Cubs have the comedy line-up today - and why not?

Theriot SS
Fontenot 2B
Murton LF
Soto C
Pie CF
Cedeno 3B
Blanco 1B
Fuld RF
Hill

I'm only surprised that Daryle Ward isn't the starting pitcher.

I hate FOX..why not show the Phillies game? I know in Minnesota I'm probably in the Chicago area but who wants to watch this lineup in a game that means nothing..put the ####### Phillies on..FOX is a ####### joke.

and the joke line up is hitting the ball
   4. Neil M Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:05 PM (#2550178)
That was Murton's 3rd career HR against Harang. Pretty good.

McCarver just said during the Phils game that the Cubs clinched a playoff spot "hours" before the D-Backs won last night. He also called Kyle Lohse, Loh-see.

Cedeno can hit a ball.

Marshall ??

'Tho he deserves it, I'd guess Ohman or Hart are ahead of him.

Pie ??
Monroe

One of them will yield to Cedeno, for IF cover. I'd rather ditch Monroe, but I think it could be Pie.

I think I'd rather see Hart in there over Marshall. He's shown he can pitch pretty well out of the pen; not so sure about Marshall. A baseball should not touch Ohman's hands for the next month.

I think I agree completely with Giantandre's playoff roster in #8.

I'd rather ditch Monroe, but I think it could be Pie.

Nah, Pie's the kind of guy who has added value in postseason. If you ditch Pie, your backup centerfielder is either Monroe or Soriano. As a defensive replacement and pinch-runner, Pie could play important innings more often than not in the postseason.

Marshall ??

'Tho he deserves it, I'd guess Ohman or Hart are ahead of him.

Hart would be a pure redundancy. In the playoffs teams tend to shorten their bullpen. The Cubs bullpen already goes 5 deep in right-handers, I can't see what situation they'd use Hart, so why bother putting him on the roster?

I do think the team might see Ohman as fitting better than Marshall, but I agree that would be a mistake.

The one thing I hope to see: Soto as the starting catcher in the playoffs.

And how about that "comedy line-up" today? Go Cubs, go!

Also, it feels nice to have a regular season game like this. We've had joke lineups in there far too often under Dusty, but they almost always came with negative connotations (either idiocy or the Cubs being so far out it didn't matter what the lineup was). Today's game reminds me of the final day of the 2003 season: A late-season game with no pressure and not because the team's out of it. Watched the first couple innings of that before heading out and buying one of the throwback jerseys from '84.
   13. Neil M Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:38 PM (#2550206)
Yeah, but Ohman is supposedly a LOOGY.

NL ROY 2008 - Geovany Soto.
   14. Giantandre Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:43 PM (#2550210)
Geovany Soto - 2007 version of Francisco Rodriguez
   15. Neil M Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:43 PM (#2550213)
BTW, I'm not really calling it a 'joke' line-up. Merely the alternative select. To my mind there are two huge qualitive differences between this year's Cubs and the 2003 club. A hugely better bullpen and a much better bench. They go a long way to offsetting the difference in starting rotations, and may ultimately prove to be more important.
   16. Giantandre Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:46 PM (#2550218)
Eaton is already out of the game in Philly, boy I'm glad we clinched

Alma Mater's got a big football game so I'll see ya all tomorrow ....

Chicago Cubs 2007 Central Division Champs .... fun to type

fantastic outing by hill today
   19. Neil M Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:11 PM (#2550242)
I dunno. He's given up more walks than Harang has.
   20. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:12 PM (#2550244)
Not sure about this. I say let the pen go for it. He's not staying in the full nine, regardless (I'd hope), so why keep him in?
   21. Neil M Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:13 PM (#2550245)
65 through 5. Let him go as far as it goes.
   22. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:25 PM (#2550259)
Buck Coats?! Boo.
   23. Neil M Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:27 PM (#2550262)
The show's over. Buck ####### Coats, former Cub. Typical.
   24. Kiko Sakata Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:00 PM (#2550301)
Zambrano, Hill, and Marshall have all pushed their season ERAs below 4 in these last two games.

Geovany Soto - 2007 version of Francisco Rodriguez

Soto is hitting over .400 in 52 AB's. That is the seventh highest number of ABs for a .400 hitter since 1941. List
   26. There's a chill wind blowing in Misirlou's soul Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:07 PM (#2550311)
But curiously, only the second highest since 2006.
   27. Neil M Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:18 PM (#2550321)
Really good work all round for the Cubs. Outstanding job by Hill.
