His middle name is Leroy?!

who's isn't?
   3. Stevens Posted: July 03, 2008 at 11:42 AM (#2842007)
Oops. Whose.

Oops. Wasn't that funny anyway.

Oops. Be quiet now, Stevens.

Also, I fear Tim Lincecum.

Lincecum's draft history:

June 3, 2003: Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 48th round of the 2003 amateur draft, but did not sign.

June 7, 2005: Drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 42nd round of the 2005 amateur draft, but did not sign.

June 6, 2006: Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 1st round (10th pick) of the 2006 amateur draft. Player signed June 30, 2006.

Smart moves by him.

This guy shows up on his Comp List: http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/burnsoy01.shtml

Which is kinda cool.

#### i didnt know this was a 4 game set, well this is a must win.
   7. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 06:33 PM (#2842370)
Lincecum did allow 8 baserunners in his last outing. I want to believe that the Cubs can turn 8 baserunners into more runs than the A’s managed.
   8. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 07:07 PM (#2842386)
Welcome back Reed.
   9. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 07:14 PM (#2842392)
A run to begin the game and forcing Lincecum to throw 20. Not at all bad, Cubs, not at all bad.
   10. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 07:19 PM (#2842401)
Hey, Gallagher! Throw some strikes, why don’t you?
   11. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 07:21 PM (#2842402)
That’s the spirit.
   12. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 07:35 PM (#2842446)
Now that’s going to make the game a lot harder to win. 1-1 means they’re going to have to score on Lincecum again. I don’t like the odds of that.
   13. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2842476)
Just wonderful baseballery all around. Giving up two out hits to the pitcher, fielding errors, allowing four runs. This game has all the markings of a fun one.

This plate umpire is the least consistent one I've seen in ages. What's with the guy?
   15. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:10 PM (#2842530)
Go Giants!
   16. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2842618)
DeRosa! Please team get back into the game.
   17. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2842621)
Oh well. One has to assume that that’s it for Lincecum.
   18. Andere Richtingen is a Maverick Posted: July 03, 2008 at 08:59 PM (#2842678)
Fukudome has seen 32 of the 120 pitches thrown in this game.
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2842696)
Derrek Lee sucks. Not really, but he hasn't gotten a clutch hit in so long.
   20. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2842697)
Frustrating inning. But this game is far from over, I hope.
   21. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2842710)
Ultra-quick hook by Piniella here, going from Ascaino to Marmol after two hitters.
   22. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2842713)
Right now I’m not sure I trust Marmol in a situation like this.
   23. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2842722)
Marmol really has dissolved quickly. Wow.
   24. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2842725)
That's it for Marmol. Cotts.
   25. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2842728)
#### Marmol.
   26. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2842733)
I remember when the bullpen could be relied upon to keep a game close. Marmol really has fallen of a cliff in the last month or so.
   27. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2842735)
The question is whether he'll rebound.
   28. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2842753)
I’m at a loss what to do with him. He hasn’t been able to handle low pressure situations and he hasn’t been able to handle high pressure situations. Should they use him as a mop-up guy or send him down? In his last 5 innings (including the 0 from today) he’s given up 10 runs. And that doesn’t count the inherited runners he allowed to score today.
   29. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2842756)
Aurilia seemingly spitting on the sliders, and waiting on the fastball didn't help Marmol. I don't think he's the first guy to do that lately, either.
   30. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2842764)
That's the thing I was worried about with Marmol. People wait start to wait on those sliders, which are more times than not balls, and then sit on the fastball.
   31. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2842769)
And with Marmol's location being off lately, those sliders are even more likely/obvious to be balls.
   32. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2842776)
So he can’t throw his slider for strikes and his fastball seems to has lost a few miles. I hope he can recover, but he has been used a lot.
   33. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2842798)
Well, even when he was dominant, Marmol's slider usually wasn't thrown for a strike - but batters were still swinging at it, with little success.

If some batters started to make a concerted effort to lay off sliders, and only offer at fastballs, they might have better luck against Marmol.

If that attempt at patience roughly coincided with Marmol's location worsening (which would make it easier to ignore the slider, due to it more obviously NOT being a strike), the combination of the two would make things rougher on Marmol.

This is not a fun team to follow on the road. Let’s hope they can escape St Louis without too many bruises and then look forward to the six game homestand before the ASB.
   35. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2842829)
Brewers are done on the road until the ASB. 10 game homestand!
(they have the second best home record in the league behind the Cubs, but they've been better on the road so far)
   36. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2842831)
better on the road then the Cubs, I mean
   37. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2842846)
Cards are getting clobbered. Yeoh. LaRussa is doing to Boggs what he did to Marquis a few times - let him get hammered to save the bullpen.
   38. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2842848)
At least the Brewers threw away the game in the 9th inning today and at least St Louis are in a deep hole already.
   39. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2842852)
Osiris Matos? At least he’s got a great name.
   40. NTNgod Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:46 PM (#2842860)
Beforehand, I was expecting to lose the Webb game - just not in that fashion.

I didn't follow the game, so I wasn't surprised when I saw the final score. It was the way it happened that threw me.
   41. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:47 PM (#2842863)
Any other year I would have turned my back on this game after the 7th.
   42. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2842869)
Didn’t Gagné throw a scoreless inning? That certainly surprised everyone involved.
   43. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2842876)
Losing to Lincecum is not the most shameful thing. Losing to him in this fashion might be, though.
