Lunch time game ... I can dig it.

The team could really use a win here. Volquez gives up a lot of walks and strikes out a lot of guys, so if the Cubs can keep their patient approach, they should at least see a lot of runners. Then again, the book on a guy like Volquez (42K/18BB in 35 1/3 IP) may be to swing away early.

I'm amused by the sponsor on Volquez's bbref page ... "Baseball Time in Arlington sponsor(s) this page - Less than 72 hours after purchasing this page, the Rangers dealt Volquez to the Reds for Josh Hamilton. What a lucky guy I am."

Well, that's the best lineup possible at the moment, considering how everyone's playing. Not so for the Reds.
   5. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:26 PM (#2772157)
I don't remember if the Cubs won the last time they faced Edinson, but they made him work. He had close to 100 pitches in 5IP, IIRC.

Pie starting for 3 straight games, and Patterson/Hairston 1/2 for Cincy. Can you tell the difference between Lou and Dusty now, SSR?
   6. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:27 PM (#2772161)
Yep, I was right. He won, 9-2. Gave up 1 run in 5ip, 4bb and 7ks. 112 pitches. Great stuff, not the biggest guy, throws real hard. Reminds me of Juan Cruz.
   7. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:28 PM (#2772163)
Pie with three straight starts and Cedeno with his 2nd in a row. That's good, and I would hope end the Lou = Dusty comments for now.

Anyone know if Soriano is out for any particular reason, other than a day game after a night game? It seems like he might be starting to turn the corner a little bit offensively.
   8. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:32 PM (#2772169)
I hate that typing in "Felix Pie" directly into the bbref search engine doesn't bring up his player page. Damn Albert Felix Pierotti and his 26 2/3 career IP.
   9. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:34 PM (#2772171)
No idea on Soriano. Just turned on the radio, so I missed if Pat explained it when doing the lineups.

I'll be out for a while in the middle for lunch, watching the game. Not sure when though.
   10. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:38 PM (#2772179)
I've been surprised how poor the attendance has been so far in this series. Dusty ain't the draw he used to be.
   11. SteveM. Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:41 PM (#2772186)
Soriano is just getting a rest after playing six straight games.
Hairston at SS seems to be a real stretch to me.
   12. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:42 PM (#2772187)
Can't say I blame the people of Cincinnati, though, considering Dusty's got them playing at a 62 win clip right now and pulls stuff like Patterson/Hairston hitting 1-2.
   13. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:44 PM (#2772192)
Lee's really struggling right now.
   14. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:49 PM (#2772199)
Lee's really struggling right now.

Yeah, .214/.313/.250 over the past 7 games not including today. 1 GIDP (2 after that one) and 4 BB/3 K. Not surprising that the team hasn't won much in that span, especially with Aramis out for half of those games.

For a while it looked like Lee was going to repeat 2005, but that year he had virtually no slumps. Still, though, we'd have to be ecstatic with something even halfway between his production in 2007 and 2005.
   15. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:52 PM (#2772205)
Not only that, but he's not hitting the ball hard at all. Weak pop up or ground outs mostly, several in key situations. He'll snap out of it soon, and probably in a big way.
   16. Stevens Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:55 PM (#2772207)
Has Fukudome been less selective of late, or is it me?
   17. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 12:59 PM (#2772215)
It has seemed that way to me as well, Stevens. He's down to just over 4 pitches per PA. It had been as high as 5+ just a week or two ago, which must mean he's been seeing 3 or less recently.
   18. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:01 PM (#2772216)
Joey Votto: Cub killer.
   19. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:02 PM (#2772217)
Adam Dunn: Cub killer.

Those are their first earned runs of the series.
   20. Stevens Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:02 PM (#2772219)
Likewise for Adam Dunn, Moses.
   21. Dan Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:02 PM (#2772220)
That looked like a replay of Votto. I almost thought it was.
   22. Stevens Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:03 PM (#2772221)
...beat me to it. : )

Weeks: yeah, it's just felt like he's gone first pitch more than few times recently.
   23. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:04 PM (#2772225)
Gabor: Cub killer???
   24. Stevens Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:04 PM (#2772227)
This was "Paul" Bako, right?

The Reds might be the absolute worst team to match up Lieber with.

Hairston? I mean, come on!
   35. Moe Greene Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:10 PM (#2772245)
This is comical. Paul Bako and Jerry Hairston go deep in the same inning.
   36. SteveM. Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:15 PM (#2772253)
Thank God this ballpark is a joke. 5-0 is not insurmountable here.
   37. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:16 PM (#2772254)
In ~700 ABs with the Cubs: Hairston + Bako = 5 HRs.

In ~120 ABs with the Reds: Hairston + Bako = 5 HRs.
   38. Stevens Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:16 PM (#2772257)
Is Lieber in the on-deck circle?
   39. Meatwad Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:19 PM (#2772261)
leiber is done for the day
   40. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:20 PM (#2772265)
No matter how this game turns out, I like that Lou isn't afraid to go to the bullpen early. A lot of managers would leave Lieber in there to try to get 2 or 3 more innings from him, all the while turning a 5 run deficit into 7 or 8 runs.
   41. Stevens Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:25 PM (#2772270)
Thanks Meat.
   42. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:32 PM (#2772286)
What was the point of Votto's SB there?
   43. Stevens Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:37 PM (#2772292)
What was the point of Votto's SB there?

He's in his own fantasy league and needs more SBs?
   44. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:49 PM (#2772303)
Well, as I guessed upthread, the Cubs are getting their fair share of base runners by being patient. Unfortunately they're just not converting them right now.
   45. Meatwad Posted: May 07, 2008 at 01:54 PM (#2772309)
come on rain out
   46. Cabbage Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:05 PM (#2772318)
rain is about to hit. Might go on for some time.
   47. Bunny Vincennes Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:07 PM (#2772321)
What was Ramirez doing swinging at that pitch?
   48. Dan Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:11 PM (#2772329)
HOly ####
   49. Dan Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:12 PM (#2772330)
It's pretty fortunate to have only allowed 7 runs on 6 home runs, I guess.
   50. Cabbage Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:13 PM (#2772331)
and Junior still waits.
   51. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:39 PM (#2772364)
Ugly.
   52. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:40 PM (#2772367)
Well that's just ridiculous.
   53. Moe Greene Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:41 PM (#2772370)
There goes any chance of Hatteberg starting for the rest of the year.
   54. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2772374)
I'd rather my starter walked 4 in 2/3 of an inning than give up 4 HRs in 2 innings.

Hill had a good little start last night at AAA. 5 Ks, 1 BB, 1 HR and 2 runs in 5 innings or so.
   55. Sweet Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2772375)
Wind's blowing out at 20+ mph, so 9 runs for the Reds isn't that surprising, but it's a little shocking that the Cubs have hung all zeros thus far. Volquez's park-adjusted game score would be off the charts.
   56. Thomas Richard Hamilton Nugent Posted: May 07, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2772384)
I don't think you really have to be a pitch count nazi to wonder why Volquez is still out there.
   57. Weeks T. Olive Posted: May 07, 2008 at 03:00 PM (#2772389)
Wow, Howry's only pitched twice since Apr. 25. That surprised me.
   58. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 07, 2008 at 03:00 PM (#2772390)
Volquez goes 118 up 9.

Gameday says it's 21 MPH R to L.

Gameday has David Weathers throwing twelve straight sliders. WTF?

Gonna have to settle for 3.

Epic comeback now.

Seven walks in such an offensively pathetic game is encouraging. Some XBHs would have been nice.
