I think I'm going to the movies at 4 or 5, so the Cubs should stack up runs early and let me go to the theater without any worries.

Yost benches Hart for Kapler and moves Braun to 5th with Hardy 3rd.

Yay Ned!!

i think to complete the sweep and the domiance of this series, hardner needs to k 15 and no hit them and with todays line up it could very well happen
   4. Stevens Posted: July 31, 2008 at 01:03 PM (#2884182)
Okay Cubs, let's keep it going.

Aramis has burned Bush a little in 24 PAs. Lee, not so much in 19. Soriano has been okay in 22. Only Ray Ray and Cameron have ever seen Harden.

Silly a stat as it is, I would love to see Harden get his first Cubs win today just so people stop talking about the lack thereof.

Yanks, Red Sox eyeing Eyre

Thursday, July 31, 2008 | Print Entry

Posted by Jayson Stark

That never-ending Yankees-Red Sox intrigue has found its way to Scott Eyre. Both clubs are in on the Cubs left-hander, who is expected to be moved for a very modest return. But both teams also have him as a back burner option as they search for more impactful bullpen help.
   10. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 31, 2008 at 01:41 PM (#2884274)
Does this mean he sits in someone else's bullpen for 20-odd games without being used?

I'm sorry, I should have been a little clearer. What time is it over there now? Or, if someone wants to figure out what time the game starts in JST (Japan Standard Time), that'd be cool, too. I assume BBTF's timestamp is on Eastern time?

How the #### does anybody get doubled off first on a FO7?

I'm done with Rickie. I wish him well, but on another team. This is just ridiculous.
   26. Stevens Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:23 PM (#2884398)
Must have been a heck of a throw from Soriano.
   27. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:23 PM (#2884400)
Harveys is right when he complains about Brewers on the bases. They are rubbish.
   28. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:24 PM (#2884405)
It was a good throw, but mostly it was really bad baserunning. Fun fact: The throw got away from Lee so both Lee and Weeks had to dive into first from opposite sides.
   29. isaacc7 Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:25 PM (#2884406)
Soriano threw high, DLee knocked it down, found the ball, and then dived to first just in time for the out... It was a lot more exciting than it should have been...
   30. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:25 PM (#2884407)
BTW: The ONLY explanation is that Weeks lost track of the number of outs. Which seems impossible in the first inning, but here it is.
   31. CFiJ Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:26 PM (#2884408)
Must have been a heck of a throw from Soriano.

I'm guessing bad route followed by great throw. The former made Weeks think he had a chance, and the latter nailed him when Alfonso pulled off a miracle catch.
   32. CFiJ Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:26 PM (#2884409)
Or, what Carl and isaacc7 said.
   33. CFiJ Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:27 PM (#2884417)
BTW: The ONLY explanation is that Weeks lost track of the number of outs. Which seems impossible in the first inning, but here it is.

He thought Craig Counsell was batting clean-up???

He thought Craig Counsell was batting clean-up???

I’m as flabbergasted as you are. Weeks is stupid or really really bad at baseball.
   36. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:31 PM (#2884428)
Worst first two innings of the series? Of course that happens against Dave Bush.
   37. Stevens Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:32 PM (#2884434)
Did Ryan Braun really just try to bunt his way on?
   38. Meatwad Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:33 PM (#2884438)
why is braun bunting (at least according to sportsline
   39. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2884453)
Ramirez was playing back, so why not. It didn’t work, but kept the infield honest.
   40. Weeks T. Olive Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:40 PM (#2884465)
I think Dave Bush looks like a bearded Kirk Cameron in his Yahoo photo.

welcome to the NL Harden...
   48. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2884490)
If Manny had done what Rich Harden just did, he would've been executed on the spot.

What I want to know is why the infield fly rule wasn't in effect.
   49. Dan Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2884491)
Even if Harden is running there, isn't the smart move to let it drop and get Soto? I'd rather make Harden run the bases than Soto, I think.
   50. isaacc7 Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:46 PM (#2884497)
Don't you have to have runners at first and second? Or at least 2 baserunners or something....
   51. isaacc7 Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:46 PM (#2884501)
... for the infield fly rule that is.
   52. Stevens Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:48 PM (#2884507)
Crew pitchers smacking it around.
   53. isaacc7 Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:48 PM (#2884510)
Alright, there has to be a force play at third with less than two out for the infield fly rule to take effect.
   54. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:48 PM (#2884512)
I believe you’re correct sir. … about the infield fly rule, that is.
   55. Weeks T. Olive Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:51 PM (#2884522)
I'm amused by the Yahoo description of that Harden play (emphasis mine):

"R. Harden unknown into double play third to shortstop to second, G. Soto out at second"
   56. isaacc7 Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:51 PM (#2884524)
Hmm, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infield_fly_rule the infield fly rule cannot be invoked on a bunt. That seems odd to me.
   57. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:53 PM (#2884530)
Wow, these little technicalities surrounding the infield fly rule remind me of the ins and outs of contract law or something.
   58. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:55 PM (#2884540)
I wonder how many friendships have been ruined forever over the infield fly rule in beer league softball.
   59. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:57 PM (#2884546)
Harden’s a cyborg, right? As a Cub: 34 strikeouts in 20.1 innings. He doesn’t miss time to injuries, but to faulty hydraulics and glitches in the software.
   60. Cabbage Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:58 PM (#2884548)
In college, I asked a girl to marry me when I found out she knew the infield fly rule. Turns out, that is a pretty good pickup line.
   61. Cabbage Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:59 PM (#2884550)
For the record, I am marrying an altogether different girl next weekend.
   62. Giantandre Posted: July 31, 2008 at 02:59 PM (#2884551)
When I used to coach Pony league (13 & 14 YO's) The infield fly and batting out of order came up at least 5 times a season and always incorrectly called and giant pow wow's would break out about how to apply the rule
   63. Giantandre Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:00 PM (#2884555)
Now if we could just get D Lee back on track
   64. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2884563)
Cabbage, it sounds like a good pickup line. Doesn’t work so well on European girls, I’d imagine. Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials, but I have to ask: Does the bride to be know the rule?
   65. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2884564)
Giantandre: The important thing is to have him bat with the bases empty. Then his double-play grounders won’t hurt so much.
   66. Giantandre Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2884565)
That looked intentional ----

   78. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:05 PM (#2884588)
Holy Crap! EDMONDS you beautiful beautiful person.
   79. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:05 PM (#2884591)
Jesus Christ, Jim Edmonds?

I'm rooting for the Brewers, really, but I have to say I'm enjoying Edmonds' career-rescuing revival on the most unlikely team imaginable. I almost wish this game was at Wrigley so he could come out for the curtain-call, which would be even sweeter coming from Cubs fans.
   80. CFiJ Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2884593)
Hard to believe Edmonds is only hitting .242. He must have really, really sucked for the Pads.
   81. retro-shiite Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2884594)
Incidentally, I typed #67 after TOFU's slam (seeing the slam as a F.U. to that POS ump Eddings), though it would've fit just before it.
   82. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2884596)
If that was an intentional HBP then it was one of the dumbest ever. Not because of the slam, but because hitting someone when the count is 0-2 is just retarded.
   83. Weeks T. Olive Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2884597)
What did Eddings do?
   84. retro-shiite Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:07 PM (#2884598)
I almost wish this game was at Wrigley so he could come out for the curtain-call, which would be even sweeter coming from Cubs fans.

I think I was finally won over by his 2-homer inning against the White Sox. This might be even better.
   85. Carl Spongberg Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:07 PM (#2884599)
Weeks, as long as they don’t Gaetti him next season.
   86. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:07 PM (#2884600)
Boy were we all wrong about the Edmonds signing. What a steal it's turned out to be. And finally some run support for Harden.
   87. retro-shiite Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:08 PM (#2884603)
What did Eddings do?

Made an epically awful strike call on the previous pitch. The ball curved out of the strike zone about a foot before it got to the plate, and Edmonds made about a 25% swing, which apparently was enough for a swinging strike call.
   88. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:08 PM (#2884604)
Eddings said Edmonds didn't hold up on a swing that he clearly held up on. I can't recall hearing Bob that speechless about an umpire's call. All a moot point one pitch later, however.
   89. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:10 PM (#2884608)
Bob Brenly as the ball sails out of the park: "NO CHECK SWING ON THAT ONE, EH?"

It was pretty funny.
   90. retro-shiite Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:10 PM (#2884610)
Brenly's reaction was great. About 30 seconds after the strike call, "Ah, GEEZ!"
   91. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:10 PM (#2884611)
Jesus Christ, Jim Edmonds?

Close.
   92. retro-shiite Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:10 PM (#2884612)
And, what Esoteric said.
   93. Weeks T. Olive Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:11 PM (#2884613)
Well, I would expect that from Doug Eddings.
   94. Cabbage Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:11 PM (#2884615)
Boy were we all wrong about the Edmonds signing. What a steal it's turned out to be. And finally some run support for Harden.

Agreed. I remember thinking that there was always the possibility of a Will-Clark-to-STL-like resurrection, but I hated Edmonds, and stuff like that doesn't happen to the Cubs. who knew.
   95. Srul Itza Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:14 PM (#2884622)
He must have really, really sucked for the Pads.

Is .178/.265/.233/.498 sucky enough for you?

Where the heck DID this come from?
   96. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:14 PM (#2884623)
I remember being particularly against this deal, as the Cubs' offense was rolling and I thought the move would hurt their defense, since it pushed Pie back to the minors. I still hope Pie can put it together next season, but truth be told, I go many days at a time without even thinking of poor Felix.
   97. Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:14 PM (#2884624)
I think this Edmonds kid might work out. Where'd he come from, anyway?
   98. Weeks T. Olive Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:15 PM (#2884627)
stuff like that doesn't happen to the Cubs.

This was the kicker for me. The Cubs seem to very, very rarely "catch lightning in a bottle", at least in comparison to other teams, and when they do, it doesn't matter in the long run (Bellhorn in '02) or actively hurts the team in the future (Neifi in '04).

Deep down I was hoping that Edmonds would do something like this and redeem himself from an eternity of damnation, but I kept thinking that no, these things never work out for the Cubs. This year is different, I guess.
   99. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 31, 2008 at 03:15 PM (#2884629)
The Crew doesn't even look like they belong on the same field. AT least on Monday and half of Tuesday they put up a fight. This is what I was trying to explain to Andere. The guys have put SOOOOO much emphasis on Sheets/CC when first one lost and then Bennie gave it up that clearly shook them to the core. They look lost.

Cripes........

I hear tell that he played for one of those Missouri teams. Kansas City I think, so it's okay.
