Battle for NL MVP part II!

Let the Shawn Green era/error begin.

As much as I love Cliff along with the rest of us that still doesn't hide the fact his line is 245/330/416 and for this season Shawn Green does not bother me as he can provide a needed insurance policy.

I'm sure we all hope and know Cliff with some rest is quite capable of getting hot in the postseason, but we have been saying all year this is his time and we are still waiting, I'm sure mostly due to his injuries.

I'm not worried about next year until Spring Training rolls around, Omar has 360ed us in very little time and I have faith in his long term outlook.

Also I'm sure over a month is enough for Willie to identify Green's shortcomings before the playoffs and for him to use Endy effectively in the playoffs.

Also I don't think Milledge is quite ready yet but yes he should be getting as many ABs as possible in meaningless games. I interested to see what Willie does if and when we officially clinch.

Incredible game last night, I picked the wrong year not to get the Extra Innings package, oh well.

Lets Go Mets!

The National League is on course for a remarkably historic year -- and a Met/Cardinal game chatter is the right place to note it. There have been only 14 seasons in major league history in which the second-best team in the league failed to post at least a .550 winning percentage. Here they are, in order from best record to worst:

1982 National League Atlanta/Philadelphia 89-73 .549
1984 American League Toronto Blue Jays 89-73 .549
1970 National League Pittsburgh Pirates 89-73 .549
1966 American League Minnesota Twins 89-73 .549
1943 American League Washington Senators 84-69 .549
1915 National League Boston Braves 83-69 .546
1958 National League Pittsburgh Pirates 84-70 .545
1941 American League Boston Red Sox 84-70 .545
1914 National League New York Giants 84-70 .545
1902 National League Brooklyn Superbas 75-63 .543
1936 American League Detroit Tigers 83-71 .539
1923 American League Detroit Tigers 83-71 .539
1958 American League Chicago White Sox 82-72 .532

Right now, the Cardinals are at 66-58, a .532 winning percentage, on pace to match the worst mark ever for a league's second-best team. Not that the lack of quality teams in the NL this year is a new point, by any means -- but this is certainly a powerful illustration of just HOW weak the league is in historic terms.

Van the Man scores again! Bye bye Ronnie.
   4. Urban Faber Posted: August 23, 2006 at 04:30 PM (#2154143)
What happened in 1958 that it affected both leagues? There also wasn't a powerhouse record on top of either.
   5. Free Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 04:45 PM (#2154167)
Anyone thinking that the Mets can win 100? Thats' 24-14 the rest of the way. Its not completely unrealistic given their schedule the rest of the way.
   6. PreservedFish Posted: August 23, 2006 at 05:40 PM (#2154241)
As bad as Trachsel has seemed, it's amazing to look at his line compared to Mulder's. Double the wins, and an ERA over 1 run lower.
   7. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:10 PM (#2154285)
SNY just ran a video of all the Mets walk off wins this year. This team rocks!
   8. Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:11 PM (#2154288)
Trash . . . takes . . . the . . . hill.
   9. Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:12 PM (#2154290)
Vizcaino MGL's idea?
   10. greenback Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:14 PM (#2154291)
MGL doesn't work for the Cardinals any more. Not that he had that much pull with Jocketty when he did work for them.
   11. Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:15 PM (#2154292)
Didn't realize. What's he doing now?
   12. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:16 PM (#2154293)
Something that I found interesting:
Mets' OPS by position.

C- .735
1b- .873
2b- .707
3b- .885
SS- .819
LF- .731
CF- .954
RF- .837
   13. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:16 PM (#2154294)
Nice inning Trax.
   14. greenback Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:17 PM (#2154297)
Didn't realize. What's he doing now?

Telling the Indians to trade relievers, last I heard.
   15. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:21 PM (#2154301)
Nice little start by Jose.
   16. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:25 PM (#2154306)
DELGADO!
   17. Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:25 PM (#2154307)
Delgado is back.
   18. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:25 PM (#2154308)
First inning run!
   19. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:27 PM (#2154309)
Delgado!
   20. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:27 PM (#2154310)
I found 12 interesting for a couple reasons:

1) The Mets are getting below average production from 2nd despite all the hitting Stache has done.

2) The Mets are only getting a .760-.770 OPS from the corner outfield spots. That isn't very good.
   21. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:28 PM (#2154313)
I'm calling it. Woodward comes through here.
   22. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:28 PM (#2154314)
Glad LaRussa is piling 1st inning baserunners for us.
   23. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:29 PM (#2154315)
100 run scored for Reyes this season. It won't be his last 100 run season.
   24. greenback Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:29 PM (#2154316)
Oh, Joe West is behind the plate. There's the Cardinals' best hope for tonight.
   25. Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:29 PM (#2154319)
Ah, Keith, late movement is an illusion. All pitches travel a parabolic course.

Woooody!
   26. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:30 PM (#2154320)
Woody! I'm shocked.
   27. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:30 PM (#2154321)
I'm a genius!
   28. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:31 PM (#2154323)
Yep, Mulder is done.
   29. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:32 PM (#2154324)
I was going to say this would be a spot where we miss Valentin.

Time to go for the jugular. Hope LaRussa will IBB more guys for us.
   30. Sam M. Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:33 PM (#2154327)
Now, THIS is the kind of inning to get out of class to see the Mets put together! Outstanding.
   31. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2154332)
Wow, nice catch.
   32. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2154334)
Wow. That is an AMAZING play by Wilson.
   33. Sam M. Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2154335)
Nice play by Wilson -- they should toss the Mets' fan who blew the play for NOT interfering! ;-)
   34. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:37 PM (#2154336)
How can you let the outfielder catch that ball, Met fans?
   35. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:37 PM (#2154337)
Trax is a good hitting pitcher.
   36. greenback Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:38 PM (#2154339)
Yep, Mulder is done.

How does he look? I refuse to watch.
   37. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:38 PM (#2154340)
I know we are not at full strength, but its pure hubris to try to start a guy who can't top 86 against our lineup.
   38. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:39 PM (#2154342)
My favorite part of these extended 1st inning rallies is that Reyes gets to lead off again next inning.
   39. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2154346)
Woody can field too!
   40. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2154347)
Well, that's a nice little play by Woody.
   41. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:42 PM (#2154348)
100 run scored for Reyes this season. It won't be his last 100 run season.

Once Milo figures it out, he'll be in the #2 slot and scoring 100+ runs a season as well. This lineup is lethal when Delgado is hitting.
   42. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:42 PM (#2154349)
That was a very nice play by Woody.
   43. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:43 PM (#2154354)
That was nothing compared to IPOR's diving grab the first week of the season. Now, that was some defense.
   44. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:44 PM (#2154355)
Perfect bunt.
   45. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:44 PM (#2154356)
Beautiful bunt Reyes.
   46. Chris Dial Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:44 PM (#2154357)
Mulder looks, simply, flat. No movement on his fastball at all.
   47. Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:44 PM (#2154358)
Reyes with the bunt. That's encouraging.
   48. PreservedFish Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:45 PM (#2154361)
I'm in love with Jose Reyes. I think he's my favorite player ever, not counting childhood obsessions ( ... Gregg Jefferies).
   49. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:45 PM (#2154363)
Reyes is awesome.
   50. greenback Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:46 PM (#2154364)
I know we are not at full strength, but its pure hubris to try to start a guy who can't top 86 against our lineup.

It's worse than hubris.

Bunting against Mulder is pointless. So is running against him.
   51. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:47 PM (#2154368)
Reyes starts it off by getting on base again. Here we go again!
   52. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:48 PM (#2154371)
Reyes is my favorite player ever.
   53. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:49 PM (#2154373)
A promising start to the 2nd as well.

All I want now is for David to bust out.
   54. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:50 PM (#2154375)
Rolen catches everything.
   55. Chris Dial Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:50 PM (#2154376)
Rolen is awesome.
   56. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:51 PM (#2154378)
Goddammit. That was horrible. I can't believe we won't score here.
   57. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:53 PM (#2154379)
That was disappointing.
   58. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:53 PM (#2154380)
First Philly shipped out Rolen. Then they shipped out Abreu. Can't wait for the day when they make Utley the scapegoat. Hope the Mets are ready to pounce when that day comes.
   59. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:54 PM (#2154382)
It's probably not a good idea to continue to hit the ball to Scott Rolen.
   60. Raskolnikov Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:56 PM (#2154384)
Sign me up for Rolen's HOF petition.
   61. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 07:59 PM (#2154386)
4 pitch walk to the pitcher? Come on Trax.
   62. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:00 PM (#2154387)
That's not cool Trachsel.
   63. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:00 PM (#2154388)
Yeah, Trax, walk Mulder on four pitches. Freaking fantastic.
   64. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:04 PM (#2154392)
Uh oh.
   65. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:05 PM (#2154393)
Oh. Splendid.
   66. Rob Base Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:05 PM (#2154395)
this game is about to be tied.
   67. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:05 PM (#2154394)
Well, this seems vaguely familiar.
   68. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:05 PM (#2154396)
Oof. A couple of those pitches looked good to me.

Bases loaded to Pujols. This could be bad.
   69. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:06 PM (#2154398)
I'd walk him.
   70. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:06 PM (#2154399)
There's two guys you can't walk in the Cards' lineup. Trachsel just walked both of them. In the same inning. Nice going, ace.
   71. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:06 PM (#2154400)
I'm done with Trachsel. Never another good word.
   72. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:07 PM (#2154401)
Only a single. Not bad.
   73. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:07 PM (#2154403)
Two RBI single. If Trax gets Rolen, I'll consider this inning a victory.
   74. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:08 PM (#2154406)
Steve Trachsel is such a crappy pitcher. I can't wait til he's gone.
   75. manchestermets Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:10 PM (#2154408)
Oliver up in the pen. Is that a good sign for the postseason, showing that Willie maybe doesn't have a lot of faith in Trax?
   76. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:10 PM (#2154409)
Does anyone else get the feeling that Willie doesn't really like Trachsel's pitching all that much?
   77. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:11 PM (#2154410)
Even Scott Rolen can't stop Chris Woodward tonight.
   78. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2154413)
Does anyone else get the feeling that Willie doesn't really like Trachsel's pitching all that much?

Willie did not look pleased at all when SNY went to commercial break in between innings.
   79. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2154414)
Does anyone else get the feeling that Willie doesn't really like Trachsel's pitching all that much?

Aside from mrs. Trachsel, is there anyone who does?
   80. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:17 PM (#2154419)
JOSE REYES POWER!
   81. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:17 PM (#2154420)
Jose Reyes!!
   82. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:18 PM (#2154422)
Chris Woodward is a straight baller.

And so is Jose apparently.
   83. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:18 PM (#2154423)
Man, if Jose Reyes had power, he'd really be something.
   84. PreservedFish Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:19 PM (#2154424)
Jose Jose Jose Jose

Best Mets chant ever
   85. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:19 PM (#2154426)
JOSE REYES SUPERSTAR!!!!
   86. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:19 PM (#2154427)
Ozzie couldn't do that.
   87. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:20 PM (#2154428)
It's seemed that Willie has always been a bit quicker with the hook for Trachsel than his other starters. Perhaps it's because Trachsel works so slowly, it gives Willie enough time to come to a decision to pull him.
   88. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:21 PM (#2154430)
So how is everyone? Just got in from the open Syracuse football practice. Crowd was just a tad bit smaller than OSU's.

What's the deal with The Jew? Is he not there yet?
   89. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:23 PM (#2154435)
Green should be in uniform tomorrow.
   90. CrosbyBird Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:26 PM (#2154440)
Okay, so a few months ago I said Reyes would hit 25-30 HR at some point in his career. Who still thinks I'm crazy?
   91. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:26 PM (#2154441)
You know, the best part of this season hasn't been the Mets' dominance, Beltran's MVP season, or even the Braves' collapse. The best part of the season has been the emergence of Jose Reyes as an elite player. This is a guy who two years ago was called an injury prone Christian Guzman.

Beltran sure can play CF.
   92. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:26 PM (#2154442)
Beltran is Rico Suave. How can anyone be so smooth? Good inning by Trachs.
   93. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:30 PM (#2154446)
Mulder's lost it.
   94. Sam M. Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:30 PM (#2154447)
That was not good defense.
   95. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:30 PM (#2154448)
DELGADO!

Chris Duncan was really slow getting to that ball.
   96. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:31 PM (#2154449)
This is the Delgado from early in the season.
   97. Sam M. Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:32 PM (#2154450)
Mulder is coming back from the DL. I'm not sure you can judge where he'll be a month from now, yet. But it sure doesn't look good . . . .
   98. Joshemy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:35 PM (#2154456)
D-Wright!
   99. AJM Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:35 PM (#2154457)
D-Wright!
   100. Ska Posted: August 23, 2006 at 08:35 PM (#2154458)
We are nearly getting to the point where Reyes will have a higher average than Wright.

By the way, all you need to know about Shawn Green is that Reyes has more HRs and RBIs. Does that say more about Green or Reyes?
