Let's get the big blue train back on the rails.
   2. Cabbage Posted: July 02, 2008 at 12:23 PM (#2840330)
In the spirit of Cubly brotherhood, let us refer to it as the Peace Train.
   3. SteveM. Posted: July 02, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2841179)
Lonely in here tonight.
   4. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2008 at 10:33 PM (#2841225)
I'm not getting the game on TV, so I don't know how much I'll contribute. I'm keeping tabs on the Rays/Sox game on ESPN. This series makes me feel less anguish about getting swept by the Rays a couple weeks ago.
   5. SteveM. Posted: July 02, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2841248)
The Rays are a friggin good team. They should be battling the Red Sox all season.
   6. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2841254)
I thought I was bad at times when the Cubs are stinking up the joint. Some of the Sox fans in that chatter are borderline embarrassing. They're losing against the best team in baseball, but the way some are reacting in there, you'd swear they were getting smashed up by the Nationals or something.
   7. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2841283)
That's a pretty shitty way to get a run. Good to get on the board, but talk about a real promising inning going in the toilet just like that.
   8. SteveM. Posted: July 02, 2008 at 10:48 PM (#2841300)
My son said it best best-that Edmonds sure does walk a lot. I think Murton is getting tonight to try and impress Lou and Hendry to stay up when Johnson comes off the DL.
   9. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2008 at 10:52 PM (#2841315)
I just want Murton to succeed at this point to optimize what little trade value he has left.
   10. SteveM. Posted: July 02, 2008 at 11:00 PM (#2841353)
If Murton will ever have trade value again, he has to drive the ball like he did Monday. That weak grounder to start the double play has been all too typical of what he has become as a hitter.
   11. SteveM. Posted: July 02, 2008 at 11:50 PM (#2841545)
Edmonds with yet another homer. I think its safe to say he is not washed up,
   12. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 02, 2008 at 11:51 PM (#2841548)
And at the very least, it was a wise investment.
   13. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:05 AM (#2841596)
Just when I thought I could maybe sneak off to bed.
   14. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:08 AM (#2841609)
On a positive note, David Riske entered the game and promptly gave up the tying run on the first pitch he threw.
   15. Sweet Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:14 AM (#2841629)
Edmonds now batting .295/.385/.600 in 122 PAs with the Cubs. Staggering.
   16. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:15 AM (#2841635)
Be very nice to get another run here. And as I type that, The Riot gets plunked hard. I hope he is not hurt, the Cubs seemingly have become a MASH unit.
   17. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:16 AM (#2841639)
Ouch. I guess it just knocked the wind out of him. Not something you see every day from a HBP.
   18. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:21 AM (#2841658)
Alright, Geo got back those two runs.
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:24 AM (#2841671)
Glaus just hit a walk-off in St. Louis. Gotta hang on here, boys.
   20. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:24 AM (#2841673)
Cardinals won, ugh.
   21. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:26 AM (#2841679)
Brewers just took the lead in the 9th. The DBacks are feckin' useless.
   22. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:28 AM (#2841686)
Indeed. Starting to look like a win will only keep pace with everyone else. That's fine. A road win's a road win.
   23. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:28 AM (#2841689)
The D'Backs lose, they'll be in first place with a sub-.500 record.
   24. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:30 AM (#2841693)
Indeed. Starting to look like a win will only keep pace with everyone else. That's fine. A road win's a road win.

Yep. I'll take a .600 winning percentage for over half a season, even if it's been .400 over the last two weeks.

I'm relishing the thought of having Z and Ramirez back in the next 2 days.

Oh, yeah--and SYTH, too. Yippee.
   25. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:30 AM (#2841694)
My son and I have been debating the Cubs hats tonights. We have come to the conclusion they are cool.
   26. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:32 AM (#2841699)
So what's the theme with the hats tonight?
   27. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:33 AM (#2841701)
Patriotism.
   28. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:34 AM (#2841703)
You mean they're wearing their red, white and blue hats tonight? How surprising!
   29. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:34 AM (#2841704)
####### Marmol.
   30. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:34 AM (#2841706)
My guess is that with Edmonds having emerged, SYTH's role will be re-evaluated. And you could do worse with a utility OF.
   31. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:34 AM (#2841707)
Gah--Conor Jackson just missed a 2-run homer.
   32. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:35 AM (#2841708)
Ray ####### Durham?
   33. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:35 AM (#2841709)
What the #### is wrong with Marmol???

And I think I'm with Brenly, I'm not sure that was a HR.
   34. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:35 AM (#2841710)
####### Marmol.
   35. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:36 AM (#2841713)
Let's wait to see another item in the press about how Dempster can't win on the road.
   36. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:36 AM (#2841714)
What the hell is wrong with Marmol? I cut him some slack for the Tampa Bay meltdown and chalked the Quentin homer up to the wind and a good hitter, but RAY DURHAM? ####.
   37. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:37 AM (#2841719)
1. Marmol was used like a rented mule for two months.
2. Marmol might not be quite as good as he was in those two months.
   38. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:37 AM (#2841720)
His ERA's up to 3.59.
   39. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:37 AM (#2841721)
The worst part is all that happened with two outs.
   40. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:37 AM (#2841722)
Its mental, its not physical. He is throwing as hard as ever
   41. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:38 AM (#2841724)
5 runs not being enough to win in this park against this lineup is unacceptable.
   42. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:39 AM (#2841727)
Cub-killer Chris Young grounds into a DP to end the game. ####.
   43. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:39 AM (#2841728)
Marmol might not be quite as good as he was in those two months.

No, but he doesn't need to be; he doesn't need to have an ERA of .8 or whatever.
   44. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:39 AM (#2841730)
Well, the Mets and D'Backs both pissed leads away nicely tonight.
   45. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:40 AM (#2841731)
That's not acceptable, Steve. We've already got one mentally frazzled pitcher.
   46. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:40 AM (#2841732)
You know, this game was going pretty well until I showed up.
   47. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:41 AM (#2841734)
Dammit Jim, I'm a country doctor, not a shrink.

Should I mention I am a huge nerd?
   48. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:43 AM (#2841736)
FONTEYES
   49. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:43 AM (#2841737)
I bow before the mighty Fontenot.
   50. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:43 AM (#2841738)
Mike Fontenote, eh? I guess it's the night of homers from unlikely heroes.
   51. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:44 AM (#2841740)
I assume it'll be Howry in the eighth?
   52. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:44 AM (#2841741)
Fontenot. Jesus.

Whether or not that Durham homer was actually homer, that was an awful pitch from Marmol.
   53. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:45 AM (#2841742)
Hell, at this point I wouldn't be surprised to see Ray Fontenot homer.
   54. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:46 AM (#2841743)
Fukudome really does crowd the plate, doesn't he.
   55. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:46 AM (#2841744)
I hated Ray Fontenot. One of my least favorite Cubs of all time.

One run lead, bottom 8. Just bring in Marm...oh, wait.
   56. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:46 AM (#2841745)
You know, I still have trouble spelling Fontenot's name correctly after all this time.

I've been watching the Durham homer on Gameday's crappy video, so it's tough to tell if it was a homer or not, but it's close.
   57. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:47 AM (#2841746)
I'm still wondering why Fukudome's hit so badly on the road. His road numbers are just wretched.
   58. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:47 AM (#2841747)
Wasn't that Ray Jay Fontenot? Don't call call me Ray, don't call me jay, call Ray Jay.
   59. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:48 AM (#2841748)
With Marmol pitching badly, I don't much care for our middle relief.
   60. Moses Taylor, Optimist Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:49 AM (#2841750)
Marmol needs a week off. For his arm and his head.
   61. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:49 AM (#2841751)
Wasn't that Ray Jay Fontenot? Don't call call me Ray, don't call me jay, call Ray Jay.

God bless the south.
   62. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:50 AM (#2841752)
I stole it from The Simpsons. I spent way too much time in grad school.
   63. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:50 AM (#2841753)
Ray Fontenot's full name is actually Silton Ray Fontenot.

Silton?
   64. Moses Taylor, Optimist Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:50 AM (#2841754)
It was a homer. No doubt in my mind. The fan reached over the roof, but his arm aint 5 feet long.
   65. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:51 AM (#2841755)
In 52 career plate appearances, Ray Fontenot had two hits, both singles.

Okay, here's what's weird. He had one plate appearance with the Twins, after he was traded in'86. WTF?
   66. Moses Taylor, Optimist Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:53 AM (#2841758)
Wait a second, wasn't it marmol that got hit by that foul ball in the hand earlier in the game? I was at a bar so I'm not sure.
/grasping at straws

Maybe horwy is unsucky now?
   67. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:53 AM (#2841759)
Good work by Howry.
   68. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:53 AM (#2841760)
Unless you are a big guy, Silton seems like one of those names that will get you beat up on the playground.
   69. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:55 AM (#2841761)
Ray Fontenot's full name is actually Silton Ray Fontenot.

His middle name was Ray? That explains it. I always associate the middle name of "Ray" with serial murderers. Same with "Wayne". Appropriate for Fontenot.
   70. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:55 AM (#2841762)
The ASB is coming at a good time for Marmol. I haven't felt comfortable with him in a game since that Tampa Bay catastrophe. He's running into some bad luck and his command issues seem to be mental, so some time off is what the doctor ordered. It'd be nice if he could get in some games the Cubs were up big in, but this hasn't really been a blowout type of team.
   71. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:55 AM (#2841764)
So if this score holds up, Marmol gets the win. Ha.
   72. Moses Taylor, Optimist Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:56 AM (#2841765)
That chic in the cubs hat by the cubs pen is probably getting some great upclose pictures of kerru-ass.
   73. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:57 AM (#2841767)
Moses, are you totally tanked?
   74. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:58 AM (#2841769)
I was wondering that myself Retro.
   75. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:58 AM (#2841771)
You could say he's positively tanked!
   76. Moses Taylor, Optimist Posted: July 03, 2008 at 12:59 AM (#2841772)
Not totally. But drunk enough to know I'm hilarious.
   77. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:00 AM (#2841773)
But drunk enough to know I'm hilarious.

Good thing you noticed--I might've missed it otherwise!
   78. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:00 AM (#2841774)
The Worst Pitcher in the history of baseball on the DL for the pirates.(Sorry if I screwed that up retro)

I just love forcing that nickname into chatters.
   79. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:01 AM (#2841775)
I noticed on the news scroll on Gameday that Eric Byrnes might be done for the year. That Quentin trade just keeps getting better for them, doesn't it?
   80. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:01 AM (#2841776)
Latroy Hawkins is pitching for the Pirates?
   81. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:02 AM (#2841777)
Hey, Derrek Lee is still not very good.
   82. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:02 AM (#2841778)
No, you got it right, Ryan, except for failing to capitalize "history" and "baseball." Give the man the respect his title deserves.
   83. Moses Taylor, Optimist Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:02 AM (#2841779)
Someone mentioned them earlier but I'm not a fan of the "Go America!" hats.
   84. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:02 AM (#2841780)
Oh, Latroy. I wish I had been around here for the Latroy Hawkins: Closer days.
   85. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:03 AM (#2841781)
I just love forcing that nickname into chatters.

I didn't even realize at the time that I'd coined a classic.
   86. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:09 AM (#2841782)
Moses Taylor hates America.
   87. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:09 AM (#2841783)
I've concluded that in addition to another very good starter, the Cubs need to add a bullpen arm. I don't expect Marmol to stay like this, but if he's questionable, our bullpen suddenly becomes Kerry Wood.
   88. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:10 AM (#2841784)
Somebody mentioned this somewhere, but I'm really surprised at how into these games the Giants fans are.
   89. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:11 AM (#2841785)
I would love to add someone like Fuentes-an elite set-up man or a 2nd closer.
   90. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:11 AM (#2841786)
I hate when BTF does that.
   91. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:12 AM (#2841787)
Moses Taylor hates America.

Yes, but is he a filthy, filthy whore?
   92. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:12 AM (#2841788)
I hate to say it, but Wood is so going to blow out his arm again.
   93. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:13 AM (#2841789)
Oh for god's sake.
   94. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:14 AM (#2841790)
I hate to read it Andere.
   95. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:14 AM (#2841792)
Kerry Wood is a filthy whore.
   96. Moses Taylor, Optimist Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:14 AM (#2841794)
Cubs win.

America, #### yeah.
   97. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:14 AM (#2841795)
Thank god. Lord knows we didn't need to see Ray Durham again tonight.
   98. SteveM. Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:15 AM (#2841796)
Cubs win! I know he gave up taht triple, but Wood looked nasty against that last hitter.
   99. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:15 AM (#2841797)
Just enjoy the ride while it lasts, SSR.
   100. retro-shiite Posted: July 03, 2008 at 01:15 AM (#2841798)
Kerry really shouldn't do that to me.

I dunno, AR--it's certainly possible, but it seems to me the lesser workload's what he needed.
