I would only say that Chicago doesn't belong, at this point they've finished there freefall and are a sure playoff team. Or at least, less pressure.
I hope Chacon's comparable streak ends in a firey ball of death and fire.

WakefieldSchilling (W)To give myself a little more credit - I had originally projected the Yankees would lose a game in Baltimore, but revised it after seeing their laydown job against Boston.
Remember, kids, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies.
They still will have a lot to say about who gets in and who doesn't.
Plus dropping two to a sadsack Detroit team does not qualify one to say they have "finished their freefall."
Sox game is on ESPN tonight, which is great news.
Here's the fun part. Let's say they win the next two v. Detroit, and hence clinch a play-off berth. They would then have a lot less to play for this weekend than Cleveland, PLUS those games are in Cleveland. So there'd be a pretty good chance Cleveland does some solid work, too.
With that in mind, I suspect that the Boston-New York series is going to be all-or-nothing. Last night's losses by both teams made it quite likely that one of 'em is going to be done as of Sunday night.
Answer there, as I don't really Game Chatter all that often.
That said, I don't feel good about the Indians' chances of winning 4 of their last 5 to guarantee a playoff spot. I, like Tony, feel the inevitable crushing defeat looming at the end of every Cleveland pro sports team's season since 1964.
Mostly its now just a hoodoo thing.
Can anyone better at math than I determine if it is mathematically possible to have a four-way tie come Monday?
True -- it'll have some meaning for the Sox. But when you add the fact Cleveland is playing at home, plus the fact they'll have more at stake, I think we can reasonably speculate they could have a good weekend.
I'll say this: if Cleveland goes into the weekend with the same number of losses it has now (65), I don't believe the loser of NYY-Bos will make the play-offs.
Sure it's possible. If
(a) Either NY or Bos goes 2-0, while the other goes 1-1 the next two days, and then the team that's one game up takes one of three in Boston, they'd both be 95-67.
(b) If the White Sox go 0-2 the next two games, while the Indians go 1-1, and then the Indians take 2 of 3, then they'll both be 95-67, too.
Voila.
Real math or Armageddon math?
Oh christ.
There are a number of ways for the White Sox to go 1-4 with the other teams going 3-2.
The White Sox have to go exactly 1-4 for the big tie to occur, but it could happen.
If the Indians are tied with for the wild-card with one other team the playoff is Monday?
If the Indians, Red Sox and Yankees are all tied the Sox and Yanks have a playoff for the division on Monday, followed by an Indians/loser of the AL East game on Tuesday?
Is that correct?
I can't vouch for its accuracy, but David Pinto posted the scenarios this morning on his blog.
What happens with the home field if the Angels also finish 95-67 in that scenario?
Yeah, I would think that if all four were tied the Indians would play the White Sox on Monday for the Central and the Yanks would play the Red Sox fo rthe East on Monday. Then the two losers would play for the wild card on Tuesday.
Then again, I thought the Sox would win at least 3 of 4 against my kitties, so what do I know?
No worries, SSR. Heh, heh.
Gammons suggested on BBTN that it would go - Red Sox -Yankees and Chicago-Cleveland on Monday.
Then the losers would play on Tuesday.
"And the Angels win because they are the only ones with any pitching left."
And just to make it more fun...
White Sox 1-4
Indians 3-2
Yanks 3-2
Red Sox 3-2
Angels 4-1
and all teams are tied at 95 wins, so determining home field advantages would be fun, too.
How would they decide that, anyway? Not sure it matters for the Indians, though. They're better on the road.

Boston at New York
Central
Chicago at Cleveland

New York at Cleveland
New York at Chicago
Cleveland at Boston

Whether the Yankees win or lose, that's been one lucky ####### prediction chart to this point. I remember how ridiculous it seemed when you started it...and here we are, 15 games later the Yankees are 12-3, one off the pace. Not too shabby.
What kind of a league are you guys running here, where there are no good teams to speak of? That's the best the AL can offer, a team that can't even clear 95 wins?

It's even crazier to think that based on the original chart, I had them winning 3 of 4 in Baltimore (since revised to a sweep, probably not smart), which means we are exactly on pace to go 16-4 as I predicted two weeks ago.
Well, no one in our playoffs is going to have less than 80 wins, that's for sure.
FWIW, I have a sick feeling about the next two games. Cabrera and Bedard>Chacon and Small.
He says he was going for the ball.
Listen JV-boy.... the NL will have exactly ONE team with 95 wins or more... the Cardinals. The best anyone else can hope for is 94 by the Braves.
Houston might get to 90 wins, but they'll have to close with four wins in their last five games.
And you may have a team with 80 wins on the button in the playoffs.
Nothing we haven't seen before.
Crede is supposed to be back with the team today although not in the line up. His wife had a healthy baby girl.
Or even better, the 2004 LCS IRC transcripts!

I'm not overly concerned about the White Sox, I think they're pretty much in.

That's some fuzzy math there, McNally.
So what you're saying is we'd have one hell of a really exciting race for the play-offs.
As opposed to what we have, which is one hell of a really exciting race for the play-offs.
Boston? That's for 1967.
New York? 1961.
Of course, if they lose and Cleveland and Chicago wins, that more-or-less ensures this weekend's series in Boston is all-or-nothing.
Works for me, though, as this will be a way of getting the news faster. I usually look at BTF then check the gamecast thing.
I'm also kinda thinking all four contenders win tonight based on the pitching matchups, but who the hell knows.

And hey, the Red Sox are on ESPN, which means I can participate!
Score!
Don't mock me.
Look at me, I'm Matt Gelb watching the Red Sox game, aren't I cool? : )
