Early game today - ok, I guess I didn't really feel like working anyway.

I refuse to defend De Bad in this chatter. The last two times I did that, he got blown up. Of course, he's Unjinxable, so I guess my comments don't make a difference.

Why do I always seem to chatter in Marquis starts?

Why do I always seem to chatter in Marquis starts?

Sadomasochism?

On a happier note, the Cubs offense can and should outscore the Pirate's offense today.

Morning baseball--woohoo!

Pedal to the metal.
   4. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:40 AM (#2918533)
Sadomasochism?

Well, natch. It's the Marquis himself, after all.
   5. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:42 AM (#2918536)
In yesterday's game chatter, someone wondered if 100 RBI would be a record for a rookie catcher. I don't know if it's the record (I'm guessing so), but Piazza had 112 in '93.
   6. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:44 AM (#2918538)
Sadomasochism?

Well, it's either that or actually watch the game on TV, so this is the lesser of two evils, isn't it?

It does seem that pitches an inordinate amount of afternoon games, though, compared to the rest of the team (usually the only time I chatter).
   7. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:44 AM (#2918539)
Wasn't Piazza a rookie in '93?

Fine with me, since my tickets are to night and weekend games. Come to think about it, it HAS been a while since I've seen him in person, though I imagine I'll see him on Labor Day.
   9. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:46 AM (#2918541)

Never mind--I misread your post.
   10. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:46 AM (#2918542)
Yeah, that's what I meant, but didn't say clearly. Piazza had 112 RBI as a rookie in '93, which I'm guessing is the record (but haven't confirmed).
   11. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:48 AM (#2918546)
He wasn't a rookie, but Johnny Bench had 148 (!) RBI at age 22.
   12. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 11:49 AM (#2918548)
That total by Bench is a record for a catcher, BTW.
   13. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:31 PM (#2918601)
Lineup:

A. Soriano lf

H. Blanco c
J. Marquis p

This is weird. This game starts so early that I actually get to watch the first hour before any other engagements. One hour will probably get us into the second inning. Let’s get the sweep, all right?
   15. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:36 PM (#2918609)
retro, are you telling me Soto isn’t as good as Bench? What Dreck!
   16. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:37 PM (#2918611)
Has Soriano had any leadoff HRs this season? I can't recall any. Interesting since he had so many (and first pitch HR) last season.
   17. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:39 PM (#2918615)
That's a good start.
   18. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:41 PM (#2918618)
Looking it up, Soriano has had three first inning HR this season (May 13, 14, and 16 - during that week when he was on fire and hit like 7 HR), but all three were at home.
   19. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:42 PM (#2918619)
Bah.
   20. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:42 PM (#2918620)
Come on, Rammy.

oh happy day

Really? Is he moving on to ESPN full-time or something?
   23. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:49 PM (#2918640)
What did Soriano do out in LF?

You mean last night, Weeks? He dropped a routine fly ball. Just biffed off the end of his glove. Little League stuff.
   26. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 12:57 PM (#2918652)
No, just now in the first. Yahoo said that Wilson singled to LF and advanced to 2B on Soriano's error.
   27. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:06 PM (#2918666)
Sorry, I'm dropping the ball here. I might be the only person watching this game, but I was in the shower when that play happened.
   28. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:18 PM (#2918675)
Ok, time to get something going.
   29. Meatwad Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:20 PM (#2918678)
500 for a 3 bedroom house kind of in the country, of 594 for a 2 bedroom apartment in lafayette or go with a tiny bedroom in my friends place for 250. decisions decsions
   30. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:24 PM (#2918683)
That was TERRIBLE baserunning by Theriot. The ball went right under his legs. He had ZERO chance of getting to third.
   31. Giantandre Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:25 PM (#2918684)
Why the F -- are we playing so early in the morning ..... My 9:30am start times are saved for College FB ... This is ridiculous????? and score some F'ing runs already
   32. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:27 PM (#2918687)
For a guy with the "scrappy gamer" tag, Theriot really is a terrible baserunner, isn't he?
   33. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:28 PM (#2918689)
Will the house or apartment just be for you, meat, or will you be looking for roommates.

I'm guessing a house is probably more upkeep work than you'd be looking for by yourself.
   34. VoodooR Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:29 PM (#2918691)
It's amazing he still has the green light. He's cost the team ten runs on the bases this season. We could be 33 games over .500, damn it!
   35. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:31 PM (#2918693)
Yeah, that’s not going to get it done. De Sad’s implosion is surely imminent and at that rate we’re not going to see much of the Pirate’s bullpen. Get something done, dammit!
   36. Giantandre Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:33 PM (#2918697)
BTW are those numbers above for rent in American Dollars???? Where the hell can I live for 250 dollars or have my own place for 600 .... What is this 1920????
   37. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:33 PM (#2918698)
What is this 1920????

In Indiana, it is and will always be 1920.

weeks i would be by myself unless i ended up with roomates. and i dont really mind fixing stuff up. the friends place is a block from where a bunch of my other friends and is right off campus, the apartment is way on the other side of town. but the country doesnt sound too bad to me can get away with lots more out there
   39. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:37 PM (#2918704)
This one's going by quickly. I guess they're trying to make up for yesterday's marathon.

Last night when I was half-listening/half-working, I was thinking the game was moving along quickly because LaRoche kept coming up. I had forgotten that there were two LaRoches. Then I realized that Ian Snail was pitching.
   41. Meatwad Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:37 PM (#2918706)
giantandre its a college town and the 250 would be splitting the rent. oh and its not cali its lafayette indiana.

looking at the country place doesnt look too tough to get to base and quicker then what i take now which could come in handy considering i may be full time there come feb. and the apartment would be a sublease (the one for 600) thats up at the end of feb...right when i could possibly go fulltime/def going to guam for 2 months
   42. Stevis Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:38 PM (#2918708)
Which LaRoche got his rug peed on?

Remember to bury the bodies at least six feet deep, otherwise dogs will find them.

Living in the country means you need a reliable car.

Now Guam sounds kick ass ... I'd move there in a minute ....
   46. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:40 PM (#2918713)
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?
   47. Meatwad Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:40 PM (#2918714)
oh well ill figure all this out soon anyways, both apartments i could move into asap its really just choosing which i want. and im thinking the cheapest option is probly the worst considering the size of the place, and that fact that its rather crappy
   48. Giantandre Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:41 PM (#2918716)
#42

That was the "other" Jeffery Lebowski
   49. Meatwad Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:41 PM (#2918717)
guam is a 2 month deployment for me, getting activated, but it wont interfear with getting a full time job there since ill be over there with a lot of the full time guys.
   50. Meatwad Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:42 PM (#2918718)
they really seem worried about derosa over there at first
   51. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:46 PM (#2918724)
Hey, a hit for Marquis! It was a terrible looking swing though.

Wow, I disapear for a martini at lunch and they are already in the 5th inning? Holy no runs Cubs offense!

I've got the lucky cap today. We'll be fine.

Okay, I'm getting on a plane. The cubs had better be leading when I land in Philly.
   56. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:50 PM (#2918730)
This is going to be another one of *those* games, huh? Leadoff man on base three times (two doubles) in the first five innings and nothing to show for it.
   57. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:56 PM (#2918737)

And they f***in' peed on it.
   58. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:56 PM (#2918738)
It seems like the Cubs have one of these games every series where they get a bunch of guys on and can't push anyone home, and the runs they do score are on solo homeruns.
   59. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 01:57 PM (#2918739)
My bro-in-law's brother met his future (and future ex) fiancee while he was assigned to Guam. He's a herpetologist for the Feds. Sounds like he had a blast.

Studying herpes doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun to me, even if you get to do it in exotic locales. I hope his ex wasn't one of his cases.
   61. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:02 PM (#2918747)
Marquis and Duke have identical lines through five. And they're only separated by three pitches. Weird. I would've expected this game to be like last night's game.
   62. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:02 PM (#2918748)
RDF, Weeks.

I made a similar comment to him once. He commented in mock amazement that he'd never, ever heard such a joke before.
   64. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:03 PM (#2918752)
Yeah, that's bizarre. Even GB-FBs: 7-5 for Marquis, 7-4 for Duke.

One of my old college roomates has an ex-father in law that spent WWII in the Pacific getting and getting rid of the clap in various locales out there.

Heh. I almost included a parenthetical wondering how many times he's gotten that one.

Anytime now you guys can throw out a 10 run inning. Waiting until the 9th really doesn't make it more of a win, guys.
   68. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:10 PM (#2918761)
Wait all you have to do to get rid of the clap is to pass it on to somebody else?
   69. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:12 PM (#2918762)
I've got a class in 15 minutes, so there's a good chance this will be over by time I'm out at 4. Get A run, Cubs.
   70. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:14 PM (#2918763)

You didn't know that? Why do you think people with the clap sleep around so much?
   71. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:15 PM (#2918764)
Alright, nice work ClutchRosa. Now bring them home, Ronny.
   72. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:16 PM (#2918766)
Note that, Moss seems to have made an odd decision on his throw to third. There was no question that Johnson would be safe there, why not hold DeRosa to first.
   73. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:16 PM (#2918767)
Ok, here we go.
   74. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:17 PM (#2918768)
Man, the suicide squeeze is such an exciting play.

I like it.

It's like freeze-tag
   77. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:18 PM (#2918772)
That was a squeeze? Man, GameDay sucks. Describes it as "grounds out softly."
   78. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:18 PM (#2918774)
Oh--Heinrich squeeze bunted.

Life's more confusing when you follow it on GameDay.
   79. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:18 PM (#2918775)
Yep, it was a squeeze. Hank actually popped it up, but it fell before Duke could get there. Great break by Clutchy, he scored standing. The ump was standing on home, so DeRo ran into him.
   80. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:19 PM (#2918777)
Nice inning. Let's hear it for smallball.
   81. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:19 PM (#2918779)
Retro,

It was a very low pitch that Henry somehow popped up in the air and it landed 12 feet up the line on the grass where neither the P or C could catch it in the air. DeRosa was charging down the line before the pitch and was safe easily as Blanco was thrown out at first.
   82. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:20 PM (#2918780)
Note that, Moss seems to have made an odd decision on his throw to third. There was no question that Johnson would be safe there, why not hold DeRosa to first.

I think it's been established in this series that Moss's baseball smarts seem to be a little subpar.
   83. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:23 PM (#2918785)
Wow, Marquis with a great inning. Take him out now, Lou. Don't let him #### this one up.
   84. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:24 PM (#2918786)
Well, his baseball braindeadness contributed to a bunch of runs last night for sure.
   85. retro-shiite Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:24 PM (#2918787)
95 pitches. Push Marquis another inning here?
   86. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:26 PM (#2918790)
I wouldn't. I'd go to the big guns in the bullpen to lock it down. Marmol-Wood if Wood's available (I doubt it) or BPJ-Marmol.
   87. Giantandre Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:26 PM (#2918791)
Problem is Marquis will be a little ##### if they take him out
   88. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:27 PM (#2918792)
Definitely retro. If he can work quick enough in the 8th, I don't mind pushing the CG. Of course I'm not watching the game, so I have no idea how he looks beyond the box score.
   89. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:28 PM (#2918794)
I wonder if the old superstition about the chairwoman of the Cubs Wives charity organization still persists.
   90. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:30 PM (#2918796)
What superstition is that, Jack?
   91. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:33 PM (#2918802)
The chairwoman's husband used to get traded every year.
   92. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:34 PM (#2918803)
Interesting - I'd never heard that.
   93. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:34 PM (#2918804)
WTF, SYTH? He throws 9 straight balls (although 1 was called a strike) and you reach for a breaking pitch on the first pitch of that AB?

And what was up with Russell and Andrews there? I'm surprised they didn't come out and talk to him. It looked like he was done. Luckily for Duke, SYTH is a moron.
   94. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:34 PM (#2918805)

#### him. Who cares?
   95. Moses Taylor should take the boat captain test Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:35 PM (#2918806)
Good move, Lou. No need pushing your luck by sending De Bad out again.
   96. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2918808)
Wood's available?
   97. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:37 PM (#2918810)
Good move, Lou. No need pushing your luck by sending De Bad out again.

Exactly. Getting 7 scoreless from Marquis is like betting on red and winning 7 times in a row. No need to get greedy.
   98. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:38 PM (#2918815)
It would be nice if Marmol doesn't #### this up, though...
   99. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 27, 2008 at 02:40 PM (#2918817)
Wood's available?

I'm surprised. 13 pitches on Monday, 25 yesterday.

McClouth 5/6 vs. Marmol.
