I guess it's better than Johnson leading off.
   3. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 02:03 PM (#2844237)
I guess Lou doesn't want Fukudome to hit anywhere but 2nd in preparation for Soriano's return. Theriot's probably the best option there if that's the case.
   4. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2844251)
Missed last night's chatter, but I'd echo Coorey's comments--the home plate ump last night had a good, consistent strike zone until the 9th; I actually thought to myself that he was doing a particularly good job not being fooled by balls curving around the plate. As for the 9th, well--I'll take the win and all, but strike 2 to Glaus was nowhere close to being a strike, not borderline, not even arguably; it was a terrible call. I'd've been livid if I were Glaus too. (Strike 3 was closer, but still off the plate; I suppose given where strike 2 got called, Glaus should've been swinging.)

That said, the pitching last night was terrific. Let's see more of the same today out of Theodore Roosevelt III.
   5. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 02:47 PM (#2844253)
I guess I'm not getting the hate re Theriot hitting leadoff. His OBP's in the .380s, where it's been all year (when it hasn't been even higher). With the uptick in his walk rate, he's perfectly acceptable leading off.
   6. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 05, 2008 at 02:48 PM (#2844255)
It's just a matter of me expecting the other shoe to drop given his walk rate in prior seasons.
   7. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2844272)
Well, the Cubs seem to have experienced a team-wide uptick in walks, so I'm not sure how much he'll regress, but even if he does, fine. Lou never sticks long with what doesn't work, and Soriano's back in a couple weeks anyway.
   8. Giantandre Posted: July 05, 2008 at 03:53 PM (#2844289)
I only get the game on Fox Sports Espanol .... Should be an improvement on the announcing
   9. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: July 05, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2844297)
Theriot's walk rate this season is pretty much exactly the same as his minor league rate.
   10. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:00 PM (#2844301)
Lohse is dealing early.

TLR is ignoring Ludwick's reverse platoon split. Again.
   11. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:02 PM (#2844304)
Unorthodox TLR lineup too. I guess last night's futility prompted some adjustments.
   12. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:06 PM (#2844312)
Seeing #300 last night was awesome, made going to the game worthwhile despite the loss.
   13. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:07 PM (#2844315)
Lilly's ERA in this 9-1 stretch: 3.79.
   14. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:08 PM (#2844316)
Yikes, that was nasty.
   15. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:10 PM (#2844319)
It's 8-1(Team record of 10-2)
   16. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:10 PM (#2844320)
Seeing #300 last night was awesome, made going to the game worthwhile despite the loss.

Funny, when Pujols hit the HR I was thinking how it didn't bother me in the slightest, as long as the Cubs won. Glad to get it over with without it being a game winner.
   17. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:12 PM (#2844321)
Yes, 8-1. Thanks. Anyway, my point is that he's turned it around, without being really outstanding.
   18. Meatwad Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:13 PM (#2844323)
he didnt look good that inning nor did he look bad, a taller second baseman eliminates one of the base runners
   19. Giantandre Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:14 PM (#2844324)
#16

EXACTLY my thought last night

Stuck with a bunch of Angel fans who were rooting for Glaus but not Edmunds too....Thought that was funny
   20. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:14 PM (#2844325)
A lot more boos mixed in there today.
   21. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:16 PM (#2844329)
Ludwick ties a record with 3 putouts in the inning.
   22. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:20 PM (#2844335)
Kennedy hits a lefty?!?! Unexpected.
   23. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:22 PM (#2844338)
That's 2 unexpected lefties with hits off Lilly.
   24. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:24 PM (#2844342)
What the #### was that Derrek?
   25. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:24 PM (#2844343)
Now THAT'S a lucky SB.
   26. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:25 PM (#2844348)
How is that not ruled an error?
   27. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:26 PM (#2844353)
Despite 3 hits through 2, Lilly's pitch count is a low 27.
   28. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:29 PM (#2844361)
DeRosa? Really?
   29. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:29 PM (#2844362)
Wow, that carried a hell of a lot farther than I expected.
   30. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:29 PM (#2844365)
And of course,

I like Mark DeRosa.

He hits home runs for the Cubs.
   31. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:39 PM (#2844380)
So after hitting 300, Albert appears in 2 Abs to have stop pressing, which is excellent news.
   32. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2844396)
DeRosa? Really?

DeRosa's got 11 homers. Not like it was Theriot or somebody.
   33. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:55 PM (#2844410)
OK, your drop on the pick off is forgiven.
   34. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 04:56 PM (#2844411)
Nice play by Lee.

Cards' bats are just dead in this series, and really ever since Glaus hit that walk-off against the Mets - three games now.
   35. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:00 PM (#2844419)
DeRosa! Really.
   36. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:01 PM (#2844421)
Ankiel is no Edmonds.
   37. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:04 PM (#2844424)
Edmonds wouldn't have got to that with how shallow he plays. Probably woulda held him to the double though rather than play it like Soriano off the wall.
   38. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:05 PM (#2844426)
Lilly had been looking a lot better at the plate earlier this year too.
   39. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:08 PM (#2844429)
The Riot? Really?
   40. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:08 PM (#2844430)
Good work by Teh Riots.
   41. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:09 PM (#2844433)
Standard Theriot.
   42. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:12 PM (#2844437)
Got out of that with minimal damage, but the way the offense is going this may as well be a 20 run lead.
   43. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:27 PM (#2844452)
I thought that was gone, but I was watching 1/4 of the screen thanks to the morons at FOX.
   44. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:27 PM (#2844453)
This Edmonds thing is crazy stupid. AND a total media invention. Give it up, please.
   45. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:34 PM (#2844468)
What the ####, off a lefty?
   46. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:34 PM (#2844469)
Rick Ankiel is the Natural.

Ok, need another run. That's the first leadoff hitter this series that has made it on base.
   47. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2844474)
Damn, thought that was gone. Will take it, though.
   48. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2844476)
Nice pose Albert.

And nice route DeRosa, that was Mackowiak-esque.
   49. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2844477)
Thought Pujols got that. I don't much care for this camera angle.
   50. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:39 PM (#2844481)
Big K.
   51. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:39 PM (#2844484)
This is some bizarre ineptitude by Glaus.
   52. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2844485)
Oh, WTF.
   53. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2844486)
Ted Lilly might be the worst left hander I've ever seen at holding on runners.
   54. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2844487)
HA. That's pretty funny.
   55. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2844489)
That's all on you Lilly.
   56. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:41 PM (#2844490)
Nice work, Ludwick. He's been ice cold, too.

Ok, let's get one more here, at least.
   57. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:41 PM (#2844492)
And no, you don't bring the infield in up by 1 in the 6th inning Lou.
   58. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:41 PM (#2844493)
Lilly's move to first is comically awful. Not that that came into play here.

Well, time to settle down here.
   59. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2844496)
WOW - an extremely rare infield hit for Molina. EXTREMELY rare.
   60. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2844497)
############, a ####### molina has 2 infield hits this series. THESE GUYS SUCK! WHY DOES NOBODY ELSE REALIZE THIS?
   61. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2844498)
That's really galling.
   62. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:45 PM (#2844500)
Where the hell was that pitch?
   63. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2844501)
Where the hell was that pitch?

That's the worst umpiring since Enrico Pallazo!!!
   64. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:47 PM (#2844503)
Nice. Now time for some damn offense.
   65. Meatwad Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:47 PM (#2844504)
im sure glad that innings over
   66. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:47 PM (#2844505)
THESE GUYS SUCK! WHY DOES NOBODY ELSE REALIZE THIS?

While I agree the Cards suck, I feel obligated to point out that they have the 2d best record in the NL.

Kennedy, specifically, sucks.
   67. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:47 PM (#2844506)
"O'er the home, of the land..."
   68. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:53 PM (#2844518)
I'm relatively sure nobody watching this game gives a #### about Yankee stadium moments.
   69. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:54 PM (#2844521)
Karros fellating W. Vomit.

I've about had my fill of Kosuke K-ing and grounding out this trip.
   70. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2844522)
Great outing by Lohse, after a good one by Looper yesterday. The pitching in the Mets series was so bad, I was starting to worry. More.

Need more runs.
   71. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2844524)
You know, that Lou Piniella Aquafina commercial is what, 1.5 years old at this point? And yet it still hasn't gotten old for me. I smile every time. Lou does a really good job delivering his lines whilst looking utterly apoplectic.
   72. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2844527)
That's the worst umpiring since Enrico Pallazo!!!
Props for the Naked Gun reference.
   73. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2844529)
Brian Barton doesn't look like a baseball player to me. I can't put my finger on why.
   74. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:00 PM (#2844536)
Perhaps because he's an aerospace engineer masquerading as a baseball player?
   75. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:01 PM (#2844538)
In the noble tradition of Doug Glanville. (Don't know if Glanville was aerospace, actually, but he's an engineer.)
   76. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:02 PM (#2844539)
Barton is the subject of no little debate in the Cardinals' Holy See. No one have shown they deserve his job yet, though, so he stays.

Barton was the consensus top Rule 5 guy, I would hardly say he's "masquerading."
   77. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:02 PM (#2844541)
OK, Jeannie Zelasko's still hideous. Good to be reminded of this on occasion.
   78. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2844542)
Neal Cotts, wow.
   79. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2844543)
Oddly, I would put both Brian and Daric Barton on my Reggie Cleveland All Star Team.
   80. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:06 PM (#2844552)
I did not know that LaRussa was a Cub. Bernie fat guy insists Busch boo him from now on.
   81. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2844554)
I'll state the obvious. Aramis is due.
   82. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2844557)
Welcome back Aramis!!
   83. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2844559)
Well, that sucks. Franklin is never the answer.
   84. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2844560)
Heh. I rule.
   85. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:09 PM (#2844561)
Care to do the honors retro?
   86. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:09 PM (#2844564)
Nah, I'll defer to my noble colleague from the south side.
   87. Meatwad Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:10 PM (#2844566)
i like aramis ramirez he hits home runs for the cubs
   88. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:11 PM (#2844568)
Yeah, the military man should get it considering the weekend.
   89. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:11 PM (#2844571)
Meatwad, however much you might wish it were so, NW Indiana is not part of the south side.
   90. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:11 PM (#2844572)
Of course, it's Marmol for the 8th, so I'm not chalking this up yet.
   91. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:12 PM (#2844573)
Ah, good point, Ryan. Mad props for PFC Wad.
   92. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:14 PM (#2844575)
Wow. Nice hustle from TOFU there.
   93. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:14 PM (#2844576)
Nice read by Edmonds, Lord knows I couldn't thanks to FOX.
   94. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:15 PM (#2844578)
He double clutched and still got him???

TOFU you slow ####.
   95. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:15 PM (#2844579)
YES, oh the irony of gunning Edmonds down at the plate.
   96. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:15 PM (#2844580)
How the hell did that happen? Ludwick couldn't even get the ball out of his glove.
   97. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:16 PM (#2844582)
Haha, why are they intentionally walking Fontenot here??
   98. Guts Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:16 PM (#2844584)
The IBB to Fontenout? I guess I see the logic, but it just sounds wrong.
   99. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:17 PM (#2844585)
I guess they don't want Cotts to be able to stay in and face Ankiel, but that's all he was gonna face, seems like an overthink by TLR.
   100. retro-shiite Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:18 PM (#2844590)
Well, that's a waste. A cushion would've been nice.
