I'm rather proud that Portia Stanke thinks I'm an idiot.
   2. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 01:00 PM (#2845451)
Wellemeyer's come back to earth a bit, so I don't expect him to replicate his outing against the Cubs from earlier this season. That said, the Cubs will need all the runs they can get because you never know what Marshall's going to give you.
   3. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 01:17 PM (#2845469)
Have we talked yet about how dumb it is to move Gallagher to the pen?
   4. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 02:19 PM (#2845532)
Why'd they move Gallagher, anyway?
   5. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:09 PM (#2845626)
When Z came back somebody had to go and Lou wants 2 lefties and to not have to listen to Jason Marquis #####.

So I just stared at a blank TBS screen for 15 minutes before realizing it's on Comcast.
   7. Portia Stanke Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:20 PM (#2845654)
Ryan: it wasn't an insult so much as an observation. Act like a jackass on BCB all you like, but do so on game threads here and you'll be called out.

Kosuke and TOFU getting the day off against the 2nd place team in the division? Why?
   9. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:26 PM (#2845665)
If Marshall can keep throwing curves like that, he'll have a good game today. Unfortunately, I can't remember the last time Marshall maintained command of his curve through an entire start.
   10. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:32 PM (#2845681)
Kosuke and TOFU getting the day off against the 2nd place team in the division? Why?

Yeah, and against a RHP. No left-handed hitters except Fontenot and Marshall in the lineup.
   11. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:33 PM (#2845683)
I wonder if Ankiel knew where that ball was.
   12. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:35 PM (#2845689)
The infield was in on that? It's tied in the 2nd inning!
   13. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:35 PM (#2845691)
All right, I shell out for the damn MLB.com TV thing, and it tells me I'm blacked out from watching this game. Is that gonna be true of all Cubs games? What a crock of horseshit.
   14. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:36 PM (#2845694)
Wouldn't have hurt your thumb if you plowed the catcher Jim.
   15. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:37 PM (#2845699)
Who the hell's Portia Stanke?
   16. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:37 PM (#2845701)
Yeah, you're in the city area retro, so they're all blacked out.
   17. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:37 PM (#2845703)
Holy ####, fix the audio.
   18. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:38 PM (#2845707)
All right, I shell out for the damn MLB.com TV thing, and it tells me I'm blacked out from watching this game. Is that gonna be true of all Cubs games? What a crock of horseshit.

They'll probably refund your money if you tell them you didn't know.

Alternatively, I think there are ways to mask your IP address to get around the blackouts. Inquire in the Lounge.
   19. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:41 PM (#2845715)
Hm. Yeah, I'll see about that, AR--thanks. My bro-in-law's a computer nerd--perhaps he'll have an idea. At least I get the audio.

What's the point of the blackout? They assume since I'm in Chicago, I must be able to go to St Louis whenever I want?
   20. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:45 PM (#2845727)
I think the assumption is that you should watch the game on your local broadcast provider.

There is no sensible reason that the computer broadcasts don't count, since they could (and often do) give you the same ads you'd see in the broadcast. But there are complex mumbo-jumbo reasons that preclude it.
   21. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:47 PM (#2845731)
I think the assumption is that you should watch the game on your local broadcast provider.

Yeah, #### that. I'm not subscribing to cable. And presumably, if I wanted to pay through the nose, I could get any game I wanted on TV, there's no logical reason they shouldn't black out those games on the web either.
   22. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:47 PM (#2845733)
Wait I'm confused retro, where are you that you're not getting the game. It's being broadcast on CSN in the Chicago area.
   23. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:49 PM (#2845740)
Ah, wasn't aware you were cable-less.
   24. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:51 PM (#2845742)
I don't get any broadcast or cable tv either, but fortunately for me my local team is the Pirates, who I want to watch only when they're playing the Cubs. And when the Cubs are playing them, I listen on Gameday Audio.

I'm pretty sure that no one, including the broadcasters and MLB, is happy with the nonsensical blackout rules. However, changing them isn't easy.
   25. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:51 PM (#2845747)
I mean, part of my reasoning in getting the web package is to eliminate any conceivable justification for getting cable.
   26. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:55 PM (#2845756)
SYTH would have fit in well on the 2004-06 teams.
   27. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:55 PM (#2845757)
Yeah, sports are pretty much the only reason I have cable. I need it for college football and college basketball as well.
   28. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:56 PM (#2845759)
Yeah, mlb.tv only makes sense for people like me, or people who want access to all out-of-market games.
   29. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2845763)
OK--isn't there an option on this thing where I can get 2 games at once? I want to listen to the Cubs and watch the Brewers/Pirates.
   30. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2845764)
Lee is just not getting good swings.
   31. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:59 PM (#2845766)
OK--isn't there an option on this thing where I can get 2 games at once? I want to listen to the Cubs and watch the Brewers/Pirates.

There's the mosaic thing, but I don't think you can do Gameday Audio and mlb.tv at the same time.
   32. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 03:59 PM (#2845768)
I actually don't mind paying for the out-of-market stuff, but it pisses me off not to be able to get Cubs games. Suppose this means I can't watch weekday games from my office PC either.
   33. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:00 PM (#2845772)

There's the mosaic thing, but I don't think you can do Gameday Audio and mlb.tv at the same time.

Well, that's a kick in the teeth. I'm not even asking to be able to watch both at once. #### these people.
   34. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:01 PM (#2845775)
I'll bet that RBI hit looked pretty cool.
   35. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:01 PM (#2845776)
Great to see Ramirez hitting again.
   36. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:02 PM (#2845778)
OK--the GameDay feed is ahead of the audio feed.
   37. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:02 PM (#2845780)
Suppose this means I can't watch weekday games from my office PC either.

Yep, it's all based on IP addresses.
   38. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:06 PM (#2845795)
OK--the GameDay feed is ahead of the audio feed.

This is normal, and both should be behind the live broadcast. Sometimes by a good amount of time. It makes any kind of game chat impossible while watching the game, because people tell you what's going to happen.
   39. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:07 PM (#2845798)
I'm guessing that the combined ages of the Cardinals broadcasters is 160.
   40. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:09 PM (#2845804)
#### you, you prettyboy juicer.
   41. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:10 PM (#2845807)
#### you, you prettyboy juicer.

Go back to BCB.
   42. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:12 PM (#2845811)
Pujols had that curveball timed.
   43. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:14 PM (#2845814)
Go back to BCB.

And #### you, Portia Stanke, whoever you are.
   44. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:17 PM (#2845822)
This mlb thing's got me grumpy. Just turned down a BBQ invite. Not feeling very sociable.
   45. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:18 PM (#2845826)
At least idiot Cardinal fans have something to fall back on. We idiots in Chicago? Well, we've got to live with our stupidity AND the agony of not living in that fabulous armpit Arched Armpit.
   46. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:28 PM (#2845841)
I sure don't miss those weak groundouts on first pitches from Izturis.
   47. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:30 PM (#2845846)
Cesar Izturis is not a very good baseball player.
   48. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:31 PM (#2845849)
Tough break there. Lee finally scalds the ball and he's only got a single to show for it. Nothing Reed could do, though.
   49. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:32 PM (#2845850)
Now that was a long-ass single.
   50. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:32 PM (#2845852)
That was like 6 inches away from a HR.
   51. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:34 PM (#2845854)
That's about as bad a run-scoring outcome as you can have given the circumstances.
   52. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:35 PM (#2845856)
####.
   53. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:35 PM (#2845857)
I don't want to shun the 3-0 lead, either. It's just when you have a chance to effectively shut the door on the opposition, you'd like to see it happen.
   54. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:37 PM (#2845861)
Particularly after yesterday, I want to see the boot on the Cardinals' throat, and I want to see it pressed down hard.
   55. Andere Richtingen Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:37 PM (#2845862)
Especially when you have Sean Marshall on the mound, a guy who can give up three runs in the time it takes me to tie my shoes.
   56. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:37 PM (#2845863)
Not just that, but you figure the Cards are going to catch up with Marshall sooner than later.
   57. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:39 PM (#2845867)
You hope Murton's a part of any package Hendry puts together this month.
   58. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:40 PM (#2845870)
Mark Mulder back to starting already?
   59. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2845873)
What sort of package you think it'd take to get Burnett or Harden? I know the Jays are looking for a shortstop.
   60. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2845875)
This would be huge to keep that run at third.
   61. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:43 PM (#2845876)
Attaboy, Sean. Finish it off.
   62. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:44 PM (#2845880)
Take that, Juice.
   63. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:44 PM (#2845882)
I'm awful at evaluating these sorts of things, but I'm not sure it would take a whole lot to get Burnett. Cedeno, a pitcher, and probably a third player. I think the Jays are more concerned with getting AJ out of Toronto.
   64. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:45 PM (#2845883)
I'd like to take this moment to say that for as much crap as he takes in these parts, Marshall's pitched very well his last 2 times out.
   65. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 04:49 PM (#2845887)
I suspect Cedeno by himself would get Burnett, and I'm not even sure I'd want to give up that much to get him. He is the Cub player who best suits Toronto's needs at the moment.
   66. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:01 PM (#2845896)
My filthy whoredom appears to have killed the chatter.
   67. Sweet Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:10 PM (#2845909)
Spahn/retro/whatever -- Sorry for not chiming in earlier, but if you have two different browsers (e.g. IE and Firefox), you can get mlb.tv and GameDay Audio at the same time.
   68. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:15 PM (#2845916)
I'm with retro, I think Cedeno + worthless filler will get you Burnett.
   69. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2845918)
And I'm a huge Cedeno fan, but I'd do that trade in a heartbeat. I really think Burnett would flourish here.

Wow Cotts has 19Ks in 13 innings.
   70. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:21 PM (#2845926)
Sweet--thanks. If I weren't an idiot, that would've occurred to me.
   71. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2845929)
Cotts boosts it to a 13.5 K/9.
   72. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:24 PM (#2845932)
Cotts could be important, with Eyre out. He's done a nice job.

As if I needed another reason to be pissed not to be getting the TV feed.
   77. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2845940)
Marquis not there today? Why was Ward running for himself? And why did they send him?
   78. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:33 PM (#2845942)
And when's somebody gonna plow over Molina rather than letting him plop his fat ass in front of the plate?
   79. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:34 PM (#2845945)
Ward challenging Ankiel's not a very good idea.
   80. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2845946)
And when's somebody gonna plow over Molina rather than letting him plop his fat ass in front of the plate?

Well, Bruntlett did a couple weeks ago. Gave him a concussion, but no DL trip.
   81. Giantandre Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:36 PM (#2845948)
#78

And of all people Ward should be the one to do it
   82. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:37 PM (#2845951)
Yeah, I'd think that'd be a chance to put Ward's bulk to good use.
   83. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:38 PM (#2845952)
Ward is the last position player aside from Geo I would've let run on Ankiel. But the Cards' defensive lapse made up for it, so it's moot.
   84. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:38 PM (#2845953)
Gift runs are always nice.
   85. Giantandre Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2845957)
How do you think Ankiel's arm compares vs. people like Winfield and Dave Parker ???
   86. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2845962)
Nice quick inning for Marmol.
   87. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2845964)
85--Didn't see a lot of those 2, but Ankiel's probably got the best arm on a CF I've seen this year.
   88. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2845965)
Could we please use Wuertz for the 9th? I feel bad for the guy.
   89. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:50 PM (#2845970)
I think he has the best arm on any CF I've ever seen. I am only 24 though, and it's not like Jerome Walton and Doug Dascenzo had cannons.
   90. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:53 PM (#2845974)
Not using Wuertz makes moving Gallagher to the pen seem even stranger.
   91. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 05:59 PM (#2845977)
What annoyed me most about the Gallagher move was that it'll probably wind up hurting his trade value. Then again, if we're not getting Sabathia and Harden is unavailable, I wouldn't give him up in any trade.
   92. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 06:02 PM (#2845980)
Nice series.
   93. SteveM. Posted: July 06, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2845982)
Very nice win. Would have been nicer if my daughter hadn't been using the computer all game.
   94. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2845983)
Good series win. Sweep would've been nice, but I'll take a 3.5 game lead heading home before the break.
   95. retro-shiite Posted: July 06, 2008 at 06:04 PM (#2845986)
I don't want to trade Gallagher. I may be a minority of one, but I think he's got a chance to be really good.
   96. SteveM. Posted: July 06, 2008 at 06:12 PM (#2845998)
I think the thinking with Gallagher is that he can be another power arm in the bullpen, like Marmol was until his recent troubles. I don't think the Cubs are showcasing him for a trade, I believe that the Cubs are trying to maximize their assets.
   97. SouthSideRyan(roots for dreck) Posted: July 06, 2008 at 06:18 PM (#2846003)
I like Sean, but if he was able to be the centerpiece to bring back Sabathia or Harden, I'm trading him. As I said, neither of those appear to be happening, so I'd rather dump Marquis on some poor sap and keep him in the rotation.

Sean's dad posts on NSBB, and has implied/outright said that Sean isn't comfortable coming out of the pen.
