Sean, it can't be any worse than the typical primer thread.

I would only say that Chicago doesn't belong, at this point they've finished there freefall and are a sure playoff team. Or at least, less pressure.

I hope Arroyo's streak of getting way more outs on balls in play than he should continues.

I hope Chacon's comparable streak ends in a firey ball of death and fire.

To give myself a little more credit - I had originally projected the Yankees would lose a game in Baltimore, but revised it after seeing their laydown job against Boston.

Remember, kids, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies.

This is cool.

Right now Chicago stays, they have not clinched anything, and could wind up as the wild card, thus pushing New York or Boston out.

They still will have a lot to say about who gets in and who doesn't.

Plus dropping two to a sadsack Detroit team does not qualify one to say they have "finished their freefall."

A true test of the BTF server tonight.

Sox game is on ESPN tonight, which is great news.
   7. Sam M. Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:02 PM (#1649200)
If I have this figured right, either New York or Boston MUST lose at least 67 games, since one of them will lost 2 of 3 this weekend. That means that the White Sox needs to win only 2 of their last 5 to clinch a spot.

Here's the fun part. Let's say they win the next two v. Detroit, and hence clinch a play-off berth. They would then have a lot less to play for this weekend than Cleveland, PLUS those games are in Cleveland. So there'd be a pretty good chance Cleveland does some solid work, too.

With that in mind, I suspect that the Boston-New York series is going to be all-or-nothing. Last night's losses by both teams made it quite likely that one of 'em is going to be done as of Sunday night.

Another addendum to the N&IWOP;™: After Moose's debacle last night, I am now very concerned about my prediction for that final game.
   9. Urban Faber Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:04 PM (#1649211)
The White Sox would still need to be three games ahead of Cleveland going into that series, with the Indians as the presumptive wild card, in order for that series not to have some meaning for the White Sox.
   10. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:06 PM (#1649218)
But, Sean, if the Yankees lose, you're going to be running around telling everyone how you were just having fun and being optimistic! You don't want to keep posting here as if you take it seriously. Sure, you'll take it seriously if the Yankees win, but you want to do that after the fact, not before.

   14. Matthew Rich Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:07 PM (#1649228)
Sam M that's an excellent point, especially since Ozzie has something of a fetish for resting his regulars in the final game of a series of the Sox have won the first two.

That said, I don't feel good about the Indians' chances of winning 4 of their last 5 to guarantee a playoff spot. I, like Tony, feel the inevitable crushing defeat looming at the end of every Cleveland pro sports team's season since 1964.

Mostly its now just a hoodoo thing.

Can anyone better at math than I determine if it is mathematically possible to have a four-way tie come Monday?
   17. Sam M. Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:10 PM (#1649237)

True -- it'll have some meaning for the Sox. But when you add the fact Cleveland is playing at home, plus the fact they'll have more at stake, I think we can reasonably speculate they could have a good weekend.

I'll say this: if Cleveland goes into the weekend with the same number of losses it has now (65), I don't believe the loser of NYY-Bos will make the play-offs.
   18. Urban Faber Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:11 PM (#1649241)
For that Sean, I think the White Sox would have to lose twice to Detroit and the Indians once to Tampa Bay, then the Indians would have to take two of three, and then either the Red Sox or Yankees would have to lose once in the next two days, and then that team would have to win two of three at Fenway this weekend.
   19. Sean McNally Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:12 PM (#1649243)
If that does happen - I definitely going to be icksay on ondaymMay.
   20. Urban Faber Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:13 PM (#1649245)
I think that gets everyone to 95-67.

Can anyone better at math than I determine if it is mathematically possible to have a four-way tie come Monday?

Sure it's possible. If

(a) Either NY or Bos goes 2-0, while the other goes 1-1 the next two days, and then the team that's one game up takes one of three in Boston, they'd both be 95-67.

(b) If the White Sox go 0-2 the next two games, while the Indians go 1-1, and then the Indians take 2 of 3, then they'll both be 95-67, too.

Voila.

By virtue of his one third of a scoreless inning last night (1 k), I hereby endorse Jorge DePaula for the job of #3 guy out of the pen for the Yankees. Also, who does Ramiro Mendoza have to kill to get to pitch in a 17-9 game?

Oh christ.

There are a number of ways for the White Sox to go 1-4 with the other teams going 3-2.

The White Sox have to go exactly 1-4 for the big tie to occur, but it could happen.
   26. Tony H. Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:15 PM (#1649257)
Ok, so if the Indians win 3 then we clinch at least a tie for the wild card, and 4 we clinch a playoff spot, correct?

If the Indians are tied with for the wild-card with one other team the playoff is Monday?

If the Indians, Red Sox and Yankees are all tied the Sox and Yanks have a playoff for the division on Monday, followed by an Indians/loser of the AL East game on Tuesday?

Is that correct?

I can't vouch for its accuracy, but David Pinto posted the scenarios this morning on his blog.

   29. Urban Faber Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:19 PM (#1649269)
Yep, one-game division playoffs on Monday, and losers meet for the wild card on Tuesday.

What happens with the home field if the Angels also finish 95-67 in that scenario?
   30. Tony H. Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:19 PM (#1649271)
And if all four are tied? Three playoff games?

Yeah, I would think that if all four were tied the Indians would play the White Sox on Monday for the Central and the Yanks would play the Red Sox fo rthe East on Monday. Then the two losers would play for the wild card on Tuesday.
   31. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:20 PM (#1649274)

Sean Douglass is pitching tonight. Any fanciful notions of the White Sox going 0-2 against the Tigers are moot.

Then again, I thought the Sox would win at least 3 of 4 against my kitties, so what do I know?

   35. Sean McNally Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:21 PM (#1649282)
And if all four are tied? Three playoff games?

Gammons suggested on BBTN that it would go - Red Sox -Yankees and Chicago-Cleveland on Monday.

Then the losers would play on Tuesday.

"And the Angels win because they are the only ones with any pitching left."

And just to make it more fun...

White Sox 1-4
Indians 3-2
Yanks 3-2
Red Sox 3-2
Angels 4-1

and all teams are tied at 95 wins, so determining home field advantages would be fun, too.
   37. Tony H. Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:23 PM (#1649292)
and all teams are tied at 95 wins, so determining home field advantages would be fun, too.

How would they decide that, anyway? Not sure it matters for the Indians, though. They're better on the road.

These are the coin flip results (courtesy AP on today's with the White Sox included in the WC):

Central
Chicago at Cleveland

Wild card
New York at Cleveland

Hey Sean,
Whether the Yankees win or lose, that's been one lucky ####### prediction chart to this point. I remember how ridiculous it seemed when you started it...and here we are, 15 games later the Yankees are 12-3, one off the pace. Not too shabby.
   40. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: September 28, 2005 at 05:24 PM (#1649296)
hmmmmmm, I say give it to the Angels for being the only team to win their division outright.

all teams are tied at 95 wins,

What kind of a league are you guys running here, where there are no good teams to speak of? That's the best the AL can offer, a team that can't even clear 95 wins?

It's even crazier to think that based on the original chart, I had them winning 3 of 4 in Baltimore (since revised to a sweep, probably not smart), which means we are exactly on pace to go 16-4 as I predicted two weeks ago.

With tom DeLay getting indicted, the only thing that could make this day better is a Yankee win.

FWIW, I have a sick feeling about the next two games. Cabrera and Bedard>Chacon and Small.

Listen JV-boy.... the NL will have exactly ONE team with 95 wins or more... the Cardinals. The best anyone else can hope for is 94 by the Braves.

Houston might get to 90 wins, but they'll have to close with four wins in their last five games.

And you may have a team with 80 wins on the button in the playoffs.

The most pleasant thing about DeLay's indictment is that it was totally unexpected. At least to me. I had completely convinced myself that there was no way it would happen. Even when the whispers were starting this morning I dared not raise my hopes. And then came that joyous, joyous news. It was like Christmas morning. Only no toy trains.

Not that we shouldn't be totally over it by now, but ... if the leagues hadn't realigned and it was still the two division format, things would look like this.

AL EAST
New York 92-65 --
Boston 92-65 --
Cleveland 92-65 --

AL WEST
Chicago 94-63 --
Anaheim 91-66 2.0

if the leagues hadn’t realigned and it was still the two division format, things would look like this.

So what you're saying is we'd have one hell of a really exciting race for the play-offs.

As opposed to what we have, which is one hell of a really exciting race for the play-offs.

"What did we ever do to you Detroit?"

Boston? That's for 1967.

New York? 1961.

This should be crazy, but enjoyable. Personally, looking at the pitching match-ups, it seems like all the contenders should be able to win, with New York (the due-for-a-beating Chacon) and Boston (facing Lilly who has killed them this year) looking like the two possible odd men out.

Of course, if they lose and Cleveland and Chicago wins, that more-or-less ensures this weekend's series in Boston is all-or-nothing.

clearly, this will hit 1000 posts. this is going to be more than the 4 individual games combined. there will be trash talking between the fans of different teams. Sean, it's like you are promoting lurking! (not that i'm complaining...should be interesting)

Major confusion about a half-hour away.

Works for me, though, as this will be a way of getting the news faster. I usually look at BTF then check the gamecast thing.

I'm also kinda thinking all four contenders win tonight based on the pitching matchups, but who the hell knows.

I was going to cut class and go to this Yankee game, but given their performance yesterday when I cut out of work to go to the game, I figured perhaps karma was not good

Gotta say, kind of weird the AL team with the worst record among contenders--assuming we leave Oakland out--clinched a playoff spot first
