My tolerance is almost non-existent after last night's debacle.
   2. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 01:45 PM (#2794017)
Good thing we don't have that pesky instant replay.
   3. Carl Spongberg Posted: May 25, 2008 at 02:06 PM (#2794026)
I missed the start of this great game. At least we have Henry Blanco. A living and breathing ball-hitting-machine, if ever there was one.
   4. Carl Spongberg Posted: May 25, 2008 at 02:09 PM (#2794029)
Things are looking up. Here’s hoping that the only things Lilly gives up are solo homeruns.
   5. Eric J Posted: May 25, 2008 at 02:24 PM (#2794030)
Seriously? Two homers by Luis Rivas? Has to be the first multi-homer game of his career, right?
   6. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 02:35 PM (#2794034)
I am still not over last night. I watched Dusty Baker manage for 4 years, and that was still some of the most braindead managing I've ever witnessed.
   7. Carl Spongberg Posted: May 25, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2794035)
Rivas certainly has Lilly figured out.
   8. Meatwad Posted: May 25, 2008 at 02:39 PM (#2794037)
last night was very annoying, lee coulda won the game for them if he had stayed in
   9. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 02:50 PM (#2794046)
It's Luis ####### Rivas!

I need about a week off from this ####.
   11. Sweet Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:03 PM (#2794093)
Looks like Marmol's going to pitch the ninth in a one-run save situtation today. I approve.
   12. Sweet Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:08 PM (#2794102)
Wonder whether we're seeing Theriot's annual descent into mediocrity. He's shed nearly 30 points from his batting average over the past 10 games.
   13. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:09 PM (#2794104)
Marmol's pitching the 9th cause Wood threw 2 innings last night after pitching a meaningless inning the night before. If Marmol locks this down, I'm not sure I'll be able to handle the teeming masses calling for Marmol as the new closer.
   14. Sweet Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:14 PM (#2794108)
I don't want Marmol to be the closer, but I do want him to pitch in the highest-leverage situations. To Lou's credit, Marmol has the highest Leverage rating on the team this year, a shade ahead of Wood's.
   15. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:16 PM (#2794110)
what the ####.
   16. Meatwad Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:16 PM (#2794112)
wow way to ####### go sori
   17. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:17 PM (#2794114)
You have to be ####### kidding me. #### you, Soriano.
   18. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:18 PM (#2794116)
Yeah, I understood your point Sweet, was talking about the sports talk radio crowd. I'd love for Lou to use Marmol like this, but I think this is really more by accident than anything else.
   19. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:18 PM (#2794117)
Brenly just outright called Soriano a bad defender.
   20. Sweet Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:19 PM (#2794118)
He dropped the ball. Unreal. Shades of freakin' Brant Brown.

####.
   21. Carl Spongberg Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:19 PM (#2794119)
I don’t believe it. Shoddy fielding, nervous pitching. Shouldn’t they steam-roll the Pirates? They had such a momentum going against them.
   22. Sweet Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:20 PM (#2794122)
A double? Uh, yeah, right. That scorer should be ashamed.
   23. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:21 PM (#2794124)
Lee-Ramirez-5th place hitter Reed Johnson.
   24. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:21 PM (#2794125)
At least Brenly didn't sugarcoat it. Kudos, Bob.
   25. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:23 PM (#2794127)
Christ--just tuning in now. I missed Soriano's error.

And am I reading the box score correctly? Luis ####### Rivas has 2 home runs today?
   26. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:23 PM (#2794128)
At least last year, Soriano was just total ass on balls hit to the wall.
   27. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:25 PM (#2794131)
Yep, the offense should be worthless for at least a few more innings.

This is odd, I'm happy with Jim Edmonds pinch hitting. That's how inept Reed Johnson is against righties.
   28. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:25 PM (#2794132)
So, um, yeah. Why's Johnson/TOFU hitting 5th?
   29. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:26 PM (#2794134)
Brenly is ####### pissed.
   30. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:27 PM (#2794135)
Please release Edmonds. He's DONE.
   31. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:27 PM (#2794136)
Edmonds had a -20 OPS+ with the Cubs entering that AB.

Soto got the day off after catching 14 innings last night. And Lou thinks Reed Johnson is pretty much the greatest player this side of Ryan Theriot.
   32. Carl Spongberg Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:27 PM (#2794137)
Ryan, I am inclined to agree with you. Outs made from the other side are a lot prettier.
   33. 100 Years is Nothing Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:31 PM (#2794141)
The real key is can he drop a fly ball with 2 outs in the nionth? If he can't be that clutch, they should release him now.
   34. 100 Years is Nothing Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:31 PM (#2794139)

Jason Michaels just screamed f uck after taking strike 2.
   36. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:34 PM (#2794143)
Marmol goes 40+ pitches. He'll be unavailable tomorrow.
   37. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:35 PM (#2794144)
Yeah, I got the "Soto getting the day off" part. Somehow, I don't see how that compels the "Reed Johnson bats 5th" part. Lou does seem to like his scrappy white guys.

At what point do we say Soriano needs a late-inning defensive replacement? He's been spectacularly awful this year.
   38. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:35 PM (#2794145)
I was thinking that, Ryan. I won't get to see Marmol tomorrow. Hell, might not get to see him Tuesday.
   39. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:36 PM (#2794147)
Oh, bullshite. He didn't swing at that.
   40. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:37 PM (#2794149)
Those Pirate unis are sharp. They should wear those more often.
   41. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:39 PM (#2794151)
With the 0 for 5, Fuku's batting average is down to .301. Believe that's the lowest it's been this year.
   42. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:41 PM (#2794153)
Come on Don.
   43. 100 Years is Nothing Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2794155)
The Pirate announcers said about bay's catch "That's a heck of a play - it saved a double"
   44. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:43 PM (#2794157)
That's actually really funny.
   45. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:45 PM (#2794158)
The Pirates announcers have a wicked sense of humor
   46. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:45 PM (#2794159)
This road trip has made me feel like it's 2006 again or something. Teams go through rough patches, but I just HATE how this team looks right now.
   47. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:45 PM (#2794161)
GameDay called it an error. Guess it's their little bit of rebellion.

I turned the TV on about 10 minutes afterwards, so I still haven't seen it.
   48. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:46 PM (#2794162)
I can't believe some of the balls hit up the middle that go for hits with Theriot at SS.
   49. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:46 PM (#2794163)
The Cubs will not win this game.
   50. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2794165)
The Pirates announcers have a wicked sense of humor

Watching your team put up 15 straight losing seasons, I suppose you either develop one or go insane.

I think it'd be hilarious if Rivas won this with his 3rd homer.

This road trip has made me feel like it's 2006 again or something.

I was just thinking that in close games lately, the Cub offense reverts to its 2006 form.
   52. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:51 PM (#2794169)
Pathetic.
   53. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:51 PM (#2794170)
The Cubs have done a great job to help ruin my 4 day weekend.
   54. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:51 PM (#2794172)
#### you, Sori. Shove that game-winning ball up your alligator-armed iron-gloved ass.
   55. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:52 PM (#2794173)
So, anyone wanna go to the ballpark on Tuesday or Wednesday?
   56. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:53 PM (#2794174)
Can't we at least shoot Soriano and get some glue out of this mess?
   57. Carl Spongberg Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:54 PM (#2794175)
At least this one only took 11 innings. What a bad series this was.
   58. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:54 PM (#2794176)
After Ryan Ludwick hits his 3rd HR of the day against the Dodgers to give the Cardinals a walk-off win we'll be knocked out of first for the first time since May 10th.
   59. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:55 PM (#2794177)
OK, they just showed the "double." Christ jesus.

Hey, retro?

Is there any possible way you could fix your username? It freaks me out...on threads where you've got multiple posts it looks like I accidentally clicked through to some Chinese language page my browser can't process.
   61. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:57 PM (#2794179)
In all seriousness, I honestly don't think I can watch this team if Soriano sticks around for more than half of his contract. My blood pressure can't handle it. A collective four or five weeks of unreal hitting isn't the worth the horrible at-bats, shaky defense, and retarded fundamentals that come with the package.
   62. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:57 PM (#2794180)
OK, I hadn't realized there were two out at the time. Now I'm even more pissed.
   63. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:58 PM (#2794181)
There was also two strikes.

Yeah, it does that on my office PC, too, though on my home Mac it shows up as question marks.

Normally, I'd keep it that way just knowing it freaks you out, but since you and I go way back, I'll change it.
   65. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 04:59 PM (#2794184)

Wow. Marmol didn't get the K? He sucks.

I was going to gloat, but I thought about it a little more and, really, no fan deserves that. Sorry, dudes.
   67. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 05:01 PM (#2794187)
We have Alfonso Soriano for another six-and-a-half years. We should be pardoned of any further pain.
   68. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: May 25, 2008 at 05:03 PM (#2794189)
My initial dismay at the Nats losing Soriano (and taking the draft pick instead) was buoyed significantly when I discovered that he signed an 8 year deal. My god, that was never going to work out well.
   69. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 05:03 PM (#2794190)
As an aside, I don't think I've been this upset over a game this year. I think it's the culmination of a horrible week on the road, but the game's been over for 20 minutes and I'm still livid. These last two games remind me of that double-header against the Pirates in 2004 where the Cubs made a late comeback in Game 1, only to lose it on a Tike Redman walk-off slam. So then they had Hawkins try to close out Game 2 and they lost it, too.

Well, I suppose Tike Redman's subsequently shattered dreams should give us some solace.
   71. retro-shiite Posted: May 25, 2008 at 05:09 PM (#2794192)
The ultimate Cub loss was in '91 at Pittsburgh in extra innings, naturally. Cubs led 7-2 going to the bottom of the eighth, gave up 4 in the 8th, one in the 9th to tie it. They then scored 5 in the top of the 11th to go up 12-7, and allowed 6 in the bottom of the inning.

That was Rob Mackowiak you're thinking of, another replacement-level scrub who started tons of games in center for the Bucs. His dreams are slightly less shattered -- he's still in the majors, with the Nationals I think.
   74. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 05:19 PM (#2794198)
Ah yes. Redman started the rally with a leadoff triple.

Ah yes. Redman started the rally with a leadoff triple.

Yeah, I'd forgotten that part, but Retrosheet refreshed my memory... I can imagine that doubleheader was devastating for Cubs fans, but that night was by far the most fun I've ever had at a ballpark. We sat in the cheap bleacher seats next to the bullpen; our whole section spent a lot of time ragging on Borowski (during the first game) and Beltran (the second game), so it was delicious when they were the ones that gave up the walkoff homers.

Of course, the rest of the season was awful as always.
   77. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 05:30 PM (#2794207)
No it wasn't. I remember they lost the next night, too.
   78. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2008 at 05:31 PM (#2794209)
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that first game of the doubleheader was the one where Matt Clement walked/hit a combination of like four or five batters in one inning.
