Davis is Lilly's #2 BBref Comp
Lilly is Davis' #3 BBref Comp
Both are 32 years old.
Both were born in California.
Davis' secretary was named Lincoln.
Lilly's secretary was named Kennedy.

Have we seen any other ultra-similar pitcher matchups this year?

I'm thinking Lilly throws a little harder than Davis. And with a much less irritating motion.

It doesn't seem like the Cubs ever hit Davis, so I'm not terribly optimistic. I have no idea what the hell's gotten into (or more accurately, gone out of) this offense.

We can only cheat at home?

Cheating apparently involves taking a lot of pitches.

The Cubs took a lot of pitches and hit into some bad luck last night. They've never been all that good against Davis from what I recall. They desperately need a split in this series, though.

I've got a friend's birthday festivities tonight to at least ensure I won't break my hiatus from watching this team on Day One of said hiatus.
   9. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: July 23, 2008 at 05:07 PM (#2869802)
Sorry, Walks, but there will be no split in this series.

That's not very optimistic at all, now is it?
   11. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 23, 2008 at 06:49 PM (#2869983)
Isn't this a four-game set? I'm too lazy to look it up.
   12. NTNgod Posted: July 23, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2870017)
The Marlins series is four games.

Perhaps this will be the weekend Piniella gets his first win against a Florida team as Cub manager.

That's not very optimistic at all, now is it?

True optimists do not let details like mathematical impossibility stand in the way of blind optimism. Just ask Hillary Clinton, ca. May 2008.

Did you just compare me to Hillary, or worse say I fall short of her optimism, Gramps?
   16. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: July 23, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2870440)
At least Soriano is back. That'll fix everything.

Optimism that, retro.

I'm just getting here after a dinner party. I see Lee has homered. At least I'm not going to spend a good portion of the game wondering whether they're going to be shut out.
   21. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 23, 2008 at 10:02 PM (#2870554)
And at the very very least we no longer have to wonder whether CC Sabathia will throw a no hitter while we lose the division lead.

I'm curious, is R Johnson/J Edmonds a strict CF platoon or a part-time, sorta platoon? I could check, but I am lazy, thanks.
   23. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: July 23, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2870577)
It's not a stable situation. It may turn out to be a strict platoon, but who knows.

What's with Ramirez this year?

I need to figure out when exactly my buddy from New Jersey's coming into town. Think it's the same week as the August meetup. Have we settled on a date yet?

Ramirez has been mercurial this year, that's for damn sure.

I suppose I shouldn't be that stressed about the state of things. I don't imagine the entire heart of the Cub order going 0 for a road trip is likely to continue.

Ted Lilly is lucky that Chris Young didn't get a little more loft on that.

What does the Arizona lineup have to do with the Cubs scoring three runs in 22 innings?

Like I said--for them to lose to (in other words, fail to outscore) the Arizona lineup is a feckin' disgrace. Clear?
   48. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:01 PM (#2870646)
The NL is ####, isn’t it? CC Sabathia can’t just go around and throw three complete games in a row. He can’t. To make matters worse today’s game is a shutout. I like that the Cubs acquired Harden, but right now I’d rather have Texeira. Position be damned.

Like I said--for them to lose to (in other words, fail to outscore) the Arizona lineup is a feckin' disgrace. Clear?

Now that CoJack is entrenched in left field, the only glaring hole in the lineup is Romero/Burke in right field and Chris Young. Beyond that it's a bunch of guys that are either above average (Jackson, Tracy, Hudson, Reynolds) are near average (Snyder and Drew).

It's not great, but it's pretty damned close to average.

You hate it when he goes overboard praising the heads up base running of Ted Lilly?

Davis wasn't paying any attention to him and he took third without a throw.

I love hearing Brennaman sound all downcast about Lilly's hit.
   73. SteveM. Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:15 PM (#2870681)
Davis fell asleep on the mound. Hell, with his delivery, I've felt like taking a nap when he is on the mound.

   77. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2870686)
retro, it's not Brennaman any more. It's Darren Sutton.
   78. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2870687)
Brennaman does Cincy games now, I believe that's Sutton you're listening to retro.

Funny that Lilly took 3rd on Davis, cause that happens to Lilly pretty much every game.
   79. retro-shiite Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM (#2870688)
Really? He sounds exactly like Brennaman.

SO much for that, #############.
   81. NTNgod Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2870691)
Brennaman went to Cincy before last year, Sutton went from Milwaukee to Arizona
   82. retro-shiite Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2870693)
I was going to comment after Drew's steal of third that Lilly's as bad at holding runners as any lefty I've ever seen.
   83. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:18 PM (#2870694)
Conor Jackson looks like he hurt his quad on that.
   84. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2870695)
He better not be hurt. We can't lose our two best position players this series.
   85. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2870696)
Hmmm maybe an ankle not a quad
   86. retro-shiite Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2870697)
Oh, ####'s sake. Give it right back.
   87. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM (#2870698)
It's funny though how Sutton and Thommy Boy are pretty much indistinguishable.

"With a (completely unnecessary) slide! It's a triple!"

Awful.

Good hitting by Jackson though. I think he's going to be great.
   88. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:22 PM (#2870701)
Really? He sounds exactly like Brennaman.

But nobody can match Brennaman's self-righteousness. Sutton can also be pretty clever when he's not being bogged down by Grace's buffoonishness.
   89. NTNgod Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:22 PM (#2870702)
Santo just now was pretty funny.

Provis (? - the mid-inning guy, in any case) was talking about the Brewers' win, and Santo sort of cut him off and said "Let's not talk about that now. I'm not in a very good mood".
   90. NTNgod Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:23 PM (#2870705)

Sutton was pretty good for the few years he was in Milwaukee.

Nice play by Aramis! Also good play by Jackson to stay in rundown long enough to get Young to second.

Well, maybe Morgan, but Brennaman's definitely got him beat in terms of UNJUSTIFIABLE self-righteousness.
   93. Dan Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:24 PM (#2870708)
I think Sutton is pretty good, but not so great when working with Grace.

What kind of % do you need to reach break even on stealing 3rd with 2 outs? 95%?

Granted it's Ted Lilly and you could probably steal 3rd base 95% of the time against him, but still.
   100. retro-shiite Posted: July 23, 2008 at 11:26 PM (#2870716)
And good job of description by SteveM to let me know what the hell happened. Was wondering how Young ended up at second.
