Cubs are going for franchise win #10,000 today, and Pinella for #100 as Cubs manager.

Some hilarious quotes from Dempster in this article.
   2. Stevens Posted: April 23, 2008 at 12:27 PM (#2755732)
I'm curious what Hill's big curve will do in the rare air.
   3. McCoy Posted: April 23, 2008 at 04:01 PM (#2756018)
Cubs already have 10,076 wins as a franchise. They got 10,000 on June 3rd against their oldest rivals the Braves.
   4. Meatwad Posted: April 23, 2008 at 04:34 PM (#2756062)
this team has my hopes as high as i can remember. lets hope they keep rolling offensivly and the starting pitching comes around. if that happens they will run away with the division.

Not according to Baseball-reference or Cubs.com, McCoy.
   6. McCoy Posted: April 23, 2008 at 04:45 PM (#2756074)
but it is according to the truth.

Let the annual Cubs Collapse Watch begin!

You're counting postseason, McCoy? And BBreference isn't?

If otherwise, please explain.
   9. A Surfeit of Peaches Graham (SdeB) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 05:02 PM (#2756093)
but it is according to the truth.

You appear to be including the Chicago White Stockings' years as a National Association Franchise. I think it is resonable to leave those out.
   10. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2756381)
They showed the OBPs instead of averages for the Cubs lineup, likely because they're all over 400. Awesome.
   11. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2756388)
Let's go Team Dreck!
   12. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 08:56 PM (#2756441)
Fukudome still needs to prove himself.
   13. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2756446)
Fukudome can't keep on this rapid pace, but my god, he's such a breath of fresh air.
   14. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2756450)
I like Don Geovany. He hits home runs for the Cubs.
   15. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2756453)
I won't be surprised at all if he puts up an OBP north of .400.

I mean, he's no Ryan Church, but I still like him.
   16. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2756456)
I like Don Geovany. He hits home runs for the Cubs.

Doesn't count. Denver's got thin air.
   17. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2756460)
So this is what it's like to have a good hitting catcher. I know Barrett surprised us with his 2004 and 2005 seasons, but he's the kind of player who posted some impressive numbers even though you'd swear he always killed rallys and struck out on horrible pitches.
   18. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2756462)
It'll be good to get Soriano back in the lineup, so DeRosa can go back to not sucking.

Oh, wait--he's a Cub hitter other than Lee or Ramirez. He'll suck anyway.
   19. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2756488)
Hill needs to quit this missin' the strike zone crap.
   20. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2756503)
Odalis Perez is Washington's #1??? I had to check to make sure he was in the majors last year.
   21. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2756508)
On that note, if you asked me going by names alone why the Nats are doing so terribly, I'd say because their pitcing staff is horrendous. Their lineup has been even worse.
   22. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2756510)
Chris, they just stole your stat.
   23. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2756548)
It's disappointing that the Cubs are facing so many LHP (Morales and all lefties vs. the Nats). I mean, I think it's good, since the Cubs are well suited to face lefties, but I'd like to see Pie build off of his good coupla days. On the bright side, it should mean a lot of Cedeno coming up.
   24. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2756554)
Jeez...Soto is unbelievable.
   25. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2756565)
Man, he keeps hitting like this, he may even surpass the accomplishments of the great Brian Schneider.
   26. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2756578)
I just wish he were as good as Raul Casanova, though.
   27. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2756588)
Rich does not look great.
   28. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2756595)
Feck's sake, Nugent--Soto's just a rookie. Keep your expectations reasonable!
   29. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2756609)
Stealing third with 2 outs. Uh, OK. Quite the vote of confidence in Tulowitzki...
   30. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2756631)
Seems like a stupid risk going for 3rd there.
   31. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2756657)
The Rockies haven't really been able to square up the ball against hill. He hasn't looked great with the control or the Ks, but he has induced some weak popups and weak flyballs. I agree he doesn't look great, but even outside of the 0 runs on the board, he's been decent.
   32. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2756711)
We're gonna need some more runs, boys.
   33. Meatwad Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2756712)
how did the cubs score?
   34. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2756714)
Fukudome triple, DeRosa sac fly, Soto solo HR.

Lee triple, Ramirez double.
   35. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2756718)
Though they've only drawn a walk (an intentional one, at that), the Cubs have ensured that the starter doesn't make it into the seventh inning.
   36. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2756719)
I forgot how this felt.
   37. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2756721)
Well, ####!
   38. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2756723)
I was just thinking about how Piniella was overthinking this.
   39. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2756726)
Of course, the Rockies have blown a few late leads lately...
   40. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:33 PM (#2756730)
Yeah, I got a LaRussa vibe from that inning.
   41. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:35 PM (#2756732)
Brewers just took the lead in the bottom of the 8th. Think they'll go to Gagne?
   42. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:36 PM (#2756733)
If Reed Johnson could do that twice as often, he'd be a good player.
   43. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:37 PM (#2756734)
Lotta Cubs fans there in Denver.
   44. Meatwad Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2756738)
i dont think the rockies lead is gonna last long
   45. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:40 PM (#2756741)
Wow, does Holliday have a crap arm or something? I thought Johnson was toast.
   46. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:40 PM (#2756742)
That's huge.
   47. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:41 PM (#2756743)
Nice, nice. I like, I like.
   48. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2756744)
Indeed it is huge.

We've seen Cubs teams that get hot in April before, but there's something about this one...
   49. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2756745)
That sucked. I think you've gotta walk Fukudome here if you're Colorado.
   50. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2756747)
Looks like Piniella drank some Red Bull before this game.
   51. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2756752)
Buchholz did a great job there pitching to Ramirez.
   52. Meatwad Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2756757)
game day is super slow for me damn sportsline
   53. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2756758)
####
   54. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2756759)
Gameday is uber screwy tonight, but judging by Ryan's post, the results aren't good.
   55. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2756760)
Not that the DP was DeRosa's fault, but I hope this game will move Geo up to the 6 spot.
   56. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2756761)
Sounds like a case of bad luck. True?
   57. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2756762)
DeRosa lined into a DP. Right at Tulowitzki, Lee was about 8 feet off the bag, doubled off at 2nd.
   58. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2756764)
I'm guessing the double steal screwed up gameday, it's not great at handling non-standard plays it seems.
   59. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2756765)
Good game.

That was pretty lucky there for the Rockies.
   60. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2756766)
Yeah. DeRosa smoked that ball. Even if lee hadn't taken a step towards third, he'da probably been doubled off.
   61. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2756767)
Ramirez striking out completely changed the complexion of that inning.
   62. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2756771)
This might sound like sour grapes, but Tulowitzki looked completely off-balance on that homer. When he hit it, I thought for sure it'd stay in the park. Crediit where it's due, i guess, since Tulo managed to hit it out even though he was off-balance.
   63. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:51 PM (#2756775)
I'd have to go back and look at it, but the pitch Tulowitzki hit looked pretty good. He's a pretty good hitter.
   64. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:52 PM (#2756779)
Turnbow's closing for the Brewers tonight, if he blows this save, does Gagne wind up pitching the 9th in every game where they're up by 5 or less?
   65. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2756784)
Damn, I was kinda counting on Geo to get things going to tie it.
   66. Meatwad Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2756787)
i hope the don comes through here
   67. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2756788)
I'm a big Murton fanboy, but I'd be thinking about Pie as a pinch hitter.
   68. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:55 PM (#2756790)
Oh, nevermind, forgot it was a lefty pitching
   69. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:58 PM (#2756797)
Tulowitzki is really good. The pitch was towards the outside corner and Tulowitzki was out on his front foot. He slowed up a bit with his hands and hooked it out of the park. Reminded me a bit of a couple of Ramirez' homers last year. A few times, Ramirez would hook a ball on the outside corner a bit off balance. While he swung, I'd say to myself, "don't try to pull that pitch, take it the other way like DLee would," and he'd still hit it out.
   70. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:59 PM (#2756802)
Ugh. Murton continues to dig his grave.
   71. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 10:59 PM (#2756803)
Stick your elbow out there Reed!
   72. Meatwad Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:00 PM (#2756805)
i think game day is determined for me to read what happens here first
   73. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:00 PM (#2756806)
Murton's grave was dug a long time ago. There is nothing he can do to get out of it. That is, in this organization.
   74. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:05 PM (#2756809)
Well, they're having some deep at bats, but not much to show for them.
   75. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:07 PM (#2756812)
Yeah, this has been a good game, but the cards haven't fallen in the Cubs' favor. Yet.
   76. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:09 PM (#2756814)
Wow, that looked strike 3ish to me
   77. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:09 PM (#2756816)
Though, I can't complain after having Angel Hernandez and his random number generator strike zone.

That and he got the K anyway.
   78. Meatwad Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:11 PM (#2756820)

Go to the chatter for the first game against the Mets, meatwad.
   80. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:15 PM (#2756827)
Brew Crew held on, so if the Cubs don't want to lose ground, we need a rally.
   81. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:15 PM (#2756829)
whats with all the dreck comments iv missed the chatters as of late

Lucky you.
   82. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:16 PM (#2756831)
Well, the Cards managed to blow a 4-run lead to Pittsburgh. Cool.
   83. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2756832)
Yeeeegh, overmanage much Lou??
   84. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2756833)
Is it just me, or has Lee been hitting about 3 ropes a game for the last 2 weeks?
   85. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2756834)
I'd imagine Pie's gotta be stealing.
   86. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2756835)
Man, I don't know if I like this.
   87. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2756836)
Running for Lee? WTF?

I mean, if Ramirez gets on, I could see running for HIM.
   88. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2756837)
I know I don't like this.
   89. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2756838)
Pinch running for Lee? What's wrong with him?
   90. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2756839)
Nothing's wrong with Lee. There may very well be something wrong with Piniella.
   91. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2756840)
He's gotta be hurt. ####.
   92. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2756841)
I LIKE ARAMIS RAMIREZ HE HITS HOME RUNS FOR THE CUBS
   93. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2756842)
Lee's replacement is guaranteed to be slower and a worse glove. Unless he plans on putting Pie at first.
   94. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2756843)
WOW!
   95. retro-shiite Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2756844)
Oh hells yeah.
   96. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2756845)
"In play, run(s)"

The three sweetest words in the English language!
   97. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 11:20 PM (#2756846)
I wonder how they work the defense for the 9th. Pie to CF, Johnson to LF, DeRosa to 1B?
