Cubbies have had issues with the Nats in Washington over the years, so hopefully both team's respective starts will change that trend.
   2. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: April 25, 2008 at 01:07 PM (#2758661)
Yesterday was a definite off day for the offense. Here's hoping that was an abberation and not the beginning of a trend.

I would think Dempster should pitch well tonight. Although he didn't get the loss in either of his last 2 starts, he hasn't been as sharp. Too many walks.

I also hope yesterday was the beginning of the end of Theriot, starting SS. Cedeno needs to take that job from him.
   3. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 06:44 PM (#2758951)
Given how well he hits against LHP (.845 OPS over his career), the end of Theriot shouldn't come within the next three games. Speaking of which, as much as it sucks that Pie probably won't get a shot in CF due to Perez, Chico and Lannan, it's good that Ronny will get a few more days to show what he can do.
   4. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 06:47 PM (#2758955)
Of course, I suspect Ronny would get to show what he can do regardless, since Fontenot's not hitting all that well.
   5. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 07:03 PM (#2758970)
Rick Morrissey just said hat he'd bat Soriano 7th and that Alfonso only had one good month last year. I count three good months: a 1.076 OPS in June, an .862 in May and an 1.108 OPS in Sep/Oct. Another of the pre-game jackasses (Sullivan, I believe) just said that Soriano had a terrible season last year. It's a wonder that the Cubs aren't more dysfunctional given the stupidity of their writers.

As you said, it probably doesn't matter in the next few days, but I'd like to see more than 240 plate appearances from Theriot before concluding that he's essentially Edgar Renteria against LHP.
   7. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2759032)
Assuming the standard platoon advantage of 9% and that his talent vs. RHP is about in the range of a 700 OPS, Theriot's still a worthwhile player vs. LHP (OBP heavy 763 OPS). I think the truth is probably in the middle and that Theriot is probably capable of putting up a 720 OPS vs. RHP and a 785 vs. LHP. With the stolen bases and the good fielding percentage, I think he could be a capable, though less than ideal starter in the Major Leagues.

I don't disagree...but I could see the same thing for Cedeño.

Given his age and his youth relative to competition in AA and AAA, obviously, Cedeno's got a lot more upside than Theriot. That said, there's no way to know which will be better right now. I think Cedeno should be taking ABs away from Theriot right now, but I think Lou should just play the hot hand between the two of them.
   10. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2759073)
What a dumbass move.
   11. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2759076)
Well, he was safe, but he deserved to be called out for being such an idiot.
   12. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2759082)
Actually, when Zimmerman swiped the tag up, he pulled Theriot's hand off of the bag....

Scary plsy with Ramirez sliding head first into 1st there.

If Johnson tries that at home he breaks his neck.
   14. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2759247)
Does Lou pinch run for Aramis?
   15. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2759259)
I'd have let Cedeno hit here. Less of a double play risk, and you're only down one.
   16. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2759260)
Hmm, I would have preferred the Cedeño/Ayala matchup, I think.
   17. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:52 PM (#2759261)
I don't like this move.
   18. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2759265)
And, what AR said in 16. Cedeno's been hitting the tar out of the ball lately. Of course, Ward's more likely to hit a grand slam.

Oh, wait...
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2759266)
Crap, I've got a feeling how this will end. Should've just let Ronny hit.
   20. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2759267)
And it's Murton for Ward. Interesting.
   21. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2759268)
Okay, I guess I feel better about Murton vs. O'Connor, but it's not worth burning Ward.
   22. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2759269)
Murton should be taking three.
   23. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2759271)
GameDay makes it look like O'Connor's trying to issue an IBB.
   24. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:56 PM (#2759273)
Murton!
   25. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:56 PM (#2759275)
Well, that'll work.
   26. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:57 PM (#2759278)
O'Connor was making it look like he was trying to issue an IBB.
   27. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:57 PM (#2759279)
Of course, the PH switcheroo means we're now left with Hank White as the remaining PH.
   28. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2759282)
Fontenot for Blanco now?
   29. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2759284)
I was helping put my son to bed and listening on the radio when Reed Johnson made the catch -- was it as spectacular as the WGN broadcasters made it sound?
   30. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2759286)
Yes, indeed. Down to Pie on the bench now...
   31. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:00 PM (#2759287)
Well, he won't be lifting Soto, at least.
   32. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:00 PM (#2759289)
Pie is still available, yes?
   33. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:00 PM (#2759290)
I think if O'Connot hadn;t have looked so bad against Murton, Acta keeps him in against Blanco. Lots of managing going on in this inning, whihc I don't particularly like, but the Cubs seem to have gotten favorable matchups out of it.
   34. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2759292)
Fontenot sucks.
   35. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2759293)
Fontenot has turned back into a pumpkin.
   36. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2759294)
HBP here'd be nice.
   37. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2759298)
Glad they tied it but that's a golden wasted opportunity. Why the hell didn't Pie pinch-hit there?
   38. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2759299)
Well, that sucks. You burn through 4 PHs and get 4 runners on, you'd rather score more than once.
   39. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2759306)
MarmolAid. Generally a good thing...
   40. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:06 PM (#2759311)
...except when it isn't. Throw strikes already.
   41. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:07 PM (#2759316)
Any of you gents ever see Lynch's "Inland Empire"? That's one fecked up movie. It's kind of an odd backdrop to the GameDay/game chatter combo.
   42. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:08 PM (#2759322)
The Boudin Bros. are playing some crappy ball tonight.
   43. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:08 PM (#2759323)
Wow. Fontenot's the gift that keeps on giving. To the Nats.
   44. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:09 PM (#2759325)
UGH. This whole thing is turning out pretty unfortunate. Why not just leave Murton in LF and move DeRosa to 2B? Marmol could go in the pitcher's spot and the Cubs get another lineup spot before he's up again.
   45. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:09 PM (#2759326)
The Cubs have been kinda crappy in general these last 2 days, actually. Well, the pitching's been good.
   46. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2759329)
####.
   47. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2759336)
Carlos is having control issues tonight.
   48. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2759341)
Aaron Boone. Wow. Between him and Perez, this is a nice early-oughts nostalgia tour.
   49. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2759342)
Phew.
   50. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2759343)
And he swings at the first one after 4 straight not-close balls. Brilliant. Thank you.
   51. A Surfeit of Peaches Graham (SdeB) Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2759374)
So who's left on the bench for each team?
   52. retro-shiite Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2759394)
Christ. On 0-2. Howry's been awful this month.
   53. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2759398)
Well, the pitch was a ball. It was up, but it's hard to believe he opposite fielded that out.
   54. TerpNats Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:35 PM (#2759413)
Nieves? NIEVES?

An unlikely hero...

Cubbies have had issues with the Nats in Washington over the years, so hopefully both team's respective starts will change that trend.
Uh, the North Siders won six of seven from the Nationals last year, including three of four at RFK. True, the Nats won five of six at RFK the previous two years, but let's view the big picture.
   55. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:35 PM (#2759416)
So, in the span of probably 30 minutes I:

- found out this girl I was real interested in just got into a relationship
- listened to the Cubs lose in the ninth on the ride home
- ran over a possum
- came home to find out the Pistons (my home team) got DEMOLISHED

Not one of my finest hours.
   56. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: April 25, 2008 at 10:50 PM (#2759454)
Well, the pitch was a ball. It was up, but it's hard to believe he opposite fielded that out.

Exactly. When he started his swing, I thought he was struck out, since that ball was letter high. It's just one of those losses, which is going to happen. As much as I wish the Cubs would win 70%+ of their games this season, I doubt they will.
