BTF GC Game of the Night: San Francisco Giants (74-82) at San Diego Padres (77-79) - 10:05 PM EDT

SF: Tomko (7-15, 4.48)
SD: Eaton (10-5, 4.18)

The Giants are 9-2 in games started by Mr. Bonds this season after last night’s comback win. Though they are six games under .500, the Giants are only three games out of first. Yes, the NL West is the worst division in the history of sports.

Despite hitting just .250 with four homers, Bonds’ impact on the team has been palpable since his return, and there’s no reason not to think that if he’d been healthy, the Giants would have cruised to a division title.

If the Giants sweep, they’ll be tied for first, so for them its really a lose and go home situation.

San Diego, save for a brilliant month of May, has been decidedly mediocre.

The NL West is not as bad as last year's NFC West.

Tomko's season has been maddeningly inconsistent. He has pitched very well on his last few starts, but there's the palpable sense that he is constantly on the verge of meltdown. Will he be back next year?

And to think that the Dbacks are probably a better team right now than either of these two ensembles of jokers...

decidedly mediocre.

for this division, that's a complement.

It's worse than that: the Giants are eight games under .500 and only three games back. Uh oh, the nausea returns....

If the Dodgers hadn't lost Saturday to Pittsburgh, they'd still be alive too.

That's even more frightening.

The NL West is not as bad as last year’s NFC West.

Or this year's NFC North.

But bad divisions are good for football, because that's "parity."

If the Padres really did have a brilliant May, then I'd say they've been worse than mediocre save for that month.

Because Arizona and San Francisco play each other the final weekend, the Padres are assured of being no worse than second!

I'm looking forward to the final day of the year. With the Giants, DBacks and Padres in a 3-way tie at 77-84.

The DBacks will send Justin Nippert out to the hill to face Brett Tomko, while the Padres will trot out Pedro Astacio against Jeff Weaver of the Dodgers.

The season will hang in the balance as Jason Phillips comes up to bat in the 8th against Chris Hammond.

Ahh, it will be epic.

The Padres went 22-6 in May, or 16 games above five hundred. Since they are now two under, that means they've played 18 games under in April and June through today. If you remove the month of May from the record books, than the Padres are in last place in the NL West.

The NFC North doesn't have Barry Bonds. Or even Barry Sanders.

The main guy just yelled into the microphone in pure anger. It was quite funny.
   20. AlouGoodbye Posted: September 27, 2005 at 11:09 PM (#1647993)
Nice, Matt. Tomko is doing his level best to hand this back.

Wow. Wild one. Alou's going to have to win this one--I doubt they let Barry hit any more tonight.
   30. Bob T Posted: September 28, 2005 at 12:02 AM (#1648047)
Alou let Accardo bat? Like he doesn't have any relievers at this time of year?
   31. AlouGoodbye Posted: September 28, 2005 at 12:06 AM (#1648051)
Alou has murdered the bullpen all year long.
   32. Bob T Posted: September 28, 2005 at 12:35 AM (#1648084)
What are the chances that Hoffman makes an appearance tonight?
   33. AlouGoodbye Posted: September 28, 2005 at 12:41 AM (#1648089)
100%
   34. shoewizard Posted: September 28, 2005 at 12:48 AM (#1648094)
I can't believe I'm rooting for the Giants. I feel icky.
   35. AlouGoodbye Posted: September 28, 2005 at 01:04 AM (#1648107)
Not with a bang but a whimper.
   36. Bob T Posted: September 28, 2005 at 01:10 AM (#1648117)
And the magic number is 2.

By tomorrow, half the playoff field should be set.
