)
Fogg apparently wants to fall behind every single hitter so he can throw slop in hitter's counts. Like that 86 MPH little nothing slider on 2-0 to Lowell.

Not good.

So, this ballpark is what to CF? How does Fenway "fit" inside it? Fenway's ~420 to slight right center? Or did they slide Fenway "down" because of the tiny fould territory?
   80. tfbg9 Posted: October 27, 2007 at 08:53 PM (#2596099)
